The Wii U gamepad is a thing of wonder though. it's like they didn't even bother to test it on humans. Some long fingered ape perhaps, but not on real people! Their idea that it would be used as a second screen when playing games ignored the fact that you'd have to shift your eyes between two very distinct focal lengths. It also hurts your eyes on some games in lower light with it casting light into your peripheral vision. Not good.

Not sure, all the chips (N64, Gamecube and Wii U) were of a RISC type although they were made by third parties such as IBM. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_64_technical_specifications#Central_processing_unit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GameCube_technical_specifications https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_64_technical_specifications#Central_processing_unit It is Wii backwards compatible (I seem to remember the Wii GC compatibility was due to the actually bolting on the (now shrunk) GC hardware onto the board. I think this is the same as the Wii compatibility of the Wii U. The mods used for Wii and other emulation allow you to play games from disk image files and other 'nice' things. That should speed things up nicely.

The Wii U also launched almost extacty 12 months before the Xbox One and PS4 and given it's lack of games many gamers hung back to see what was coming from Microsoft and Sony. Also not helped by Nintendo treating third party devs very badly when it came to support and keeping all the best tips and tricks to themselves. This article makes interesting reading about where the Big Nin went wrong with this machine - https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/01/a_third_party_secret_developer_gives_an_inside_story_of_working_on_wii_u

Yes (under emulation). It's mainly the N64, MAME and possibly some SNES/Megadrive titles too, I'm looking to play.

Earlier this week I saw something on Gumtree and thought I just had to dive in with it. It's a Wii U, and I got it for pennies (complete with working gamepad, which are becoming scarce these days). The idea is, after playing around and getting very frustrated, with a Rasp Pi for retro-gaming, to mod it and load it up with emulators. So, last night I cleaned it down with some wipes (it was a bit grotty) and fired it up. I suspect it hadn't been used for quite some time as the firmware was well out of date, but once I'd completed the setup process and updated the system I suddenly rembered one fo the Wii U's main fail points. It's speed. Honestly, it takes about 20-30 seconds just to get into the settings screen! The previous owners didn't supply any games (but it did have a Super Mario Maker disc left in it) but I did have a Mario Kart 8 disc here back from when I had one previously and dove in and wow, is it annoying to use. The gamepad is painful to use (I will be getting a pro controller when I get around to it) and I can really see now why it bombed. Well, there are many reasons for it, but with slow disc access, pitiful storage and now, with some features disabled, it's a real dog! Thankfully it's Wii backwards comptible and you can also have it emulate many other systems as well. The top games can also be had for pocket money prices from CEX (where I'm taking a trip tomorrow) and the Wii ones even cheaper. I'm mainly going to use it for retro gaming as it'll be a lot easier to use the the Pi* Is anyone else here still gaming on the Wii U or has everyone very sensibly moved over to the Switch? *The Pi was a pain using RetroArch, not so much the setup and operation, but when using MAME for example, you have to manually set the screen details for each game as many are set for much older displays and with US created titles often requiring far more tweaking, it simply was a collosal pain. I'll find another project for the Pi in the spring, possibly feeding into the flight tracking systems.

[blackberry] Blackberry kills support for handsets
Dos_Box replied to Dos_Box's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
I always remember Steve Ballmer looking at the first iPhone and declaring 'Who'd buy this, it doesn't even have a keyboard!'. Many tech companies got caught out by the change in how technologies work and were far too slow to adapt. -
And the big question will be, can you actually buy any when released?

[blackberry] Blackberry kills support for handsets
Dos_Box posted a topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
As of the 4th Jan, Blackberry will be pulling the plug on support for it's handsets - https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2021/12/end-of-the-line-finally-coming-for-blackberry-devices/ Is anyone out there even using them anymore?! I may also have the great honour of posting the very final thread about Blackberry! -
Happy new year all. I shan't be making the comment I made last Jan which went along the lines of 'Yay 2021! Now let's get back to normal'.

I did hear recently that it may be 12 months before it cools down enough for the 'serious' stuff to go on (JWST needs to be as cool as possible to detect some emissions).

It's away and in space, hopefully all the (many) next stages go smoothly. Happy Christmas and well done to all those at the ESA, NASA and everyone else involved. Time to pop some corks!

That's a good point. We arrive in the morning gloom and leave in darkness. At least we may see daylight!

Coronavirus: General discussion (see opening post for rules)

Can any of you out there expand on this? - Omicron: Schools prepared if Covid forces online move next term. I'm just curious if schools are actually making any preparations for this or is the BBC making something out of nothing? -
Yay, one of my favorite series of books. Rama (done right) will make for an epic series.

Almost finished Arcane on Netflix. Based on League of Legends it's a Netflix anime and it, to be quite frank, is amazing. The story, animation and pacing are all utterly captivating and I can highly recommend it to anyone wanting to watch something quite special.

There will be a big tidy-up when the site migration takes place (and yes, it IS coming). The reason we haven't done this kind of site cleaning is that Google would punish us for removing/moving content in search results. Seeing as the upgrade will cause this to happen anyway we are leaving it until then and we already have the plans as to what will go where. We will be very careful not to delete content, but some older forums will be moved/merged into other forums once the main migration has taken place and we will have a list for you as to what went where, although the seach function should be fine for locating old threads etc.

I bought one of these about 18 months back - https://www.amazon.co.uk/TECLAST-P20HD-Octa-Core-Processor-1920x1200/dp/B08C9V1SHB/ref=sr_1_14?keywords=android+tablet&qid=1638280099&sr=8-14 Great tablet for the price and has 4GB RAM. I think there still is a place for tablets (I keep mine in the bedroom) as it is a lot better on my eyes than a phone screen and I find small laptops a bit faffy consdering I have a decent work one.
