New ISP recommendations
Face-Man replied to MisterTechMan's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
If you are in a community Fibre area you can get a 3Gbps connection from £49 a month. We've not used them in schools but have connections into other buildings and it works well. https://communityfibre.co.uk/3-gigafast -
Google Workspace and MDM of personal iOS devices
Face-Man replied to jthompson's topic in Cloud Services
If you don't use shared ipads setup (I've not done this so can't fully advise) my understanding is that on IOS devices there is only one copy of an app so all the school accounts will be alongside any personal gmail, google accounts. If the devices are school own and supervised then you can limit what accounts can be used on these devices but as you talk about personal devices this is not likely. If you do push the apps via MDM to the device if they are supervised you can remove the app and therefore access to the data. If the app is pushed to an unsupervised device then the app asks for credentials and is associated with the user itunes account you may be able to deleted it but if this is a personal account things can get messy especially if it is already installed before you add it. You can block a device in the google admin console so should be able to restrict access that way as well. -
KCSIE 2023 - updates that may impact IT
Face-Man replied to Ditto's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yes this guidance only applies to school in England... -
I've had to do this on mac with small Hard drives you might find first listing the contents on the users folder in date order by using ls -lt them you can remove the oldest folders from the bottom of the list

KCSIE 2023 - updates that may impact IT
Face-Man replied to Ditto's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
There are some more LGFL videos for SLT and Governors around KCSIE , safeguarding and web filtering review v checks https://national.lgfl.net/digisafe/kcsie/webfiltering -
Sign in app is great A lot cheaper and cloud based rather than data being stored on the local screen. All you need is an ipad and download the app to run the free trial
-
That is how it should be configured but I've been to lots of schools where the share permissions are all users - full control because the security is "done" via NTFS permissions - not how it should be but I've seen it so many times there is no harm in warning about it

KCSIE 2023 - updates that may impact IT
Face-Man replied to Ditto's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
There is an "online safety audit" document from LGFL available here https://app.hubspot.com/documents/7017625/view/317431985?accessId=beddd3 School can use this to assess there current compliance with KCSIE they also have some useful videos that you can point concerned staff towards to explain the implication of KCSIE 2023 https://national.lgfl.net/digisafe/kcsie this page also has a video as to what is expected by "filtering checks" that need to be carried out. Finally there is 30 minutes training for SLT and DSL - https://www.lgfl.net/training/default.aspx?c=dac7c0c1-07ef-46f9-98a7-f6d6a8c3d62b- 38 replies

You can switch this on when joining the domain see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250574831 But mac and AD break quite often hence NOMAD https://nomad.menu/ might be an option. You should also remember Mac's can't see NTFS permissions so if you have not secured a share with permissions the user on a Mac may be able to find lots of restricted files on your network.

Problems uploading a legacy VPP token to MDM
Face-Man replied to bknaggs's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
I've got the same issue Meraki MDM are saying that they no longer support legacy VPP tokens so you can no longer renew them. I've transferred most of the apps to a location in ASM which is fine for unallocated apps but it is and issue if you want to recall apps. I've a support call open with then to ask why they have removed this feature when apple still support. -
ipad not beeing added to meraki
Face-Man replied to chekmate1984's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
It will only go back on meraki if it is ADE in apple school manager, assigned to your meraki as mdm and the you have assigned settings in meraki ADE so that it automatically enrols. see https://documentation.meraki.com/SM/Device_Enrollment/Apple_Automated_Device_Enrollment_(ADE) otherwise you will need to manually added but it does mean that the profile can be removed by a user. -
There are lots of rumour of anew imac model coming out later this year. The main difference you will see with Apple silicon and ssd it will run a lot faster than your existing Mac even with the same amount of RAM. Don't forget you will need wired keyboard and mouse unless you have very well behaved kids.

If they have a new mac running on an m1 or m2 chipset make sure that you have rosetta 2 installed as per https://www.papercut.com/kb/Main/KnownIssues-macOS Also I'm not sure about how papercut on mac works but if you have vlans airprint struggles to cross to a different vlan http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/201131-airprint-over-vlans-subnets.html

New Offic365 Tenancy & onmicrosoft.com domain
Face-Man replied to timbo343's topic in Cloud Services
Depending on how your domain is setup users may have setup personal microsoft accounts using your MAT email. Microsoft were meant to stop this https://mspoweruser.com/microsoft-finally-blocking-users-creating-microsoft-account-work-email-address/ but I've still found accounts created this way especially when trying to join teams meetings from other organisations sending invites. -

[iphone] iPhone XS “cannot connect to app store” - help!
Face-Man replied to elsiegee40's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
A bit old I know but this users tapped on the search button 10 times in the app store and it came back https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7578331 and https://macreports.com/app-store-search-not-working-on-iphone-or-ipad-how-to-fix/ Also do you have a VPN setup ? if so try removing that. it might also be a regional thing with your location settings. -
We are looking for a couple of options for robust Stylus to use with Acer Spin 713 "active" pen (teachers) and Lenovo 300e "capacitive" stylus (students). Does anyone have recommendations that are good value for money.

It depends on what MDM you use but I know with meraki you can set the application that the webclip uses to open so can prevent it using safari as default. looking at https://developer.apple.com/documentation/devicemanagement/webclip it appears you need ios 14 or above. On a different note if you are an LGFL or NGFL customer you can use their "HomeProtect" product to filter access on iPads not the same as monitoring which was going to be via Impero before that was removed from their offer and https://www.facebook.com/imperosoftware/posts/addressing-the-issues-that-young-people-face-today-requires-a-robust-and-up-to-d/4019883198058733/

Our Head and Deputy Head have just bought brand new mac laptops and I've been given the job of setting them up. Their old ones were backed up using an old timecapsule but this is unreliable and a big risk as unsupported hardware. I'm going to set them up with onedrive but I know that they will save something vital locally that will then go missing. Also with Mac updates sometimes failing being able to rebuild the MAC from a backup like time machine would be invaluable. Does anyone have a recommendation for a backup solution ideally saving to the storage we get with 0365 or Google workspace as well as a local network copy. There is budget for a one off purchase but not for cloud storage revenue costs.

I think this is to do with a security feature of Microsoft defender not LGFL staffmail see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/security/office-365-security/safe-attachments-about?view=o365-worldwide . I've seen it come up on my outlook using office 365 not staffmail.

You could always go old school and suggest the teachers to stand behind the students and watch what they are doing on the ipads

We have used Nethelpdek (now called Halo) https://haloitsm.com/ ask for education prices as can get discount. Jira service desk is also good https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/service-management/features/service-desk

I might be miss-reading your request but I'm guess if they are quoting for support they need to know what you have and then they will work out what that would cost to support. Any new solution should be for them to design. Probably given the age of your equipment they will quote to replace it all with "their"solution as it will be cheaper to support this. It might be worth looking at this https://www.nen.gov.uk/advice/standard-network-design/ for ideas of what the school should be asking for in any new equipment. (not a perfect specification but a good starting point)
