No expert here but believe you have two options. First of all if you have an upto date System Centre you can do it. Failing that you should be able to provision apps into an offline image using DISM. As for your dependency, I would preload that using DISM if it were me but again, not done this 100% as I am more into removing the things (make profiles too large for my liking).

I have a group policy to create a C:\8.1 folder and further policy to copy the xml files and any other tweaks related to the OS such as default backgrounds. A sign that it is trying to apply the policy is when you sign in and it hasn't applied the XML, it still wont allow you to rearrange the start screen meaning it sees the policy but there is an issue with the file. As a user, see if you can navigate to where the .xml is stored to clear it as a permission problem. Also maybe for trouble shooting create a GP with just the policies / Administrative templates / Start Menu and Taskbar / Start Screen Layout in while disabling user configuration too. Rule out an issue with the rest of the group policies.

I would suggest you copy the xml to the machine rather than running it from a network location. On another note make sure you are putting "-As xml" at the end when creating your XML file. That got me for a while. Your not alone with Windows 8 being a pain in the arse mate but sure it will work out.

Afternoon, I have a handful of the original Surface RT's around and the general feedback I am getting is just how poor they are at maintaining a wireless connection. Anyone else noticed this at all or just me and my building? Ta

MSE at home and Kaspersky at work (may soon be Sophos though). Anyone who uses Norton at home or at work is not a techy. Not my opinion, just fact.

Virtualbox + image for programming classes
robjduk replied to mwbutler's topic in How do you do....it?
how does Virtualbox handle network cards. I gather a common problem with allowing students access to this kind of stuff is they can add network adapters and play. Although unlikely, they could in theory replicate a DC's IP or something. I have gathered that only the paid VMWare workstation got round this (which is what I told my IT teacher when he asked) so would love to hear. -
lol same here. I remember when I upgraded Veeam from 6 to 7 and had to remake my backups. Started my file server off (about 3 TB) which took about 24 hours on old version and BHAM.... 4 hours the thing was done!

Glad I am not the only one. Every time we have a SIMS update I get about 3-4 laptops where SIMS crashes the second it starts and with no uninstaller insight I just transfer their documents to another laptop and reimage the original. I long for the day I can just out Capita and their backwards thinking.
-
Are you using a new LiteTouch image? That got me to begin with.

omg Veeam is incredible

thank you all for the replies. some good options there.

4 hosts here, each with 128GB RAM and dual 6 core processors.

If true then Microsoft are sadly bowing down to the idiots from the stone age.

We went from about 15 physical down to 4 virtual about 3 years ago and not a moment has gone by when I haven't thought its the best thing we have ever done. Everything just sped up overnight using VMWare as the base software and managing it couldn't be easier. Even to this day I don't get how it works so much better on a fifth of the hardware.

Looking to hear from schools with a fully managed, 3rd party printer solution in place (i.e you get someone like Cannon or Ricoh to sort it all out). I guess I have a typical setup of various networked printers (about 40) along side a dedicated reprographics room where someone does the copying for teaching staff but would love to hear from schools who have gone down the fully managed route as we spend a crazy fortune on printing. I hear some places have removed basically all their printers and installed fancy printing rooms which only release jobs when someone turns up and keys in their personal number which I think would vastly reduce . To me that sounds like it will save me a fortune but could do with some experiences or company recommendations. My school is starting to tighten up its belt a little and wonder if I can not only save them some money but also offload all printers to a 3rd party in one swoop. Open to all suggestions. Thanks all

A stupidly expensive way to get around this but how about trying to sneak in a Sibelius upgrade into your budget? I just went from 6.2 to 7.5 and just started fresh with a new server and new licence key.

SLG is nothing but a poorly coded pain in the arse and far as I am concerned, Capita products are a stain on education. Please go and 100% confirm you are not required to run SLG as part of your deal as they require a couple more servers and sharepoint licences.

Exactly the same setup here and working perfectly. Must say I am very impressed with how 2012R2 is working as a print server.
-
I use roaming too and apart from the initial login its about 30-60 seconds here depending on device. Any mention of extra login times or huge resource use will put me off quick.

42 Ruckus AP's here and very easy to manage and update.

anyone else experiencing this? I got pricing for Sophos the other day and while impressive compared to Kaspersky, Kaspersky has little to no effect on logon speed.
-
Well I will see what the pricing comes back as and see what I can do as you all seem quite positive on the experience. Thanks all. On a quick note / dig... I can think of another piece of software which could benefit from scanning the network to see it needs to install the client *cough* solus 3 *cough* Thanks all
-
will it install the client on a machine which has been rebuilt? An occasional annoyance in the past has been Kaspersky not understanding the client was new due to its name being the same and not bothering to reinstall which is why I moved to MSI deployment with it.
-
With Sophos, is it deployable via MSI?
-
I bought mine just as a standalone from another retailer... it plays the Intel theme when you open it. Worth the price alone.
