Java Runtime Environment 8 Update 31 (and 7 Update 75/76) released
smithson83 replied to Arthur's topic in Downloads
Afternoon @LeMarchand, I've been testing a J8 silent install with those switches, but cannot get the auto update unticked in CP. Am I doing something wrong? -
Good luck, hope it goes well.

The school went down this route prior to my arrival, was a PITA, we had to modify the print driver, was the old way to do it. Otherwise it was a per user, per device setting. When our lease was up, we added SafeCom to our Ricoh MFP's (supplied and setup by Ricoh), this integrates into AD, and sits on top of the display on the printers. Much easier to manage, no driver modification required and everything is held on the print server until they "Pull" it to the they happen to arrive at. We have a Staff B&W (driver for Mono printer of same line) set as default, a Staff Colour, and a pupil Push printer (not held in a queue so don't need to set up 100's of Pupil ID's etc, not sure if you can assign multiple logins to a generic account)

We have two Hyper-V hosts, both equal, both up to running the entire VM set. We use local storage on the two Dell R720's and replicate the VM's from one to the other using HyperV-Replica. the replications are quick, the servers are responsive and we've never had an issue we are a 400 pupil Primary with ~300 machines.

These are an awesome idea, and idea long overdue. I want one, I want a few. Think i'll be pre-ordering one later. However, am I missing something, why would you pay £2 less for a single USB port.... ****EDIT**** added to my wishlist, you never know....

Ruckus Wireless Resellers - Not All The Same

Sorry to hijack @jszkudlapski what do you mean by orientation, all ours are ceiling mounted in the middle of the room, they seem to provide the same coverage 360' on all three axis (if you don't count the concrete reinforced floors ... -
Stop student seeing where there documents are

We currently have Homedrive specified in AD, and it shows the full path. Does any one know if doing it via GPP have any positive or negative effects, other than not displaying the full UNC path -
then how to you map the drive? you create a hidden drive map. our kids have an Apps drive for certain software, but its hidden via GPP. Not a big step up, but at least staff can't see the S: drive and think, oooh, whats that...
-
if you change your sims.ini file to point at the UNC path instead of the drive letter, then it works fine without a drive map These two lines SIMSDirectory=\\SIMs-Server\Share\sims SIMSSetupsDirectory=\\SIMS-Server\Share\sims\Setups

Remove missing ipad from configurator

If you press Alt then right click, "Unsupervise" becomes "Remove" -
We have a few mobile TouchScreen PC's, built in wireless and a 5m mains cable, they're great, all you need is a plus socket and you have a classroom. There are loads of mounts and trolleys out there, but essentially its a wall mount on wheels We have something similar to this with a 55" attached

Virtualisation - VMware vs HyperV

@sonofsanta We have our server via EES, but like like @tmcd35 above, we have two invoices, one for our 60 FTE's and one for our two Datacenter Licences, but it all comes under the same EES login -
That's awesome.... I want one

Virtualisation - VMware vs HyperV
smithson83 replied to BKGarry's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
OK, so here comes the stupid question, and forgive me if I've missed the point by a country mile. So you can purchase a DC licence (assuming one host and two CPU's), not install it, but run as many Std's as you like under VMware/ESXi etc? -

So you licence all your Servers individually? Does that not work out a lot more than a single(or multiple depending on the number of hosts etc) DC licence? -

All you guys running VMware EXSi etc, how do you licence your Server OS's??? With MS 2012R2 Datacentre you install it on your host, run Hyper-V and all your Server2012-Std VM Servers are included in the price. If you run VMware as your hypervisor, can you still licence DC and get all your VM's included? -

I'd be looking to buy a Tone Generator / Probe Kit something like this. Plug the tone generator in to the cable you want to trace, then use the wand to pick up the tone and follow it back to the cabinet -
I know you would never get a 10Gb connection from the aggregation, as a single connection would use a single port within the aggregated link. But I was thinking along the lines of average day to day usage. Pro's and Cons etc ie 1x 10Gbe – You have a greater possible bandwidth, but could possibly saturate this connection with a large VM replication / backup. 10x 1Gbe – You max out any connection to 1Gbps (minus over heads of course), but you can only ever use a 10th of the whole available bandwidth.

OK a bit misleading, but we currently have 8x1Gb (2x 4 port gigabit cards)in both our servers. The 8 Ports are currently aggregated at the switch using LACP and teamed at the server using 2012R2's standard multiplexor driver. I was looking into upgrading our core to 10Gbe switches and it got me thinking. Would 1x 10Gbe NIC per server be better than 10x 1Gbe connections teamed to act as one?

Sorry, off topic... I see you have the GoCabby's there, how are you finding them? We have recently got two, they seem quite robust apart from the pull handles. -
I had a bit of a 'mare setting this up, but it was me missing something. But once it was set up it was great, just set a GP to allocate the SSID (hidden in our case) for the laptops to use, set another up for staff (so you can track who is using it), set up a third restricted guest one and don't look back. Pro's: Its a lot more secure as you're not sharing the key (there isn't one, kinda) Con's: You have to connect them to the network initially, either physically or via an "onramp" ssid so they can get the GP **EDIT** From a user perspective, if eg you set up one for staff, then they log on to the wireless as their NW username and password, so they don't have to come bothering you for the key. and then (depending on your wireless solution) you can see who is using it. if I need to find someone in school, I check to see which AP their phone is connected to, to narrow the search.

How is this going, I have thought about doing something similar, but never got round to it.
