Out of date/malconfigured certificates is often a sign that a website has been hacked. If they won't fix their certificate, consider them hacked, block them and report them to the ICO. If you bodge it your end then their website could actually get hacked and you wouldnt know which breeches data protecion and cyber security guidance.

I see where you are coming from but I do disagree. IT is just a tool like a pencil or a pen, you don't procrastinate over exactly what pen you give someone to draw a diagram, it can be drawn with a pencil pen crayon or marker pen. What matters is giving them the pen in the first place, any device, as long as it works. Now here we come to the crux. Windows laptops are overpriced, and less reliable and for a 1:1 rollout it is the third device out of the three main ones I would chose. Ease of set up ease of management and simplicity/reliability and low cost are what makes 1:1 schemes work or not - so it needs to be considered much more carefully not dismissed as a "lazy it tech who wants less hasle". I've not seen many (any??) whole school daily use cases that actually require a windows laptop other than specialist subjects which should have specialist IT suites. A chromebook or ipad will do the job perfectly for 95% of what is neede on the daily.

Interstingly in that DFE guidance it mensions nothing about filtering school devices at the pupil's home. it does say "filter all internet feeds, including any backup connections " but that appears to be talking about all on premise feeds including on premise backup feeds. Anyone got any more clarification?

I disagree - If I was tendering for an MIS, which I will never ever have to again, their offering wouldnt even meet the requirements of the tender and I would class it as not fit for purpose as it doesnt even comply with DFE/Gov best practice on cloud first offerings. " SIMS is simply using the cloud for infrastructure hosting which according to GOV and thus DFE is to be avoided. I mean it's only thorny for you as your encouraging using personal unmanaged devices for school use which to be honest in this day and age is not a good idea, especially for things like classcharts. We've allowed staff to use authenticator as it doesnt actually store any pupil and staff data and provided ipads so that they don't need to use their own devices.

Usually you would want the manufacturer specific tranciever in the switch, e.g cisco in a cisco unifi in a unifi. The workstations/server network card device being a different manufacturer doesnt ususally matter. So yes should work with a unifi 10GB trasnciever in the unifi switch.

This is an interesting one. I guess the best thing to do would be to instruct them not to use personal phones or wattsapp for any school communications. Put in it your staff IT policy too. At least then, you've covered yourselves if someone does something silly then it is their professionality on the line for not following the policies and instructions from the Head?

Usually best to ask the manufacturer of the software for firewall documentation as there may be all sorts of weird and wonderful places it could be trying to load or save data to.

Theres a setting in the gogle admin console to stop pupils logging in with their non school google accounts. Best practice advises for this to be enabled.

Done. But do yourself a favour, take the world "laptop" and delete it from your vocabulary. 1:1 windows devices are a total mess both to set up and manage on the daily. You'd be waaay better off looking at 1:1 chromebooks or ipads as they just work. You shoud add another answer to the question What percentage of leavers take up the offer of keeping them for further education: We don't let them keep them, all devices get repurposed for other pupils to use.

Well you can put SIMS into a box ...a 20 year old box ................. as no one in their right mind is going to go through a gynormous procurement excercise, risk getting sued, and then pick the one that literally has not had one improvement in the last 10 years and have lost 30% of the market in the last year or two? It's Arbor v Bromcom a two horse race. SIMS is dead in the water as far as I can see and once the 3 year contracts that the whole country was forced in to are over I think it will cease to exist.

If your talking about electric standing desks then the school may need to up it's budget if you think £300 is way too much - for you as you aint gonna get £100 desks for this purpose. Costco stuff is really good I use their stuff in my garage.

Powerchute is APC UPS shutdown software isn't it? Maybe try uninstalling it for now, see if it cures it.

Put verbose log in messages on in GPO so that you can see if its pausing on a gpu setting

I wouldnt worry about it too much just be yourself and you'll trouble shoot around it just stick to the usual IT methodology of starting with the basics, is it "turned on" and work your way down from there, you'll get it. As people are discussing the merits of prcatical assessments I have always find them to be quite useful as it immediatly shows what kind of problem solving methodology they have or if they have one at all - someone who lurches around random ideas or who simply sits there and stares at the broken PC clueless is unlikely to be a great asset. Problem solving skills are nothing to do with intelligence some people just cant think around a problem logically and others are really really good at it and they tend to make excellent techs/engineers.

Airtag is gonna be the only thing that works on inanimate objects. Even better if you can stick one on the inside of it.

It still works though - building W11 workstations as we speak
