Hi All, I need to get a better idea for the makeup of files students are storing on our servers. I remember seeing a tool ages back to would make a picture with different coloured squares but can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

Generaly speaking your contract is with the company you bought the kit from, not the manufacturer. Also even though the Intel mother boards sold direct to the public have a 3 year warranty it doesn't mean the OEM ones sold to system builders do. I know for a fact that OEM CPUs only have a 1 year warranty (retail ones have a 3 year warranty).

Dos does not have the net use command built in, infact it doesn't even have TCP/IP built in. You won't get an ISO on here for two reasons, one despite does being ancient it's still copyrighted and two it was distributed on floppy disks and not CD. You might be able to modify the hosts.txt on these machines so SchoolProxy is pointed to the IP of your new proxy. You could also look into using WPAD, you'll have to put your test machines on static IPs so they can be differentiated from your normal machines.

I was speaking to an Aruba reseller the other day, in the last few days they've started including meshing in the standard package instead of charging for it. Make sure you get some quotes, Aruba do good education discounts and their APs are much cheaper if you buy in quantity (we asked for pricing for 25 and got quoted about half the indivisual pricing).

Did you create the VMs from scratch and join them to the domain or have they been imaged/copied. Try rejoining to the domain but first check they can ping servers etc.

It's odd that we're all still assuming that they'll still be students and teachers in the same space and that schools will exist in the way they do now. Maybe instead we'll have highly specialised teachers, theaching via video conferencing. If a teacher can be shared between 25 schools they could have a class who were not only or a similar ability but also had similar learning styles. The lesson could in theory be very exectly taylored to the students. This could also allow specialist subjects to be taught to children in schools where classes wouldn't be large enought to be viable. Instead of there needing to be 25 students in a school wanting to take a subject there would just need to be 25 students in the entire country. Students from different areas, weather they be in school, at home, at hospital or in prison could work together. Know knows maybe some of them will be posted with their parents on the moon.

If you want to try Linux without any partitioning get Sun's Virtualbox, excellent for trying out OSes.

As an antistatic precaution none of the ICT support team are permitted to come to work wearing spandex. The same rule has been applied to the site staff, not sure why.

We had this with HP3600 printers. It pretty much started over night, and got progressively worse. The official answer is they're only designed for small network where people will print direct to the printer's I.P. We've binned the ones in our ICT suites (some were under a year old) and told departments they've got to buy a new printer or live with it. The key thing seems to be to avoid anything that's 'host based'.

I'm going to be unpopular here. If I'd asked to have some sockets moved I'd expect them to use the same cable run. If I wanted a new cable run I'd have asked them for new sockets and had the old ones left well alone. Why didn't you just ask for new sockets.
