Do any of you guys work in the main School office?
Sagima replied to Snookered's topic in General Chat
We're too messy to be allowed to be on public display -
Our staff got a Surface 3. We told them if they wanted a case for it they'd have to pay for it themselves. Most people got a jiffy bag from stationary cupboard - some people got a sleeve. The bag seems to work quite well though. We have a dozen or so minidisplayport adapters for when they need to connect via vga to something but for the most part they mirror with airparrot We don't image them in general (DT does get done) - their software is available through remoteapp. We use the rj45 adapter for the DT ones.

Microsoft to move out of the education market?
Sagima replied to Dave_O's topic in Licensing Questions
Or - Google said they'd move something taxable to the UK's jurisdiction if some encouragement towards schools to using Google's GAfE was forthcoming from UK.gov. -
basic question about backing up a DC

Microsoft to move out of the education market?
Sagima replied to Dave_O's topic in Licensing Questions
Well hopefully azure will get a nice near-enough-free-for-education tariff and I can move my server room into the cloud completely. I wonder if they'll let us swap the basic win10 licence that come switch pcs to the educational one for ltsb reasons for free. Either that or gooldle chrome os/linux is going to become very popular all of a sudden -
Microsoft to move out of the education market?
Sagima replied to Dave_O's topic in Licensing Questions
Is this everything? eg Windows itself or just things like exchange, sharepoint etc which have free microsoft cloud alternatives? It sounds like the former to me but I'm hoping Ive misread it. -
I imagine bt get fed up with the contractors putting diggers through their cabling and the contractors get annoyed that bt want to dig up their nice new roads and paths to lay stuff

Java is Dead: And there was much rejoicing in the streets
Sagima replied to sonofsanta's topic in Educational Software
My take on it was that what is now the java web app would now just be baked into the browser - I think they claim it's something new but "Java Web Start Technology" will probably end up being basically the same thing only getting updates in edge/ie11 via windows update and via browser updates via chrome/firefox -

If it doesn't run on the currently supported versions of software then the department in question has to find a replacement in their next budget. We don't support things that old - SMT seemed to think that was perfectly reasonable when I took it to them about 5 years ago. Usually there's a free html5 or something version of it knocking around on the internet. A few times the response has been - I have a powerpoint that shows basically the same thing. Twice the response has been "oh we haven't used that for years" - then why is it on your software request list every summer then? We currently only support making things work on the last two versions of java/flash/silverlight, ie11 and the latest chrome, 64bit windows 7 sp1 (we dropped support for osx this year) Only works on IE10 of earlier - gets replaced or dropped Requires java 1.4 (or indeed 8u30) - gets replaced or dropped only works on windows xp/vista - gets replaced or dropped 16 bit software of any kind - gets replaced or dropped -
Caching proxy or direct internet connection?
Sagima replied to win's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We haven't cached anything in years. I vote for Straight to the internet! Saying that though - if you have a lot of byod devices then something that caches the apple ios / microsoft windows updates might be an idea although it doesn't seem to affect us much it is noticeable on the firewall logs just how many gb gets downloaded- 1 reply

It's so similar to office 2013 that we have no objections to people having it although it's voluntary at the moment in case there is some problem that we haven't come across yet. It will probably skip the summer refresh but be included on the post-summer image updates so its rollout is gradual.

There are no issues with virtualising exchange or sql. You shouldn't give either variable/dynamic memory and you need to set the memory limits within sql for its various instances. We don't virtualise the fileservers, media servers, backup servers, DCs or ConfigMgr

That might be the answer I was looking for - thanks!

I was hoping for something that didn't have me opening up the properties for 100 distribution groups and setting the allowed users when I really just want to stop one user for one week but otherwise carry on letting him email people as he needs to. Our exchange 2013 server is local - we only sync stuff to O365 so the staff/kids can get their free copies of office really (couple of other things)

Hi Do any of you know how to restrict a user to sending emailas only to other users and not to and distribution groups? even restricting sending to groups based on the number of members would be useful thanks Sagima

Anyone with a BYOD/One-to-One Policy fancy showing it off?
Sagima replied to CyBeRkId2002's topic in School ICT Policies
You don't want to come here to see one done properly! - only the head is really in favour of it Our admissions officer doesn't like it - she thinks seeing students using their own devices in class looks untidy and like they aren't paying attention to the teacher. She thinks the whole image they convey is wrong even if they are cheaper than buying our own stuff for the pupils to use. Our head of years 7-8 doesn't like them because he thinks they cause far too much disruption when they get lost and they are status symbols that upset the poorer children who don't have the latest and greatest models. Another of our senior teachers thinks they are too much of a distraction. Several of the teachers think that relying on the students to actual bring a charged device into school is asking too much so are unwilling to involve them more than peripherally in their lessons. The one place they have been successful is children doing work in the library and their respective common rooms and it has removed a lot of pressure on the ICT suites outside of lesson time. Our policy basically boils down to Years 7-8 banned from bringing in tablets and phones (largely ignored) and from using them in lessons (blind eye mostly turned) Years 9-11 are allowed to use them in lessons unless the teacher objects but teachers prefer booking ict suites and generally use this as a way to keep the kids quiet that finish their work early otherwise they are kept in bags Years 12-13 same as 9-11 but teachres expect them to have them on their desks and refer to them - the smaller class sizes make the management of the class a bit easier -
Watched The Unborn and Evil Dead recently. The Unborn has a fairly good plot although the script and acting is a bit poor. Not to give too much away but its a film about a demon who was sort of summoned by some Nazis in a camp in WW2 and now is trying to take over the body of a surviving twin in the modern day. Idris Elba and Gary Oldman are a bit wasted in it although it is interesting to hear Idris put on an american accent that seems to consist of saying the first two words of each sentence in american and the falling back to his normal voice. Gary doesn't even put that much effort in. Probably just the right length and one of those films that appears to have been ruined by having it cut to get a PG certificate judging by the reviews while the uncut version is sufficiently entertaining to sit in and watch with a bowl of crisps. The 4.8 stars on IMDB that is got is really quite harsh - it's probably a 6.5 The Evil Dead - I got roped into watching this because my cat had died and seeming everything we tried to watch was either funny (which I wasn't in the mood for) or contained cats (and was thus a bit upsetting at the time) - it was getting a bit ridiculous when looking for things to watch that day that didn't have a cat in them. We had been watching the TV series which is mildly amusing (we particularly like xena wondering around for no reason - it might not be xena but I don't know the character's name and I'm not good with them anyway) but my husband assured me the film wasn't and it isn't. It's not terrible - it seems quite good considering its age and budget but it's not really my cup of tea. It's old enough that I sort of knew what it was about but I don't really understand why Ash wasn't infected (although I have yet to see the sequel so maybe he was) or where xena comes into it as in the tv series she claims to have been involved (i think - I am usually half asleep by the time we get around to watching the tv version) presumably it will all be made clear in tonight's episode. Of the two I probably preferred The Unborn but I have never cared for low budget horror movies or zombie movies (two of my husband's favourite genres unfortunately so I've seena lot now). I'll probably have to add vampire films to that now - they used to be cool but now they just seem to be a bunch old men pretending to be teenagers so they can pick up schoolgirls.

Our policy is being amended slightly (to better align job titles and roles) but it's generally the same as what it was. It's publicly available on our website - I'm not sure if it has to be or not

Email Policy / Ideas For Reducing Email
Sagima replied to Colindean2000's topic in How do you do....it?
We technically have a no email 6pm-6am rule but noone really follows it. We are currently trying to disuade (is that a word?) people from using AllStaff and maybe target theeir emails slightly better but teachers don't have the time to look through the address book and this way guarantees the people that need to see it will -
That was lovely. Now I'm relaxed and have a smile on my face

Surely this is the immediate answer

Here it's the Data Protection Officer (bursar) and to whomever whoever he delegates that to, currently The Head of IT and therefore to the rest of us in the department (mostly me) when the boss doesn't want to do it. Which is never unless he's out of the office - he finds the cctv system fascinating and it's why I think we ended up with it last year rather than estates who looked after it for years but hated it. SMT are allowed to request footage for themselves or anyone else but the resons for it are logged and we put the vieo somewhere we can get rid of it if no action is pursued from it. We've only once had to hand any to the police - our front door camera accidentally caught a burglary across the street
