What to, I actual bought my one in DIxons.

I've got a SanDisk Sansa clip, excellent little player. It supports FLAC (which is meant to be CD quality) aswell as MP3. The new version can also take a MiniSD card. It might be worth loooking at one of these and getting some good headphones aswell.

We do if they want them. We have 4 laptops set aside just for this job. 2 of them are quite decent, 1's ok and 1's awful. However in practice it's unusual for all 4 to be taken up.

Have you tried deleting the teacher's cached profile?

Sounds like a profiles issue. I'd imagine the sound cards software stores some proprietory data in there. Are your teachers using mandatory profiles?

The factory I worked at priced the tea/coffee so low that we ended up doing rounds. One person did winge because they drank the 12p nescafe coffee and some other people drank the 14p kenco coffee. This is before we get the people who went to the other side of the factory because the water was meant to be better over there. Oh and the one bloke who had to go to the one machine that sold Kenco really rich, not because he liked it, but because he was a Bristol Rover's supporter. This meant he couldn't drink coffee from a red cup. Then there was the day the paint shop decided washers were legal tender. And guess what this factory made? Coffee vending machines.

Then are generaly pretty awful, they're just cups pre filled with either instant coffee or a tea bag and whitener. I have once encountered a machine that brewed coffee, but they're few and far between. I remember when I was in 6th form we had one that didn't cost us anything, but the company took it out because we didn't spend enough. You could probably rent the machine, but it'll probably cost more then it takes. I used to work for the company who manufactured MaxPax machines, even a basis machine was several thousand pounds. Also as soon as you start enforcing payment people will just bring their own tea and coffee in.

Some students are just idiots. I stopped working at my old school 3 years ago. About 6 months ago a ran into one of their ex students (was now 18) in a takeaway. He decided it was a good idea to follow me half a mile home yelling my name continuousely my first name at me. I'm just gald he got bored of it.

Canon FS100s work, however you have to change the the file exentions. This is a little Autoit based doofer we use so the students can change these. It's far from purfect but it works. What I would say it we have got into camcorders in a big way. Here are a few pointers. One make sure you've done some testing and you know how much storage space your students are going to be using. Videos take up a stupid amount of space. Make sure you have a booking in and out system in place and set down ground rules. Problems we've had include students leaving kit in rooms at the end of lessons instead of returning it and staff members passing kit straight onto other staff making it very hard to track down. Make sure you have a management agreed policy that whoever has signed out kit is responsible for it. We have also had issues where 6 different students all from the same class turn up 2 minutes apart all wanting a camera the same when they're returned. You need to make it crystal clear to staff that this wastes your time and if they want 6 camera one person should collect all of them. Make sure you know if kit is insured to go out with trips. Make sure students and teachers know they need to download thier own videos. Make sure instructions are available so they have no excuse for trying to dump this on you. Make sure you've got all the right card readers and cables (including spares in stock, not matter how carefull you are they will go missing). With the FS100s you need the mains plugged in to transfer videos, so we use card readers instead. When booking out make you allow time for charging. You might want to get some spare batteries and some off battery chargers. We've got a couple of ansman ones. EDIT: Make sure staff understand the difference between project files and the completed video files. This causes loads of fun and games round here. convert.zip

I think short host names are sometimes resolved usign NetBIOS not DNS. So the mac isn't going to play ball with that.

The SWGfL provide a very similar service which we use. Teachers don't get added to the system unless they request it. I'd knock up a little report with the pros and cons and put it to managment. It means you won't be in the doo doo if it is misused. Also make sure teachers have their own accounts and are not using a generic account (for accoutability). Make sure the acceptable use policy for teachers is updated apropriately (it might even be worth adding something to the student AUP pacifically prohibiting them from using this) with some sensible ground rules. Students do not use unfiltered, unfilter must be disabled when a teacher leaves the room or the computer must be locked.

I couldn't get the one provided to work, I think it's intended for an RM network. I just captured one using WinInstallLE and bunged it out with a GPO.

The school I used to work for actualy went back to the original manufacturer not just for Mice and Keyboards but also Mouse Mats.

If you've got v1 and not v1.1 and you're using the server and client install it will die if you upgrade to Java 6. I couldn't go down that route, it had already be implemented before I arrived. We had a large collection of flaky local installs so it was a bit too late to go down the 'we can't make it work route'. The key thing is to get v1.1 of Nelson Thornes (they'll send it to you for free) and do the unofficial server install you'll be fine (hopefully).
