Check print driver isolation, that's usually a killer in 7/2008. Isolation is there to prevent a fault in one driver taking out the spooler service. DT

There's a very striking picture of JRR Tolkien in our TA drill hall. Being that he was once a Lancashire Fusilier, as were a good number of historically significant people. The film looks awesome. Hopefully as good as the book, though if LOTR is anything to go by, it'll be spot on. DT

I found Rosetta Stone works really well. My kids picked it up in no time. I think it's good, but didn't really work for me. There are some good french courses available that you can load onto your ipod etc, but maybe a night class would help? Self learning is all well and good, but particularly in french the grammar is difficult to grasp without any kind of help. I started french when I was 4, so to me it's easy to expand upon existing knowledge. DT

Always apply the 7 P's: Prior Planning and Preparation Prevents P### Poor Performance. Having worked with some schools previously, I always found that forward planning and notification of the correct person was an issue. Though I think mostly teachers either struggled to take on board, or plain old refused to attend any training provided. I think you guys are admirable for your patience alone.... DT

Its a little device that sits where a standard hearing aid would, but rather than amplifying sounds it generates white noise. You can then switch this to the level of your tinnitus, with a view to reducing it gradually until you get to the point where it's barely noticeable. It works, but as soon as I take it out the noise just comes flooding back. Night times are particularly difficult, as are telephones from time to time. It just doesn't make up for the fact my hearing in that ear is damaged around speech frequencies. DT

Tinnitus is a hideous affliction, I've had it severely in my left ear for well over a year, and as a result now wear a device that 'masks' the noise - great until you take it out. I acquired this under entirely different circumstances, but the law remains the same, the employer must provide sufficient hearing protection if you're required to work for any length of time in a noisy environment.
