  1. We do have them set with "wait for the network" but when they try to login they sometimes get an error about logon servers not being available which never happened with win10 but I've not got a solution yet (trying to log in again immediately usually works)
  2. That would be great - thanks
  3. I don't think you need to encrypt desktops but honestly as it seems I'm encrypting everything else I may just go ahead and do those too.
  4. Well none of it looks like it will cost the school anything extra except (my) time so I imagine that it will probably be approved at the meting this morning. It seems to boil down to encrypt everything, record details about the encryption and what your users are up to on your systems. I do a fair bit of that already.
  5. Having finished the complete Lovejoy last month, I was looking through my collections for something else to watch and I realised I haven't watched all the transformers episodes yet. Three weeks later and I finally finish Season 2 (f**k me that's a long season) and I am ready to watch Transformers: The Movie (1984). The TV series made me realise just how many transformers I owned - then pretty much all of them got killed in the movie though and I didn't really get into the new ones. I have seen the film before - I definately went with my Dad to watch it when I was younger. I have a feeling I caught the end of it while I was at university as well but this is the first time I've really watched it in a while. I remember Ultra Magnus being in the movie and Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr, Arcee and I was under the impression that it would follow on from the TV series but no, no back story to any of those people just a 20 year jump into the mystical future of 2005. It apparently took that long for Megatron to learn how to shoot. 50 odd episodes of the TV series and he hardly manages to hit anyone at all (except Starscream) but 5 minutes into the film and he's not only managed to hit but actually killed loads of transformers. I didn't recall just how many transformers get wiped out but thankfully the Dinobots survived (except the one my brother had - ha!) and that's all that matters really. I'd have happily watched a series consisting of just Grimlock and Optimus Prime sorting out the world's problems. Unfortunately it looks like the Protectobots might have survived too (boo!) I had forgotten how good the soundtrack was - I have had Dare stuck in my head all morning. For those of you who haven't watched (and you've had 32 years to get around to it) it there's this planet eating transformer (Unicron - voiced by Orson Welles) that can only be killed by one thing in the universe. Rather than avoid it (doesn't seem a huge challenge given the size of the universe) he goes straight to where it is while the Autobots and Decepticons are embroiled in a war and killing each other left, right and centre. Unicron causing the loss of a couple of moons (eating them) and the imminent loss of their planet, isn't quite enough to end the civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons so they do a very good job of killing each other, some get resurrected (Megatron becomes the not-quite-so-good Galvatron and a whole bunch of Decepticons seem to get turned into Scourges and Cyclonus') but most of them seem to stay dead. Eventually Unicron is blown up by no-one's favourite Autobot, Rodimus Prime, using the one thing that could kill him. Handily Unicron's head seems to replace one of the moons he ate earlier in the film, Unicron may have survived had he not decided to eat it as it didn't look like it would have caused him much harm if it had been kept safely outside of his body. Even though I know it's a cartoon and even though I know he comes back - "Heroes Never Die!" - Optimus Prime's death still gave me a lump in my throat. Loved the film, best thing I've watched all year. Could listen to the soundtrack all day (and I just might - especially the rock version of the theme tune!) Never has the disclaimer "Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental" felt so necessary as it does in this cartoon film about giant genicidal alien robots.
  6. I've been asked to find out how this will affect us and whether we need to do anything. Do any of you know of any handy guides to how it relates to us in education? thanks
  7. If you don't get all SSD - don't put the OS on them. Seems quite a waste. I've just been looking at this but we haven't decided anything yet. I am leaning towards a bunch of SDD in RAID 5 as opposed to my usually bunch of SAS in RAID 10. I'm not even sure an all SSD server would need a RAID card. I'm not buying mine for a few months though so let me know if having a SSD fileserver turns out to be a mistake. Pricing isn't massively different between the two setups. Also spotted an SFP+ card that could connect it to my fibre switch for my all SSD fileserver but then I'm not sure about that either.
  8. the third screen looks a bit like what happened once when a teacher here closed their laptop onto a pen
  9. 10. We use MLS eclipse hosted
  11. Lock Controllers CCTV Almost all the software that comes under the heading "it's worked for the last 10-15 years why should we change it?"
  12. There isn't a 32bit version of exchange 2010 that I'm aware of so it's definately the 64bit one you want (and must have installed). The below should get you the exchange build number so you can check you really have update 11 successfully installed Get-Command ExSetup | ForEach {$_.FileVersionInfo} It does sound a bit like you might want to start again though as I've never encountered those errors. (new exchange vm, migrate everything, sort out old exchange server, migrate back) If not maybe run installation as recovery from the previous update ( Setup /m:RecoverServer )
  13. What model are they?
  14. Your switches may show the strength of the fibre connection or at least have a fibre diagnostics option
  15. We use these. Bought a couple of dozen for the staff who regularly present and they get on with them fine https://www.amazon.co.uk/August-LP200-Wireless-Presenter-Shortcut/dp/B00CXNQR0Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478183702&sr=8-1&keywords=august+presenter
  16. I've managed it with sql 2014 (i didn't try 2012) on the same server. The tools that came with it worked fine but if it's causing an issue could you not just uninstall the tools, install dpm and then put them back? My problems were with the encryption keys and the service accounts (and not realising that I had to format the array for the backups with ReFS). I was installing from scratch on a 2016 server I had just installed.
  17. We've been asked to do this too but we couldn't come up with a good way of doing it so in the end the Head just made it a policy not to send emails between 7pm and 6am unless important. It cut out almost 90% of emails that were being sent at those times and the vast majority of the remainder are between staff and parents/students
  18. Adding the Server 2016 KMS key to my 2016 KMS server resulted in a so far irreversible windows 7 not genuine warning on my windows 7 machines that called in before I noticed it. Similar to the problem described in this forum posting: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/98d40290-8dc3-4abe-89d0-36cf8c2971e0/windows-10-enterprise-kms-host-renders-windows-7-enterprise-kms-clients-not-genuine-?forum=win10itprosecurity but obviously I used a 2016 kms server not a windows 10 one. Our newest technician has been assigned the fun job of finishing off the windows 7 migration asap now (we had done about 75% of our windows computers over the last 6 months) - he was to have it done by the end of the year In our case re-arming doesn't work I would have to recommend using KMS only for windows 7/2008r2 and Office and using Active Directory activation for Windows 10/2016 if you have a mixed environment in case you fall victim too.
  19. Yes. Quite. Adding the Server 016 KMS key to my 2016 KMS server resulted in a so far irreversible windows 7 not genuine warning on my windows 7 machines that called in before I noticed it. Similar to the problem decribed in this forum posting https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/98d40290-8dc3-4abe-89d0-36cf8c2971e0/windows-10-enterprise-kms-host-renders-windows-7-enterprise-kms-clients-not-genuine-?forum=win10itprosecurity but obviously I used a 2016 kms server not a windows 10 one. Our newest technician has been assigned the fun job of finishing off the windows 7 migration asap now (we had done about 75% of our windows computers over the last 6 months) - he was to have it done by the end of the year In our case re-arming doesn't work but reimaging them does but my manager doesn't see the point of reimaging windows 7 only to reimage windows 10 a few weeks later I would have to recommend using KMS only for windows 7/2008r2 and Office and using Active Directory activation for Windows 10/2016 if you have a mixed environment in case you fall victim too.
  20. If you attach the new server(s) to the same namespace and replicate/move (backup/restore) the folders to where you need them I think they'll still be accessible but I haven't done that. I have replica fileservers - when I add a new one I just add it to the replication pool and after remove the old one. I normally rename both servers at that point. Renaming doesn't bother dfs at all
  21. I'm not quite sure I follow. But once DFS is set up it doesn't matter what you name the servers as they access the shares through the dfs name. You can rename the servers all you like and it won't break it
  22. I think it sounds a bit DNS-like. Can you change dhcp to eliminate one of the dns servers and then the other?
  23. At the weekend I was offered the options to watch either The Interview or The Hallows. Although nether really appealed to me I eventually chose The Hallows. The plot is basically some people from London move to the middle of nowhere in Ireland. The man is employed by a logging company to cut down some of a forest which upsets the superstitious locals as they think the forests spirits will get upset. They do. No where near as bad as its IMDB score would make out. In fact I thought it was reasonably good although they do make some questionable decisions. I did think at one point they might all die from carbon monoxide poisoning from the petrol/diesel generator they had in their basement but they spent quite a while in the room with it running and it definitely wasn't in the top 3 problems they faced. Worth it if you come across it - not worth money or effort unless you really like the genre
  24. In-place upgraded one of my domain controllers (2012R2-2016) at the end of last week. It took 18 minutes Worked with 3 minor failings: 1) It ended with a licence acceptance screen which had to be clicked on before remote administration could be performed and 2) the NPS service failed to start automatically and I had to do that myself and 3) Had to redo the windows and office kms licences
  25. They have the kids (years 3-6) take photos, create movies adn use other apps to do similar things but then ideally they want to be able to 1) bac up the work incase the ipad fails, 2) perhaps use the photos/videos in other work done on the PC suites and 3) give the teachers access to the stuff from their own computers. I didn;t think it was possible but I was tasked with finding out and I thought if it can be done someone here has probably done it
