Papercut is only part of the answer. You need a strong SLT too. We have Papercut here and staff have £10 (1000 sheets) per term. When they run out, we've been instructed just to give them another £10 'cus SLT can't be bothered to deal with it. Ideally the users should be made to plead their case as to why they've exceeded 1000 sheets and explain why bulk printing wasn't done through the resources department. The only way to really reduce printing is to remove printers. I reckon we only need two, one at the north end of the campus and the other at the south end. If you work in the southern buildings, your printer will be the one at the north end, and vv. I guarantee that this would reduce printing. Another option (less draconian) would be to enforce "follow me", but they didn't want to do that. They reckon somebody will see confidential prints, even if the user has to physically attend the printer to print the documents. Go figure!

Correct! On the back of IBM SCSI devices was a rotary dip switch to set the channel number. You could turn it with a pair of pliers, which is what we used.

This might be a bit obscure - think of the numbers 0 - 15. The actual size is 55mm x 8mm diam. We were issued with them but I never knew anybody who actually used one.

At the first school I was fine to drive the minibus, but I wasn't allowed to carry students - something to do with insurance. We used it to get new or dispose of old IT kit. It was OK to drive apart from the digital clutch.

I used to ride all the time (never had a car) and my waterproofs never leaked. It was quite funny - the boss would turn up to a meeting with his professional leather briefcase and I would turn up with a Tescos bag - did the same job - it kept my papers together. I wouldn't recommend a small bike - you need something with road presence. I used to have a Honda 50 Cub, a Yamaha SR500 with the worlds loudest exhaust, a Ducati 900 SSD and a Yamaha TX500 with sidecar. On the Honda - no respect on the road, on the chair - cars would pull over and give me all the room I wanted. Now I get to work on the train, and drive a car on weekends. A small car would be the go I reckon. Something like a Smart Car. Almost as easy to park as a bike and you won't get wet when it rains.

At the mo, we do our MFL listening exams using CDs. However the principal has insisted that we go high tech and use MP3 players. The problem we have is finding an MP3 player without FM radio. They collected their user ids and passwords on enrolment day and although they were encourage to go and login on a computer and change their password, many didn't. They were given instructions on how to setup their college email on their phones and various emails where sent to their college email address between enrolment and first day of teaching. We had loads of calls about students not being able to read these emails, so we had to disable change at first login, as they can't do that on their email client.

We've had a lot of problems with old peripherals, which used to work just under W7 but refuse to work under W10. Included are Vidifox i3130 visualisers, Fujitsu ScanSnap s500, some Smartboards (can't remember models) and the Fluke PAT tester. It looks as though it's going to be an expensive summer if they want to replace all of these devices, with new versions which can be made to work. Some will have to be replaced. We started off with Education, but we've moved to LTSB.

My degree used to hang on the wall in Mom's house - she was far more proud of it than me. I say used to; some years ago I decided I'd better have it and saw there was a photo in the frame in place of my degree. She said that it was in a safe place and she'd dig it out. A few years later she decided that she must have chucked it out with a load of papers that she didn't need any longer. I can't get a replacement as my university doesn't exist any more. Since I graduated in 1979 it probably doesn't matter much now. So one thing you can do with your degree is keep it in a safe place.

Ah but his latest effort shows that it is possible to screen films publicly, which have not been passed by the BBFC. In other words, the BBFC is a complete waste of money - films would be cheaper to see without it. You can read and see what ever you want in print or on stage but not film or TV (and soon the internet).

We've got a Fujitsu ScanSnap s500 in finance - old but still going. Extremely robust and simple to operate. The only downside is I haven't been able to get it to work with W10. I found this out a couple of days ago. Our junior decided to go from Win7 to W10 on the computer it was attached to, and when he found out the scanner wouldnt' work, he decided the best thing to do was disconnect the scanner and stuff it in a drawer. After about an hour of failing to get the scanner to work, I went back to Win7 and it's all fine.
