  1. @SteveHill With the latest switch ingress from Meraki you should be able to effectively block VPN applications from running via layer 7 application management tools which would shape the traffic before it actually reaches your proxy server would it not? I don't have Meraki switches as such but have researched their capabilities within the LAN and also the WAN regarding BOYD.... https://meraki.cisco.com/solutions/mobile-device-management https://meraki.cisco.com/technologies/layer-7-visibility Surely this would be the way forward to prevent the use of VPN's on the networks? Or am I totally off the mark here?
  2. We purchased ours approximately 18 months ago for £14 per device so must have gone up since then.....worth every penny though....much cheaper than IPads and easier to manage...
  3. This is the very reason why in America the largest single deployment of IPads in the world was scrapped because within 30 secs of use the students had found a way round the security measures which had been put in place using VPN's.... they all now have been issued with chromebooks and all seems well with the deployment... Unfortunately this does not help your situation as a large number of devices are BYOD.... there in lies your problem...until you can effectively manage these devices then i would say the only thing left open to you is to change your infrastructure to be able to manage which apps have access to the network via layer 3 application blocking, Meraki switches would help in this situation as the rules you could apply to all switches would not allow the running of these VPN's fullstop! Expensive....but only other option is as @ozydave states "Bin the use of IPads" instead of BYOD make it CYOD and give the students a choice of devices they can use which you can control.....
  4. @jhothersall Deletion of checkpoints is just the same as merge.....depending on how many checkpoints you have it could take sometime to merge also... Found this: https://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/how-to-create-and-delete-checkpoints-snapshots/

    GoTo Training

@David44 These accounts are set up with local admin rights but when finished with are locked or disabled until booked again, as for the software it is run by my technicians once a month on these accounts and updated as and when required..... You can give access to exams software to any of these accounts so they would be able to run the software without running on her account and any files she requires can be uploaded prior to the training by you or your technicians to the specific training account and then deleted after or transferred back to her account. End users always make things difficult as they think only of themselves in matters like this as they can do what they want when they at home regardless of the consequence.....don't understand why she requires two screens or two computers to watch some training basically....it has all the necessary viewing screens on the GoTo application...we've never been asked to provide double screens for training purposes yet....we've been using this GoTo training for a couple of years now.. no complaints so far..good luck

@David44 We setup a number of accounts specifically for this which we have already used and installed the software for which staff members are allowed access to in a controlled manner...i.e. they have to book these accounts in advance and also they can only be used in our conference rooms, we have found this to work very well and SLT were impressed with the speed in which we sorted the problem and kept the network security to a maximum...... Hope this helps
  7. @Garacesh Its called will power.....you don't need to eat every second of the day or night....that's why we becoming a nation of Fatties!!! Hate to say that word but its true and its because we are being groomed into eating that crap!! It doesn't have a place in any of my thinking...but then who am I.....just someone who is sick to death of paying hard earned cash to support the NHS who have to deal with a crisis of Fat unhealthy people who chose to over eat and eat fast food crap their entire life as it becomes an addiction and purely out of being too damn lazy to cook fresh food which only takes minutes....when as you say fast food is not just that....people queue for 10...20....30...minutes at all these fast food places...so you either control your intake and build up your resistance to eating at all times of the day and night or you become addicted to fast food its that simple....its been documented all over the place that fast food is killing people stealthily....not my place to tell people how to eat.....just my opinion.....just saying like....not wishing to upset anyone.....
  8. We are using this as of Summer https://classflow.com/en-gb/ Its free....you can import your Promethean files into it as powerpoint ones...great stuff Hope you will find it to your liking
  9. All I can say is all the fast food industry is crap! Don't eat any of that sh*t.....not healthy and deffo not hygenic handled....no wonder we have a fat people crisis in the UK....just like America we becoming FAT and lazy...no one cooks anymore....kids think chickens actually come from the supermarket as with many other products....shocking really...brought my children up to be totally independent of fast food and they adhere to this as they both cook very well and wouldn't entertain rubbish food such as the large franchises peddle.... No cure for laziness......but then maybe I'm just an old fuddy duddy?..........Very fit and healthy one though!!!
  10. I was only asking as you seemed to be quite in the know and quite quick to jump on anyone who claimed they had problems and had an opinion on the matter....quite anxious if i may say... Again with what you have said, it is contrary to how it comes across, quite obnoxious and downright rude when other professionals are just trying to put their point across don't you think.....I'm just saying like... In your opinion they may seem to you like broad statements but why should anyone have to supply evidence every time they post something which is just their opinion?.....see what I am getting at?..... I do really understand this but its not the questions its the way in which it came across that makes it look like you are (Don't take this the wrong way please) Mr angry.....your probably a very nice guy but obviously frustrated with other professionals on here......we not on here to pull each other to pieces are we? That was not my intention at all....but it does seem that I have a valid point above in that you feel you have to justify yourself to me......you don't and i have in no way asked for justification in any way shape or form.....I'm just being nice to someone on here as a fellow professional who may be a little bent out of shape and feels like he needs to vent his spleen with others on this forum.....(I really don't mind if that's how you feel but I'm looking at this purely logically) Have a good day my friend
  11. @Edu-IT Do you have any theories or Intel on why this keeps happening? Would be good to have your input as your so keen to support SB? Can't be just one piece of hardware that's caused the multiple issues Iv'e read on here today surely not? We don't use them of course....they did want to come in and sell their wares to us but our school wasn't interested as we have had a faultless Internet supply for the past 5 years.....100% uptime although only 99.99% guaranteed in their SLA with valid KPI's.....just saying like
  12. +1 for WinSCP just does what you need to access files but one thing you might meet up with is file permissions on the linux box and then that's where you will need to access the linux box directly so you can change permissions to the particular file that requires changing, plenty of help on here though if required just ask...
  13. @DalekSec Each to there own......We bought an IMac at quite a considerable cost to the school for a colleague who deemed it necessary to have the best so he told us...lovely shiny silver all in one unit......he left us after a year for another position....cut a long story short......he has been gone 4 years now and we still have the IMac in our office....never been used since the day he left....sorry but you will never convince me that Apple make a product which is both cost effective and can be used for something that any normal everyday PC can do just as well.... Ooh! just to add it used to overheat terribly such was the design.....one large vent across the back....absolute rubbish for the price....waste of money. Not my decision to purchase....business manager.....it is a legacy which we look upon as its in our office and it reminds us on a daily basis......how not to waste good money especially taxpayers!
  14. PMSL.....sorry but did you actually think this out? Not meaning to be offensive to you at all its just against the grain....
  15. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GfOlP8FKt0
  16. I think its time for people to wake up and smell the coffee and look at alternatives to Apple products fullstop! They always seem to be making changes without consultation or regard to the end user for whatever hardware and software they have developed (If they developed it and not a third party) They rely totally on their fanbase for the main profit making products...never understood people and why they feel that to pay over the odds for equipment then it must be the best.....sorry folks but that's a little thin now. So pleased we never went down that route of IPad mania as a school and so please we waited and took up with GSuite and Chromebooks....so much better and more cost effective....Bye Bye Apple we not want you!! Just my opinion and just saying like! not wishing to offend any Apple users........Wake Up! its a brand new world out there!!!
  17. @elsiegee40 Time to go Android and ditch the Apple millstone around your neck...me thinks! So many good Android phones out there at a third of the price which do so much more....one day people will get it! When is the next IOS update? Hmm! might have to change your battery again when that comes around....hehe! All the very best @elsiegee40
  18. Absolutely...totally agree Its a common sense approach me feels........unfortunately its not something some people have nowadays especially in the educational field....shame really as these are the very professionals deemed fit to teach our children....nuff said!
  19. We have 48 laserjet desktop printers in a school with 800 students plus 4 MFDs way too many desktop printers!!!.... we will be going with a managed MFD system after our schools rebuild in 2 years time.....Only a couple of offices will have printers. We use Papercut to restrict staff and students printing so not too much is printed and the budget is fairly rigid so very cost effective... we looking to run around 8 MFDs around the new school with biometric authentication....1 week to pick your work up or else its deleted automatically.......sweet, no piles of printed work left around the school.
  20. @AJWhite1970 Iv'e always used these as they are very good units and cover every format.....AdderView Not Cheap mind you but worth every penny...
  21. @nicholab Why waste money when the Meraki units and software are so good.....are you changing your switches too with the new build? If so then its a no brainer!.................Meraki all the way for me................such intuitive systems and software to match no wonder Cisco bought them out....
  22. We have been given no options at all by KIA, their IT consultants have already told us what we are to have, I wanted the new infrastructure to combine with the wireless and told them I would prefer Meraki switches and Wireless APs as then this would present in one window for administration only to be told you are to have HP switches and Ruckus wireless system...... I'm totally p*ss*d off with this as i see this as a backwards step for our school but the EFA don't see it this way as its all down to costs and as they are the clients they seem to be satisfied with this which is a nightmare.... So pleased I'm looking at early retirement for when the new school is finally built.....
  23. We use XMA and have been for the past 6 years... they provide us with large boxes which we fill with used toner cartridges and then we ring them up or send them an e-mail to say when they require picking up...simple really XMA also sell toners...originals and compatibles at the best prices Iv'e seen... just saying like not touting for business...one solution to everything toners.
  24. @danrhodes Its not an IT issue...management should enforce a policy of out of hours emailing with their staff...It is up to the staff members to adhere to this policy and therefore its a management issue!! Repeat...."A management issue!" not an IT one full stop!.....! This is what we do here and it works just fine....!
  25. @Koldov Came across this: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2013487-what-size-disk-space-to-allocate-to-a-wsus-server-for-ms-updates Thought of you, might be worth a read for nowt? Merry Christmas
