  1. iPads are designed and configured by Apple as personal devices. Even though Apple have introduced a few tools over the years they really want schools to go 1 to 1 with iPads
  2. I've seen this with lots of ipads in the past I'm pretty certain it is a security feature as explained here https://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/why-doesnt-my-iphone-reconnect-to-wi-fi-after-i-turn-it-on
  3. We have Impero Education Pro at the moment and are just about to renew but looking at the website it now advertises 5 cloud based products backdrop, classroom, remote control, web check and wellbeing. I was wondering if anyone has used these and if there a comparison chart of features As with our direction of travel towards the cloud it may make sense to change over if it allows more management offsite as well as when the devices are on our network.
  4. It looks like it is a feature apple introduced with mojave. I've not tried it but this JAMF forum seems to have a script that can add the microphone to the TCC.db for the user https://www.jamf.com/jamf-nation/discussions/30989/enable-microphone-using-privacy-preferences-policy-control-setting
  5. Apple is paranoid about privacy and ipads are not really meant to be shared devices or school owned therefore they have always had the approach the user is king. Over time they have realised organisation need to be able to manage devices but still never at the expense of the users ability to turn things off (though at least DEP means you can prevent profiles from being removed). More details about location data and tracking are set out here https://www.apple.com/privacy/docs/Location_Services_White_Paper_Nov_2019.pdf the work around that used to work was setup restriction on each ipad and then set location service on so the user could not turn it off..... now it is only lost mode that allow the device to be tracked down provided it is online of course...
  6. How old are the ipads ? Some very old models don't have GPS and rely on WIFI external ip address to get the location info. Also it looks like Apple end user privacy paranoia might have something to do with it as well (see Forcing GPS Location in link below) https://documentation.meraki.com/SM/Monitoring_and_Reporting/How_Systems_Manager_Approximates_the_Location_of_a_Managed_Device If you have a static external Ip address you can add it to the location settings so that the ios devices show up as being in the right location if on the school network. Set in Systems manager > Configure > General > Network locations
  7. If there are computers left on in school you could use freedom 2 roam to do a RDP session onto that set of computers then then you don't need to worry (as much) about any nasty stuff on the local teachers computers
  8. now avalible here https://lgfl.planetestream.com/Default.aspx?search=gridstore&page=1

Appleloops is the way to go. There is a script at the end of this https://www.jamf.com/jamf-nation/discussions/30633/best-practices-to-package-garageband-10-3-2-with-all-loops that automates the entire process
  11. Different from your question I know but If you use MS Teams then this might be of interest. "Parental email digest in Microsoft Teams for Education" https://www.tonyishere.co.uk/parental-email-digest-in-microsoft-teams-for-education/
  12. We negotiated the price down to less than £5 per device per year when buying 4 years but since then have used the LGFL licences that are included in part of their Broadband service saving us lots of money. It was tricky to get a straight answer about price from Cisco as it seems to change depending on who you talk to.
  13. I take it you need more info than https://www.ultratools.com/tools/dnsLookupResult can provide for the school domain
  14. Thanks for the advice and link. At the moment I just testing it before looking at the more involved admin classes from MDM I spoke to apple and they couldn't resolve it but I have managed to find a solution but it is a little bit strange. Here goes the explanation On Student iMac 1 I added an student managed apple id (created on Apple school manager) to the icloud account details in system preferences . After a restart this allowed “classroom” preference pane to run. I could then enter the details (pin etc) and add it to the class I then went back to the teacher iMac and added an iCloud account from Apple School Manager Then on imac 2 before I added the next icloud account classroom appeared in system preferences and I was able to add this mac to the class without adding an icloud account. I could do this for all the other mac in the lab. So it would appear that either the student or the teacher need to have a Managed Apple id to be able to use Classroom on the mac. To test this theory I setup a different user on the teachers mac and a new “class” in the classroom app. This user didn’t have an managed apple id in the icloud settings. When I tried to add a student to this class from a mac with no account on it, the classroom preferences initially appeared and ran but the class disappear before I could join it. I suspect there are some online checks that take place to ensure that you have the rights to run classroom to stop anybody using it.
  15. They are teachers created classes. The apple classroom app runs fine on the teachers mac. Without the Classroom preference pane I can't allow the student iMac access to the class by adding the 4 digit pin.
  16. I'm trying to get apple classroom running on a set of 16 iMac's. I can install the teachers Classroom application fine and that run ok as far as I can tell. The issue comes when I want to add a student on a mac to a class, to add them I try and run the classroom preference pane in system preferences. It just brings up an error message You can’t open the “Classroom” preferences pane because it is not available to you at this time. To see this preferences pane, you may need to connect a device to your computer. Looking online the computers are the right specification and the OSX version is 10.14.4 and there are no updates avalible from apple. The mac's are all DEP and enrolled in meraki MDM I thought it might be a bluetooth or wireless issue but they are both on. I even tried tethering to my phone incase it was a filtering issue with the school broadband. Has anybody been able to get the classroom 2.0 app for mac working ? https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT206151
  17. As well as the very useful IMRS document you might find the spreadsheet "02-2. Schools Retention Schedule" here https://www.hackneyservicesforschools.co.uk/extranet/gdpr may be useful as it outlines the retention period and what the legislation applies. Though keeping school pupil record for 25 years could be interesting, anybody dust off the floppy drive.... It is also slight ironic that a GDPR service with a first page that lists the restrictions on distribution of the documents has them put on a public website
  18. Looks like still in pilot phase for primary https://www.capita-sims.co.uk/resources/blog/next-generation-of-sims 2020 might be a bit optimistic for it to work in secondary .....
  19. remember to change to untick the "Allow modification of wallpaper (iOS 9+)" in settings - restrictions - iOS restrictions (supervised) . Only if the iPads are supervised.
  20. If you have managed iPads you could try using the youtube kids app instead of full youtube app. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/youtube-kids/id936971630?mt=8 However even on managed devices the user can always change the ip address settings to static to use a different DNS server anyway. Personally I'm looking at putting iPads in a different ssid and subnet to manage the filtering them that way but that needs to get added to a long list of work to be done.
  21. Hi Are you using the same itunes account for each device ? or using managed distribution to the devices rather than itunes account ? Can you download apps manually ok ? apple uses various ports on the ip range 17.0.0.0/8 mostly (TCP 2195 2196 5223) these need to be open for push notifications but if it works for 8 it should work for all of them. I've been having issue since 9.3.2 was launched with pushing apps and think apple might have changed something in the back end.
  22. I've had the problem with apps allocated from meraki trying to be pushed from the us store. To get around this I had to go to system manager -> apps and specifically set the store to Britian(uk) then finding the app. It appears that some providers have different versions of their apps on the different stores. This is not always the case and I've not come across this for apple id based deployment and meraki but device based might be different.
  23. It might be that apple ports are being blocked see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202944. We have asked for all traffic to and from apples ip addresses 17.0.0.0/8 to be allowed through and that seemed to resolve the issue.
