Not found a huge difference as yet as we are running it side by side for the moment and word is still spreading to the potential of it. My school has photography and media eat all the storage and don't think google will change that for the moment.

We use google apps and just assumed they scanned everything from day one along with every other company out there. Its free..... what did you think happened?

youtube education here. We used to use clipbank which is stupidly expensive and looked at Clickview which looked ok but at the end of the day students and staff wanted Youtube. Ability to open any video to all students and comments disabled by default all for free. Throw in google apps and they can upload their own videos all day long.

No doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong but for servers you will require a licence as your agreement will only cover upgrades (ie any desktop with a windows sticker). As for the cost, you should find it very cheap to add on. I think my servers cost me about £20 each or something silly like that under my agreement. Do you have a login for your licence agreement? https://www.microsoft.com/Licensing/servicecenter/default.aspx If not then contact whoever sorts your licence out to get access and you will have access to all the media and keys you will require for this. As a school, please don't buy a full price copy of the server as MS almost give it away to us. Hope this helps.

Fair point but we have Securus at my place which watches out for things like that. Should there ever be a real problem you would have to change their password to get access to their files but at the rate it is changing, I can see admin level access coming soon enough. Should a student be silly enough to do something like that, as it is all web based it would leave a paper trail a mile long anyway.

I have often pondered making a HTML page and setting it as everyone member of staff's homepage. A kind of network / systems status page they are forced to see which would be perfect for planned downtime messages.... The one fly in the ointment of this is I honestly have staff who, if there homepage is not set to the school's website, they honestly don't know how to get it unless it is a favourite. Maybe you are more lucky with your staff's IQ?

..... I have to reinstall all the clients again..... I honestly thought it was a fairly easy process and there was a way to tell the existing clients to point to the new Solus point.... Can anyone tell me why the hell we all stick with Capita. Is there such a school out there who has a teacher, headmaster, IT department or parent who are pleased 100% with how SIMS works? Has anyone honestly ever said, wow this latest update has helped my job? I know keeping all this data organised is no easy task but there has to be a better way than paying these people to bugger up EVERY release?

+vote for google here. Simple to setup and easier to manage than 365's SharePoint. Also the use of Chromebooks is the best thing to happen in education in along time.

Hyper-V should be easy enough to set up again should it fail.

My VMWare DC's use 4GB each. I am moving to 2012R2 soon and imagine they would be fine with that too. As for partitions, my 2008 ones have 40GB as a HHD partition but 60GB seems to be the norm nowadays but would think you could still get away with 40 GB easily. I only run one server core and it is great but only did it as a training exercise. If you are happy with server core then knock yourself out however if not then standard will be fine in a hyper V environment.

Dell all the way here. A few months back I had a hard drive fail and about 3 hours later I had an engineer at the reception with a new one. HP on the other hand have been nothing but a pain in the arse with my P4000. A hard drive goes and they want double proof it was bought when I say it was and then its a couple of days before a part turns up and they get really cranky about the old part being returned. Thankfully just scored a pile of Dell servers with Dell sans so I am in network manager heaven.
