+1 Papercut. The only real way that you can reduce printing is to remove as many printers as you can, and site the remaining ones well away from offices. Make it so that office staff have to walk to collect a print and printing will be reduced.

The transactions would come from the merchants via X.25, be passed to the IBM campus in Warwick via SNA, come back on SNA and be posted to the merchant on X.25. I asked an IBM engineer what would happen if the IBM campus (that's where all the UK bank clearing houses lived) was down. The transaction would go back to the merchant as authorised and the bank would sort it out later. The merchant didn't want to miss out on the sale and surprisingly few transactions were unauthorised.

Our students finished last Thursday and the teachers last Friday, although a few teachers have been sneaking in. The teachers are dodging contractors who are fitting new furry strips around doors, cabling new fire alarms, fitting carpets, etc. Teachers are also dodging us in IT - we're re-stickering equipment with our new improved asset tags. We finish tomorrow and we've been told we can leave at 16:30, which is normal quitting time. Anyway, to all edugeekers - Merry Christmas!

It has been my experience that the file is OK and office has spat the dummy. When it has happened to me, the solution has been to open the file in OpenOffice, change something and save it. Once I've done this, M$ Office is will open the file. It goes without saying that what worked for me might not work for you.

London Midland were handing out slices of cake at Stourbridge Junction last night, as a thank you for traveling with them, and as an apology for major disruption a few weeks ago. Nice cake but it doesn't solve their constant late running.

What they recommend and what you get might be two different things. When we changed companies and our miss mash of HPs were replaced with Lexmarks, we ended up with CS748s. These are colour printers but Paper Cut forces black and white. The new company bought a job lot and basically dumped them on us. To be fair, they are quite good printers but somethings urks me that they aren't true black and white. This also causes us some problems with staff : Teacher: "There is a colour printer in our office but I have to send colour jobs to the resources room." We in IT: "The printer in your office is black and white." Teacher: "No it isn't, there are colour cartridges in it." Trialing a printer is a good idea but make sure it's a realistic trial. I'd suggest a minimum of a month during term time.

We have a Sharp MX6240 Colour and a Sharp MX2614 Colour which are OK. The 14 is the smaller version of the 40. The only problem with the 40 is that there is one particular paper jam which requires an engineer to deal with, but it's only happened once. Easy to fit supplies and seems robust (we've had it 18 months). We also have a Ricoh Pro C5100s Colour which we say is pants, although (according to our printer company) works well in other schools. We can only get it to print from the bypass tray in landscape, seems to eat supplies like they are going out of style and takes forever to print. All of our printers use PaperCut. The Ricoh is used by the Macs but we didn't have much success getting the Macs to talk to the M$ print server. The Macs could see the printer but often jobs wouldn't print. We've had more success controlling it from the teachers Mac, which means we can't account for it using PaperCut. While not ideal, the graphics teacher doesn't jump up and down as much saying the printer isn't printing, so we are happy(ish).

We had a tub given to us and indeed the toffee ones were the last to go, with the pennys hanging around to the end.

I heard somebody at the station today say "The one thing that you can rely on with London Midland is that the train will be late" and I thought how true. While no where near as bad as Southern, I don't know why LM publish a timetable. The trains are usually 5 minutes late, which is enough to miss the connection. On the Stourbridge line, there are three stations Lye, Old Hill and Langley Green, where only every other train stops and when they cancel a train, it is always the one that stops at every station. When this happens, you are delayed by 30 minutes. I think the answer to the railway malaise is simple : Renationalise the railway - private operators are really only interested in profit Proper investment in the network - more money = better infrastructure = more efficient network Fully automatic trains - much easier to implement than driverless cars, and the technology is largely proven Obviously this isn't going to happen.

They are doing random streets where I live. They've done the road that mine runs off (but not mine), the car park for the park (but not the road that leads to the park), the platforms at the railway station (but not the station car park) and other random roads. There are two street lights which have been out for about a month on station road, which I reported to the council. They haven't replaced them - thought that would be a good opportunity for a swap out, but apparently no - they would rather we grope our way from the station in the dark.
