  1. Haha yeah actually on/off, volume, freeze screen and input select are pretty much all any teacher needs. Theres a big gap in the maket for a budget remote control with 4 big buttons (a bit like your nannas old house phone)
  2. Its a guideline, something for the schools to aspire to meeting. It says so in the first paragraph. "These standards should be used as guidelines to support your school or college use the right digital infrastructure and technology." Wheras if you look at the welsh gov filtering standards we've just been sent, it is a non negotiable instruction in the first paragraph. "Schools should create and maintain a safe learning environment for children."
  3. Well modern meteorlogical offices cant figure out if there are clouds in the sky or not noawadays so doesnt suprise me they can't predect a volcano errupting
  4. Got two 10 year old DS2413 here still going strong, still getting software updates. I wouldn't touch another NAS suplier to be honest.
  5. John can I ask a question (you may not be able to answer based on the recent years legal shenanigans) The main issue here seems to stem from the fact that a country wide MIS is being sought but the tender/contract is going through third party IT providers who are going to take some cream off the top of this massive contract, not directly from MIS suppiers. Shouldnt the tender process have been directly from actual MIS suppliers not random third party IT companies? Like it doesnt make sense to me - literally if you burst in to my office said to me hey were tendering for a new MIS Fujitsu are coming in at 10am I'd be like what the heck have they got to do with any of it they aint an MIS suppler, get Bromcom Arbor etc etc in to my office instead?
  6. Been running my school on used servers for years. Absoloutly no reason to pay through the nose for a new server when you can let a moronic fortune 500 company recycle a thousand servers after 2 years and then buy it for 25% of the new cost. Win win!!
  7. I *think* you need apple configurator full stop so get on either an ipad or a mac mini - used/refurb would do as long as it's not _too_ old.
  8. I miss my 5412ZL that was such a a great switch. So sad when the LA forced us to replace it all with Aruba 1u units. Not so great switch.
  9. Given the 90% faliure rate in 3 years on our fleet of acers I would standy by my "avoid like the plague" statement no matter what warranty they offer now.
  10. We have to order Lenovos due to funding rules in wales - but if I could buy on my own I would be ordering Dells as they were the most solid and long lasting of all, and also I would be trying 1 year group out on HPs to see how well they last. Most of my hundreds of lenovos have been OK but I know other schools have had serious issues semmingly with batches of them. Avoid Acer like the plague.
  11. Pm'd you
  12. This - from a cyber security point of view anything that isnt recieving regular updates any more is a no go as it just drastically increased the chance of you being the next hacked school in the newspapers. That argument should be enough.
  13. Maybe they should redirect some of the approx 3 million they spend on just their CEO every year into IT - that might sort some problems out!
  14. Authenticator on phone/tablet seems to be the quickest and easiest. Most of us, inclyding teachers have all been using multifactor in one way or another for like 10 years so theres no excuse not to use it now.
  15. Your kinda ranting at the wrong people here, we're all your side and in your position!
  16. How many schools actually have a standby line with a seperate cable route from a different exchange? None of the ones round here do that's for sure! When the digger does it's diggin in the wrong place somewhere that's your cloudn school closed for a day or two.
  17. LAs are totally risk averse. They are most certainly not going to rick getting sued.
  18. You can probably script it but I just spend 10 seconds typing in the PC name at the start of the build proces and then off it goes.
  19. Will look int that, thanks!
  20. Basically When you PXE boot you set a DNS entry in your AD DHCP to tell it whichserver to point to - it then PXE boots from that server a Windows PE image from WDS (this image is generated by MDT). This allows a boot with network drivers etc, which then copies the full O/S image from the MDT server and presents you with a friendly interface you can set the workstation name tick boxes for which apps you want etc. This then reboots into the actual copy of Windows on the PC's SSD and then proceeds to finish installing itself. So you'ge gotta use MDT (provides the final windows image including all apps settings and drivers) and WDS (provides the initial boot image / think windows bootable USB drive image). There's loads of youtube videos on setting it all up you can have it done in a day.
  21. Interesting. So if someone steals the camera they get the footage? Is it encrypted on the storage drive in the camera?
  22. Us using MDT to the bitter end
  23. I don't really get your point. What I said was a longer retention period literally saved members of staffs jobs livelyhoods etc because the email trail showed they had done nothing unprofessional. I dont really see how that could ever be considered a bad thing no matter the quality of the staff - fair is fair and no one should lose their job becuse data has been wiped because of someones obsession with making SARs easier/less frequent. I dont really see how anyone could come to the conlusion that a a 12 month retention is acceptible for professional communication method that contains everything the school does (and may have to prove it's done) from daily comms to teaching to safeguarding to behaviour, to finance, to legal. Thats all I am saying! It wasnt a dig at a strategy for firing staff just genuine confusion/disagreement
  24. How can they justify £100 for a piece of crap plastic £20 max remote control??
  25. Lets hope your place doesnt think like that when it comes to your disciplinery!
