I really cannot for the life of me understand why people still purchase brand new computers with only 1 years RTB warranty when there are perfectly good refurbished units to be had at a fraction of the cost with 2 or 3 RTB warranties for peanuts..... I won't name the company we use on here as it could be classed as advertising but they hail from Lancashire..... Alright Dave?......

I have an allotment which doesn't have connected water and I currently have to carry over 100 litres of water every evening via 4 x 25 litre containers...we don't have a water meter and i'm thankful for that as our rateable water is only £120 per year....I fancy it would be quite a lot more expensive if we did.... Water like every other service is constantly rising in price per unit but they never seem to bring the price down... people would probably be less suspicious of smart meters if prices came down per unit...but I fear the more people that convert to smart metering to save money the more the companies will put up the unit cost as people use less.......utility companies still have to make a profit for their shareholders and this cannot be obtained if the customer is using less of the commodity....commonsense really...

Yes a few have but there are still many of the big players who are still utilising Xenserver for the moment.....KVM was designed after Xen which was always going to be but that is progress.... @jmak Don't trust to luck....buy the drive as soon as possible and get it installed asap.... Safe not sorry... Had a SAN a few years back that threw up a degenerating disk I was lucky as I had a replacement...installed it straight away and the RAID5 rebuilt after a few hours...good job as we had another of the drives fail the very next day..... So lucky or good practice..... Don't wait .....do it!!!

@localzuk Been using Broadcom Nics in our servers for years and had no problems once we found out that some of the licensed Nics had changed hands and QLogic had produced their own drivers...once these were installed from the start we've never experienced any problems.....I've had other people argue the contrary to yours in that they have experienced more problems with VMware than Hyper-V but to be totally honest with you I much prefer Xenserver Hypervisor to either of them......Its what the major players use....I had no problems at all but because of JRE had to move to Hyper-V because our LA couldn't support Xenserver as I had my jobspec changed I couldn't either so that was that..... You pays your money and you takes your choice......or in fact you don't as Xenserver is free totally except for support which you can purchase at a reasonable cost per annum...How much does VMware cost?......OOh! expensive we found.....we don't have the luxury being such a poor school from the North....

Moved away from SANs years ago when I found Synology giving me the same IOPs and connectivity with their NAS top end units at a fraction of the cost.... Total failover with 3 Dell R710 hosts and 2 synced Synology units with 2 current GIG switches and all having redundant power units... a third Synology unit for Veeam VM backup and then up to the cloud from that Synology unit with their own app inbuilt on the unit... My first SAN cost £30k then had to purchase the servers and the switches.... No failover as such except for RAID5 total cost approx £50k at that time... Latest setup with Synology using SSDs as the caching end and WD Reds 8TB drives for storage total cost.....£18k .......3 years ago this was...probably even cheaper now and they all have multiple 10GB nics as standard and all come with 5 years warrant and support..... No Brainer really.....well it was for me....been so good for the past 3 years as was the one before that for 5 years.....not a bad return for your money...

@synaesthesia If a staff member has access to the right tools then he/she shouldn't need for us to be looking at a big picture...we should be focused on the network issues we have and the hardware and software too.... Let the Staff who teach the students do their jobs as I have found in the past Teachers are very touchy about other staff pointing out that they are not doing their jobs by spying on their lessons via what the students are up to..... How do we know what the teacher has agreed with the students in his/her class whilst accessing computers and the internet.....it is up to them to tell us which sites they feel are appropriate and which ones are not don't you think?.... I feel too many of us Tech people poke our noses in where they are sometimes not required by the teaching staff..... My motto is "wait until I am asked by the staff member on website access issues..." if they ask for it to be blocked or unblocked it is totally their call not mine....If i have any reservations then I take it to the head of ICT and they deal with it leaving me free to carry on with my work....

@kennysarmy Its a classroom management issue not a technical one.... We allow one game website so that the staff can allow the students time before the end of the lesson to play on it.... If the staff don't want to allow the students access they can block it themselves using the tools provided before the lesson begins....it is in their court....they also have the rights to view the workstations in their group so that they can make judgements based on what they actually see.... I re-iterate it is not our duty to monitor students just to support staff in aiding them to manage their classroom with the tools we provide...

We have both electronic (At login) before they can access the network and a paper based one which we keep on file that they have to sign before they're issued with an account....

We actually encourage good behaviour and work with the Teaching staff able to allow certain time on one particular games site which other Staff can block if they so wish... Its classroom management problem and not ours but we do try to limit the games websites so that it makes it that little bit easier for the teaching staff to control through their IT classroom management tools... Used as a carrot to encourage good standards from the students....

@nispire Seems like search terms are the only way of blocking it atm..... I have various shades of the word "snake" in search terms and this seems to be easier than finding out the sub server listings using wireshark.... How many variations of the word "snake" can you make up?

Yeah....we have a couple of HD cameras that default to .avi and .wmv....rip and zip.... Staff have been informed that if they use IPads (we don't have that many) then we cannot guarantee that the exam board will be able to view them so and therefore the students exam piece maybe void and it is their best interest to use the dedicated cameras....this works very well for us.... We actually had one member of staff who wanted to use their own personal IPhone.........SLT quickly disparaged this activity in the most strictest form they could and relayed this message to all members of staff... Our staff my not be the most IT literate but they do know right from wrong and they are easily informed and once informed they stay informed....

Actually very little compared to the time we would actively spend showing the staff how to do it year on year hehe! I have 2 technicians in my team...they take care of all 1st and 2nd line stuff....

@rf600 Just as @3s-gtech has stated...... Also for future reference sync your phone to your google account so you have all your apps...photos and contacts backed up to the cloud...always a good thing as you never know when this kind of incident will happen...

We are currently looking to be going 1:1 Chromebooks after our new school rebuild...also looking at Chrome OS for all our old devices so that we can ditch Microsoft eventually...... As for IPads they are so 1980s if you get my drift....didn't work well in America in an educational environment which eventually went full Chromebook and GSuite and the guy in charge was investigated for fraud so I am led to believe..... Chromebooks and GSuite unfortunately the way to go in my honest opinion as even today O365 has been yet again found wanting within its core... Its beginning to look like a one horse race at this point in time with the other 2 main contenders falling back at every fence..... Just saying like..... I'm no expert......
