  1. Hi I'm waiting to restore an older version of the SIMS database, but as a separate database and not overwrite the existing one to login to a backup from some time ago. I have used SQL management studio to restore the backup to the server as a new DB name and can see all the tables and users in the DB. However, when I change the connect .ini to the second database name, all users come up as invalid username/password. Please could anyone advise what step I have missed so i can login to it? Thanks.
  2. Only us IT staff reset account passwords, however Active Directory Users and Computers can be installed onto any computer and then permissions assigned to restrict what they can do. Alternatively a script file can be made where the user can enter the logon username and then the new password.
  3. Thanks, I'm just looking for some evidence to back up the reasons why we shouldn't change if it was considered or given to me.
  4. I have no intention to change what we have but just wondered about MAT schools where each site had different setups. I think you get better performance put of a vanilla network.
  5. Does anyone still use RM ? if so, whats the advantages over a bespoke in-house network? Whats the typical support costs per year? if a school has always had a network built and managed in-house would there be any valid reasons to have it run and managed by a third party company such as RM, when they have a network that the team know inside out so can immediately resolve any issues that occur throughout the entire network.
  6. Somebody?? Surely only your IT staff have access to the cabs? Check your switches features. Ours have Loopback Detection enabled - if sockets are looped back, it automatically closes the 2 ports so network continues as normal. It will re-try after the set period (1 minute in our case), and will re-test. If it's still looped the ports will stay blocked, it not looped, both ports re-enabled. I also have syslog enabled so as soon as it's done, boom I get am email saying which switch where and what ports.
  7. Depending what camera you have, you can change the settings in camera for the various elements, with Nikon you can get Standard, Vivid etc. However I shoot in RAW always so everything is Post production.
  8. I have found VLANs are best for security - I have them for VOIP, CCTV, Access Control, Out of band management etc so essentially hidden from scanners unless you know the GW being used - I have 1 switch as a gateway for all VLANs so I can change the GW on a PC to access to VLANs from one PC. All our servers (25) and clients (1200) are all on the same VLAN with no performance issue or any other issues.
  9. Hi As part of carrying out a system overhaul, i'm interested to know power consumption of the server room. I have several servers, all with dual power supplies, 1 connected to the mains supply, 1 to an UPS. I have tried to SNMP walk the servers and find the O.I.D but unable to find any power related values. I found a couple of HP OID's that are meant to be related but cannot retrieve the value on them. I have several monitoring applications monitoring memory, HDDs, etc but would also like to graph or track power usage. I could just login to the iLO on each server to find it but idnt going to be much use to calculate a power consumption per day average. Anyone know how I can obtain this information other than manually going into the iLO interface? Does anyone track server power consumption, and if so how? thanks.
  10. Windows 10 Education here.
  11. I get Diamond Lamps from a company called iDNS. From what I recall I think they have the same warranty as the originals. Never had any issues and always gone 2000+ hours and then usually replaced when get dim rather than blowing. Some have gone to 2800 hours
  12. If the bulbs are sub £200 we replace them. However if they cost more than a new projector (especially some of the projectors we have that are 10+years old) we just replace the projector entirely as get the warranty with it.
  13. Ours expires end of January, and usually put in the order in December, but due to the pricing change in Jan, I have been told to wait until we return after Christmas. AS it takes a while for our large orders to be signed and processed, they said it would be covered if payment isn't received by 31st Jan. Also with being part way through a 3 year contract, apparently this is good for pricing as it's a renewal price rather than new price.
  14. Whys are updates causing issues for people? Mine are set to install at 3pm every day. if the computer is in use it won't restart, if it's not logged on it will restart. As for the WSUS space, never had any issues. Network bandwidth - never known it to have any impact. If there are big updates I just WOL the pcs and let them install over the weekend so staff don't get frustrated waiting.
  15. Not just me then - it's a PITA!
  16. I've clean installed/clean imaged several PCs, but opening the 'settings' icon still seems to be broken in the anniversary release. It either doesnt open, or flashes up then closes so unable to access windows update. I have just run winver on 2 of the imaged PCs, which is shown below. Both are showing different versions. I've also run systeminfo from command prompt which shows OS Build as OS Version: 10.0.14393 N/A Build 14393 Slightly confused as the higher version from WINVER has 5 installed updates, the lower version 6 updates. Any ideas? Windows 10 still seems 'broken' Apart from re-imaging again to sort the settings out, all the only guides fail to resolve the issue.
  17. had it not been for our school merge, then our original domain would have been from pre 2001 when I started. Created new domain in 2012 when did a cross forest migration from 2 old domains into 1, along with exchange. That was a fun summer!
  18. It's less hassle keeping it on-site and as you say if lose the internet, no internal communication. I know they mention about exchange being removed from on-site solution but i'll be keeping it on site as long as possible. I would just set up a new 2016 server then carry out a migration, which is as I've done through all the exchange versions over the years. have several system with email notifications for monitoring and would be a PITA to change everything over that points to our internal exchange server, and rely on the internet to deliver the emails.
  19. I'm in the process of upgrading Windows 7 /Office 2010 pcs to Windows 10/Office 2016 Things seems to be going well apart from the following: I can open both .doc and .docx files if I double click on either file type on a network drive (also added as a trusted location). However, if a document is emailed and tried to be opened from within OWA emails, the docx ones will open, but .doc comes up with the typical, check document permissions, make sure sufficient space , open with text recovery ., but I know the file is working. I've tried adding both the full FQDN and the Domain name of the webmail site it is downloading from , to the trusted locations list but with no joy. Anyone else had this and know of a solution? I've also changed in the policy so it's unticked for 'Enable protected view for files originating from the internet' without success.
  20. Issue resolved - Had to made the following change in GPO on the local server, not sure why though.. Open gpedit.msc (Group Policy Editor) Browse to Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options Enable “User Account Control: Admin Approval Mode for the Built-in Administrator account”,
  21. We need some WiFi clocks that can use NTP lol
  22. I'm waiting for someone to come up with an IP bell system controller unless it already exists. I used to get told the time was wrong on the pcs in relation to the bells, but it's hard to change when your using the NTP protocol which the first DC gets its time from the internet, and then NTP is used across everything IP based - PCs, Access Control , CCTV, Phones, so everything is spot on in sync, time wise
  23. D-Link isn't cheap. We are a purely D-Link network both switches and wireless , and their switches are more expensive than the likes of HP and Netgear. Whenever I've had any firmware issues they remote on, test the issue, contact their Taiwan engineers and then reply with a new firmware. Thats' service! Got some free training in London a few years back also. Can't knock it.
  24. I always wait a while before applying. It will be done the last week of term here!
  25. I've just set up my first physical 2016 Server and added to the domain. On going into themes, and trying to change the desktop icons, sound OR mouse pointer settings, I am getting the error below. What is causing this as there is very limited GPOs being applied to the OU with the member servers in, only proxy settings Any ideas? Thanks.
