In many instances when teachers got classroom PC's or teacher laptops they needed to use resources from admin and curriculum systems and although possible the complexity outweighed the risk of a single network, this became more true when they started using wifi laptops on old wi-fi systems without vlan abilities. The main security weak point is the user that leaves their workstation logged in and left unattended. Rob

We have a pair of twin shelf HP P4500 LeftHands. Been fairly solid appart from a but that made a shelf reboot ever 200 and something days. Rob

Well yes I got distracted in the middle of checking something, but all the Dells we have had in the last 10 years have had dedicated fans for the drives. You could run them forever with the side off. We also notice that you have to open the front door of the machine to check for drive failuers as the system status LED does not report drive failures (unlike the dels that flash the LCD and tell you what's up.) P.S. Regardless of havign two domains, you probably want to implement vlans. The two domains could exist on the same VLAN though, many schools droped the idea of a Physicaly separate ( or vlaned ) Curriculum/Admin network many years ago. Rob

What are the two Current switches at either end adn do they have a spare port? We run SHDS ( what Lan Extension Services became about 4 years ago ( LES and EES are old terms ) across 5 miles , we don't actualy run vlans across it ( it's routed insted ) but that's because of poor install by the I.T. Contractor who did not do as we expected. It's not at all diffcult to do though if everythignis the same at both sites and you have a L3 switch at the core on each site. Rob

If you have the VPN correctly configured then your connected to the school network so no need to RDP to your desktop. Rob

I would never buy another Buffalo. They are buggy, the AD intergration is sometimes flakey, the performance on NFS is appauling. We asted £1K on one. PC and a copy of openfiler does a much better job. Rob

Not seen it in recent years myself. We once had 50 RM pc's that all failed when the VRM capacitors failed. Worst PC's we ever bought , even worse than the Patriot Book PC's from PC world... Rob

Have you done any diagnostic work, like having an identiacl montor to plug in that's cold? What happens when you power cycle the monitor? What happens if you reboot the PC while the screen is flashing? What happens if you disconnecta and reconnect the vga? Tried pressing "Auto" to reset the display paramaters? Rob

what is your signage solution?

The Quad LNB will limit you to 4 channels of sat, how are you going to select that per screen? the DVB-T ( from the antenna can be swiitched as normal at the tv but that's not going to be scheduled. You won't be able to have signage and tv showing on the same screen without the signage server doing it. What you need is inputs from the DVB-T and DVB-S recivers going to you digital signage system. or rather the signage being able to pull streams from a TV server. Rob

We had KIS n-serise , the power cables kept being ripped out the back of the unit by careless staff and students, we had to engineer a plate to mount IEC sockets so that there was a breakaway facility. They still got damaged. Never bothered with the network connectivity. They were very very heavy. Our laptops are in "Inteligent" fixed lockers at the moment which require swipe card access. Another thing to point out is that 600 wireless devices could cripple whatever wireless network they are on. Rob

P.S.... We use OneLan TV, very expensive for what we get out of it which is why I suggest MythTV ( which will record shows for later viewing ).

Sounds like an ill concived plan to me, Where are the TV's going and what is the purpose of them? if your usign an amp then that sugest that one signal will go to all tv's. Look at MythTV with diskless front ends. Rob

Citrix all the way... with HP Thin Client Laptops.. But we are going to be reducing our esate of Laptops and revertign back to fixed I.T. ( still mostly Citrix thin terminals ). Rob

I think Inspirons use dumb chargers, Latitudes even as far back as the glory days of the D505 used inteligent chargers. Rob
