does the proxy thing work for networked connections too? I tried that but to me it seemed it was wireless configuration only... then we didn't have a proxy anymore so i gave up worrying.

Don't know how helpful this is as its been a while since we removed Chrome from the network but Policy Templates - The Chromium Projects has ADMX Group policy templates for Chrome and am sure you can set the proxy on them independently from IE.

Hi all, Looks like I have the cash for a full server hardware refresh in the next year and am looking for opinions / experiences with hardware vendors but especially HP and Stone. We currently have Dell hardware and find their pro support very good indeed and seem to come good on the price in the past. Saying that I need the standard 3+ quotes and was going to include a local company who do most the network things I cant do who favour HP and was thinking Stone as well. Im quite a hardware snob on the whole and feel conflicted about Stone servers. I use their desktops and love them but servers? To me its a bit like shopping in asda where I know deep down its the same thing im buying at a little less, but would hide the carrier bags from the neighbours (couldn't put the phone down quick enough when some vendor offered me zoostorm once). Anyone happy with stone servers? Thanks in advance for any opinions (except anyone who says RM. Those who would willingly give them cash need their fingers amputated)

I ordered 7 and got the basic response. Not great really as the end of the financial year is about to hit so need to spend the cash now or start the new year in debt. Im going on twitter later on the hassle them.

I predict this thread gets to 5 pages long and death threats are involved Anyway Windows 8 on a desktop is just fine. The scroll on the mouse makes navigating the start screen an ease and your find your little finger starts to rest on the windows key after a week of use. After a while you will start to wonder how you lived without the search feature and the rest is pretty much the same as it ever way. Just have a play and don't let the people stuck in the 90's put you off.

Kitted the school out with 65 Casio's recently. Wireless projection and a 5 year warranty (including light source). Really working perfectly.

My home PC's SSD must be coming upto 4 years now and still working perfectly. At work we have some coming upto the 2 year mark and all is well. We use Stone here so have a 5 year warranty anyway. The way I see it is a network machine is not going to have much to write to it after the initial build and a few updates so its great for industry.

one word of caution is to check what i3 each vendor offers. I found stone offer the most upto date version and Viglen were pushing older ones to make the quotes look good but sure there are many happy viglen customers out there.

Would you all think its fine to upgrade 2 DC's to 2012 from 2008R2 as just an upgrade 1 after another? I have never upgraded a DC before and after the domain and forest prep it seems fairly straight forward. A guide I see makes it seem quite straight forward but a couple of the guides I see include adding a 3rd, temporary DC to the mix and then demoting it afterwards but I would just rather upgrade the 2 in place servers. I assume the 3rd is to keep replication up during the process in a production environment but with the summer holidays coming up I can afford to have 1 DC out of action for a hour or so. Just ran a test lab with a new DC and it went well and plan on running a test on a sandboxed DC from my network when I get back to work. Also just trying to figure my backup strategy. If I take a backup (I use Veeam but will also take a VMware snapshot), and things do go wrong, is it ok to take the upgraded one offline then restore the snapshot? I understand it that although not preferred, replication should sort its self out and it will be ok. Would love to hear from an experienced head please.

maybe late to the party but Stone all the way here. I like the look of Dell stuff but really have a problem getting a hold of decent quotes. My Dell education guy just puts me onto a reseller I don't really like. Anyway chat to stone.

Is there a real network version of Cubase or is the OP just streaming it across a share? Cubase is a pain to sort out but never heard of an issue like this but I use local installs and users save to their standard network area.

Its really a case of searching the windows store for "remote". PC Remote windows looks like it will do the job. Also maybe you could use a logmein account and use IE rather than an app?

I don't mean to contradict (really really don't want to) but a mac mini server can manage preferences with ease. Just ensure they run the enrolment profile and then you can add them to groups all day long and the last iMacs I ordered from Stone took 2 days. Don't get me wrong, I don't support iMacs at all but if you have to do it, its really not very hard.

im running kodu on some very old RM 2020's and its okish but working. Only 21 days until I throw the lot away though

You may want to factor some external storage as allowing them to save locally to the machines is a pain over time when they loose stuff and its not backed up. I got a £400 Thunderbolt 4TB thing along with the students standard storage (talks easily). for 20 your looking at a getting, a figure of £18,000 ish minus Art software (talk to a vendor like stone but use apple store for guide) Also... cant resist but to tip fuel on the situation but to point out for the cost of 3-4 iMacs, you can pay for a site licence of Serif

Is there such a piece of software which can tell me how often a machine on a network is logged into over a period of time? I know things like impero do it but I just want a stand alone solution which will tell me if my staff are using the stations we spend thousands on because the old ones were "too slow to use".

feel exactly the same as you. Not put email over to google just yet but can see it happening next year. Why the hell are we maintaining ever clumsy software packages when someone else will do it for you cheaply. Im going cloud crazy from now on.

also to add, bottom line is macs have a very nice auto script making package built in. You can command what you want to happen and it makes a script for you to run on startup. A year ago I was in your exact same position and have found there are a lot of plus points to mac ownership but just don't believe that "it just works" thing. Yes it does a lot of the time but when it decides to, things go down bigtime.

an i7 mac mini with upgraded ram will do what you want with a copy of VMware Fusion on the side for luck. I don't agree with a network server being used as a workstation but sounds like you have an idea in mind. The new Mac Mini servers are quite fast.
