Thanks Tech Guy, which model and size etc do you use?

Hi All, Looking to purchase a NAS box, mainly for the use of storing and archiving of video and photo evidence. I.e mapped shared drive that users can place folders of evidence media while taking the space strain off the main server. I would also like to back the server up to this as a extra backup medium. I have looked at QNAP and Synology so far but not sure what the real life pro,s and con,s of each brand are. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Paul

We had issues with our domain, when we changed provider and got useful info and help from Nominet, we proved who we were and they helped us with any info required. The help was free also.

A school in our area had a totally encrypted network after this, Servers and stations even the backup hard drives attached got encrypted.

I forgot to add I,m looking at another for one of my other schools, so big thumbs up for Stone. Had great hardware from them all round.

We had a new one from Stone last year, very pleased with it and the 5 Year Onsite warranty is a bonus. Our post sales service is always excellent with them.

Anyone had problems with the IOS update to Ipad Retina. We have updated two units and they fell over half way through and now only boot to USB/Apple Logo screen. Had several calls to Apple and no fix yet.

Another tip, I get staff to sign for memory sticks, new email address sheets etc. The reason is some will later say, Ive never been given an email address or stick and so out comes the signed list to prove otherwise.

I like the idea of keeping backups with other schools, saves the hassle of taking them home.

Local school to us had a fire recently and although the whole school did not burn down, nobody is allowed in for a long time due to the dust and asbestos. If backups are still in the school they are useless during this time. Some may argue if the school is shut what does it matter? The SIMS backups are needed for the temporary setup and all the finance packages. What ever you do to backup, make sure you have an offsite/remote backup, we didnt until this happened to a local school. Currently until an offsite remote backup is sorted, we have external HDD rotation, each day, on set is in the safe whilst another is backing up and also one set is off site. At worst the offsite maybe one or two days old but in the event of fire, flood etc this is an exceptable risk and fulfills the SFVS audits and insurance company audit.

I believe Draytek have a router for this purpose.

We had this on the old CC3 system, roaming profiles and cached local profiles caused it. As I remember in our case a user deleted files on one machine then they appeared on another because the profile was also stored locally on the other station. Try deleting the local profile and or deleting her roaming profile folder on the server, backup first tho lol.

We had a problem many moons ago where the DNS Servers at the provider changed after a period of time and caused a similar issue.

Just weighing up the classroom management software i.e NetSupport School etc. Only to be used in a suite of 20 stations in a primary. Any useful feedback on related products pro/cons etc? Many Thanks Paul

I used Clonezilla over the network that worked well in the past.. moved onto other deployment methods since tho

I understand how difficult it can be for you guys to get into contact with us Net Managers. I used to do a similar role when I worked in business. Nowadays I get calls hourly from X,Y and Z and I,m always honest enough to say that I use a few suppliers who I have built up a relationship with and are loyal as I can be to them as I hope they are too me. I,m not rude to any sales people, but sales reps are often rude to me when I dont have time to talk to them. However, the telephone manner can help, I dont know what you telephone manner is like. I have had people ring up and ask straight away "how many pc,s in school, how many servers etc' and my reply is the same 'why would I tell a complete stranger how much expensive kit is sat in our school?' I do however look at all my post, might put the usual irrelevant stuff like 'car leasing for business' junk in the recycling bin but I do open all and have been intrigued or interested in products I havent come across before. Timing of calls can be crucial, I get loads Monday morning (my busiest time) and loads at lunch (when I,m on Lunch!). Maybe this could be taken into account. We have a good recpetion here who dont fall for the usual 'I,m returning the IT chaps call' but they dont know my name mullarky. I would say mailshots land on my desk, referals work well, exposure on sites like this are good, and calls in my quiet periods stand a chance. Paul

Writing a .bat file in college, so the annoying lads pc next to me would shutdown whenever he hit a certain key!! Was hilarious at the time, even the techie couldnt figure out why, they presumed it was a mobo problem!!
