The obvious answer is XP! We started with Education and are slowing moving to LTSB. We haven't had any real problems, although users still question why the interface is such rubbish, even though we upgraded 2 years ago. I think their main criticism is actually to do with Office 2013 and it's terrible file navigation.

A bit OT, but I remember when the BGFL blocked the image search on google.co.uk and google.com, because too many students where typing in "porn" to look at the nudie-rudies. The BGFL forgot that you type in google.fr/images google.de/images etc etc and search for images. Surprisingly here, we don't have safe search enabled. I don't know why. AFAIK, as part of JANET we get unfiltered internet and it's up to us to filter it, which of course, we do, so you can't get to anything that you shouldn't. (This is a bit annoying, because I can't see what the very good wine shop in the high street has on offer, unless I go in. ) At the last school we did have safe search enabled and leaving it to google is probably the best thing to do.

Under Site administration > Plugins > Enrolments > Self enrolment you can enable self enrollment for new courses but I don't think you can enable self enroll in bulk for existing courses. AFAIK you have to go though each existing course and enable it.

Move to Australia - every chip shop will cook you a burger or steak sandwich. You'll get freshly cooked chips too rather than like here in Blighty where they've been sitting for god knows how long. You can also go into almost any deli and buy a hot pie, pastie or sausage roll. These aren't microwaved either.

Etiquette was mainly switching it off when in a class room full of students; this was to prevent them from hearing "Senior management to room x". We in IT also had our own codes, derived from knowing the routine. So if I asked for the location of the other techie and he "checking the bins", I knew he was on a ciggie break and "Upper or lower?" asked which equipment the other person was setting up or packing away.

I've got something like 100 hours of Tony Hancock recorded on cassette, which I listen to quite regularly. I spent most of my teen years building the collection, recording Hancock's off the radio and swapping recordings with other collectors around the world. It gave me great pleasure to do it. A few years ago, a friend gave me three CDs with them all coverted to MP3 - all cleaned up, so none of those pops and whistles. I never listen to these - it's all too easy to get a complete collection. He is in Australia (where I'm from and where I recorded most of my episodes) and he got the cleaned up copies from somebody in the UK. I listened to one especially rare episode and the cleaned up copy has little dropouts which coincide with those on my cassette copy. It appears as though the episode has come home, probably via several other collectors and no doubt several different formats.

Crusts are the best - end of! I've often wished they sold loaves of crusts. When my Dad was still with us, it was always a contest as to who got the crust. No opening the loaf at the other end either!
