@TwistedHelixis Why don't you go fully Chromebooks for staff and Students?... Are there legacy applications that you use only on Microsoft OS?.... You could build all your laptops and desktops to Chrome OS if they are up to it and just use your Smoothwall for DNS as you wouldn't require DHCP as the Chrome OS would authenticate with the licenses through the GSuite Admin Console.....as long as they are registered with the license... Its the way we are going eventually when we get rid of the legacy applications that require Microsoft OS to function.... Just a thought.....

Capita and the local support LA's are making changes to the teacher app as Microsoft are retiring their support for the access control services (ACS) so there is an impact on teacher app and any other software company using this protocol....apparently from the 7th November 2018 anyone using ACS will have services failing.... Don't kow if this is what is happening in the background to the services now and has had an impact but they are supposed to be working in the background to keep the services running after the support has been retired by Microsoft.... That's all I know folks....

Hi All.... Just want to give a big up to Craig Fearnside from Smoothwall....who made the migration for us to a new S10 unit a doddle...just wanted to say a huge thank you.... External temp here currently 26 Degrees Celsius and rising..... That's here in the North East of UK..... Sun shining bright... Reminds me of 1976 the year I left school after having spent an extra year due to the change in leaving age.... Virtually 6 glorious weeks of Sunshine...... Beautiful.... Love it as there are no hosepipe bans up here..... Have to transport 200 litres per evening to my allotment though as there is no water there so pretty pleased I'm not on a water meter hehe! Well Happy!!!

@JRA I actually had this written up to post but got called away before I had chance to submit..... Apologies as it would have saved you getting wrong for using the CLI as Synology don't like that you have undermined their DSM system which is all you require to check your systems... Alls well that ends well though....

We use both here Enterprise versions....been using it for quite a number of years in fact I think I posted on here about it many times...great piece of kit... Cheap as chips for what you get also.....

We have to allow students access to travel sites as its part of our geography curriculum..... To this date we have not had any issues..... It is felt that learning life skills is paramount to our students development and being able to plan and book a holiday and learn about the places of interest broadens our students horizons... Its not my decision to make either as its down to the SLT.....

My point was not about reducing your bill or being frugal with water usage it was the point that a large family would be better off without a meter therefore allowing them to use as much water as they wanted.... therefore bringing the actual cost per unit down for themselves long term....a kind of tipping point. OMG! you actually agree with something I've said blimey must have caught you on a good day!!

I agree to a certain extent that metered for a small household will be inherently cheaper as they would be able to control their usage far better but for a larger family it would be more beneficial for them not to have a metered water supply for the larger amount of water they would use and not be in total control of. Yes I agree with you again that those people on an un-metered water supply will obviously be paying more per unit on average but if they are using 5 times more water than a metered household on a metered supply then the average cost actually comes down on the amount of usage per unit if you get my drift. Agreed your economics works great if your a small household and are very frugal with your water usage but there are those larger households that use a larger amount of water and it would not be economical for them to be metered as they wouldn't be able to control the amount of water that they would use on average therefore they are better off financially. As for my POV that companies are there to shaft the public I too am not naive in giving them the benefit of the doubt as it is always in the companies best interests to make a profit and this will always come down to the detriment of its customers and workforce..... With most of the utility companies its never going to become their forte to drop prices as in any other service to the public because there are shareholders interests to uphold and they come first...also it has become increasingly clear that most of these companies are not in competition with each other but regularly fix prices for their own benefit.... I would dare any company to drop their prices before any other and by a large amount to see if the others followed suit and see how many would because they already know they have a good share of the public in that area where they provide water to and therefore would never entertain dropping their prices.... I've been paying household bills for 44years now and have a good handle on how we in this country get ripped off by greedy companies and now its only going to get worse as the worlds resources are depleted so those companies who provide a product which is necessary to sustain life will be forever in business and always make a profit. The fact that we have sold ours off to foreign investors is even worse as we are propping up their countries economics instead of our own.... We seriously need to take back control of our utilities before it is too late....

The point is that if everybody would pay more per unit even if everybody was on a water meter.... The price per unit never comes down is what I'm saying even if we were all very conscientious about our water usage... If company is pumping 1 million gallons a week and have no leaks and the consumers are using all of this then they get paid for 1 million units of water say... If everyone was on a metered supply and suddenly decided to be extra extra frugal with their water usage that 1 million units of water would decrease to whatever so the company would lose money...the investors would have no bonuses and people would lose their jobs...(Hypothetically speaking).... Its in the companies best interest to provide as much water as they can to the consumers so that they make a profit..... So if they only pump 2/3rds of that 1 million units they have to up their unit price to make up the deficit....simple So they make out that its cheaper to be metered when in reality its not.... we all pay the same rate for our water units except those on a metered connection have to be frugal with their usage otherwise they end up paying more whereas those people who are on a rateable monthly payment can use as much water as they like and therefore relatively speaking actually pay less for their water if they use it rather generously.... Long winded but you get the picture.....

But there is because those companies who fix the leaks spend lots of capital in doing so and therefore have to recoup from the consumer by putting prices up per unit.... The companies who don't fix leaks still put up their unit charge slightly below the other companies and therefore make more profit but because they push water meters also they can conserve their supplies but still maintain the profit margin... Absolute no brainer..... What these foreign investors want is profit above all else and as the Government could at any time bring these utilities back into public ownership at anytime they want it as quick as they can get it..... Definitely no fault in that logic..... So no matter how careful we are with our water or any other utility we the consumers will always pay through the nose for it..... Answer this then: If we all saved as much water ....electricity.... Gas and fuels as we could muster do you think for one moment the companies would bring the cost per unit down? I think you will find the answer to this on every account would be.......NO!!! Rest my case.....

To regulate peoples water usage as they cannot meet demand whilst increasing the unit price therefore still maintaining a profit and not having to fix leaking mains or invest in infrastructure..... Its a no brainer really.....commonsense.... Southern water companies are always moaning about water shortages but never fix the real issues as they would rather increase the cost per unit of the actual product than fix the infrastructure to make the cost lower to the consumer by streamlining the process.... This is dictated by the shareholders requirements for large returns for their investment and as I have stated already most of the utility companies in this country are owned by foreign investors so the profit is going to other countries who benefit from cheaper utilities off our backs.... Simple really...

So tell me again why people think water meters are a good thing........? As I have already stated in my previous post if everyone was on a water meter and careful with the amount of water usage then the water companies would lose out as they need to make a profit for their shareholders..... Most of these utility companies are owned by foreign investors so the profit goes out of our country into their pockets so the only way these companies can make a profit is to keep putting up the cost per unit although not re-investing in the infrastructure...... This goes for other utilities also.....Electricity....Gas....etc So again tell me why people think its a good thing to have one?.....
