the board has power all the time the cable is plugged in, in some cases the machine is in a power state it cannot recover from. when you pull the cord their is still power in the supply smoothing capacitors that will provide enough juice to keep the mobo in standby for ~10s . If you pull the cord and then try to power on it should fully depleat the PSU instantly. TT

It will not use 100% of it's PSU or anywhere near, You want to go for a POE switch though for the IP cameras, using individual power adapters would be more wasteful. The more basic the switch, the less power it should consume so a basic 24Port Unmanaged, L2 switch will use less power than the advanced managed CISCO L3. Rob

Where was the unit stored, was it left to acclimatise in it's new location before being turned on? After reseating all cards, ram, etc. I would then look at testing another PSU. Rob

CCENT and CCNA are very much focused around the fundamentals of networking. And since many manufactures use command sets very similar to CISCO IOS you can often find your way round other vendors kit. Rob

You need to take control of your internet router so that your not limited by the ISP. Rob

it would make things interesting round here as we are 6Miles from the border so we could get an influx or an exodus of residents depending on the cost of living on each side of the border. I was driving the Wales england border last year and thought that one house next to another must be worth a different amount purely because it was subject to one set of policies.. Ok that does happen all over the world on country borders but we are a small island that's supposed to be united. If it does happen then I think they must be self sufficient. I can't directly tell you about VDI-IAB but we use full blown Citrix VDI and it can be overly complex at times which VDI-IAB neeatly addresses for smaller scale installs, I do intend to look at it for my own personal curiosity but at the moment we are building a new XenDesktop 5.6 Testbed with the view to going live replacing XD4 in the summer. We use XD to host our fledgling BYOD, the students connect via a heavily secured captive portal that only lets them connect to a VDI desktop, they get exactly and only what they would with one of our own devices, because of this take up is slow, but we have to protect our investment for everyone. If you need a partner then I can highly recommend Novus for Citrix and Vmware. They are excellent. Rob

Our bigest problem is getting Apps that are not within learnpad, you break Googles useage policy if you don't get tehm via PLAY or get direct authorisation from the author. And the delivery of the lessons to the device sometimes is a bit random. We have Toshiba in next wednesday to review them. Rob

I personaly use MythTv using a Hauppage NovaT-500 dual tuner. 3 Cards would cover all 5 UK SD muxes, you will need a HD Nova T to record on the HD channels. The Nova-T can support virtual recorders on one MUX channel so you can record more than one station at a time. If you don't want to use MYTHTV then teh Nova-T does come with some basic recording software. Rob

We have centralised print, anyone can print to a central queue and then print out at any one of 18 copiers across our two sites. We use P-Counter to set limits and keep track of what people print . We use cards to identify them ( also used on catering, library, door access, laptop lockers ) It's not saved us any money as they all now have access to fast quality colour printing in a4/a3 and double sided. Moral. Make sure you limit their use! Rob

take the smart host out and use direct delivery instead. see if that works , or try smtp.bt.net also look at email black lists and make sure you no listed ( use mxtoolbox.com ) check your MX record from outside. check your Reverse IP is configured correctly, if not get the BT DNS team to create one. we are on BT.NET but don't bother with using their smart host. 3.5 of us cover 1900, 2 sites, citrix, vMware, Bladecenter, sans, NAS, cisco, voip, vdi, cashless, door entry, follow me print, meru, iwb, inteligent (cough) rfid laptop locker, etc.... The fact our helpdesk open ticket count is fairly constant says we are coping ( mostly due to thin clients and VDI reducing equipment failure), if HP would admit liability on a 60% sudden failure on laptop batteries ( 60% of 460 ) then we could half our open tickets in a day!! I have a Cisco 877W , with 256Mb or ram, Advanced Enterprise K9 IOS.. It's only flaw is that the VPN won't work from my Android. So I will be changing to a Draytek 2830n Rob
