Don't forget to plan for extra capacity in your backup solution too...

What sort of file-server do you have at present? A SAN is probably overkill if it's only going to be used for home drives...

Bit of a thread resurrection here... but did you get anywhere with this? I'm also seeing Transparent HTTPS connection not supported by web client - but I think it's because the students are trying to use Skype without logging in to the SSL login page first...

Shouldn't be any issues. My Macs access the files on my NetApp SAN with no issues. Just bind your macs to AD and they'll connect to the home drive as specified in the user account properties.

Exactly... why make life complicated with more stuff to manage?

I'd agree with @FN-GM - our Macs connect to our SMB shares absolutely fine with no issues. OSX 10.5 through to 10.8. Check that your clients are up to date though - we did have some performance issues with some versions of 10.5.x and 10.7.x...

Hi @jamesbmarshall - thanks for the very useful reply! Yes, I know it's pretty complex. It's a mixture of mangement attitude to cloud solutions (they're a bit reluctant) and that at present we only have an ADSL backup to our main leased line (although I'm looking into swapping this for a 10mpbs EFM), not that we've really had any internet outages (thanks Vaioni!), but it's the peace of mind that it would offer! That's excellent - I wasn't exactly thrilled with the concept of having two tenants, I'd much rather split the GAL. Excellent! I agree with keeping things simple if possible. Clearly I need to think further about our plans and consider moving mail completely online. If we were to go completely cloud based, what would be the mechanism to move mailboxes over? Setup a hybrid co-existance and then "break" it and decomission the local exchange box? I know that with Exch2007 you'd do a cutover migration, but not sure about 2010.

Hello all, I'm certain that all the information is out there somewhere, but to be completely honest I'm struggling to find where it is - so I wonder if anyone else has done something similar? I currently have Exchange 2010 on site and am considering a Hybrid deployment with Office365. This is what I want to do: - Different domain name and GAL for staff and students - From what I've read I believe that I'll need two different tenancies to do this - is that correct? (And how would that affect DirSync?) - Use DirSync to sync usernames and passwords (I've looked at ADFS and at present I don't have the spare capacity to provide all the additional boxes that it requires) - Keep some staff mailboxes locally (but use an online archive mailbox to help to eliminate PST usage locally!) So... if anyone has done this, or something similar I'd be very glad to hear from you. Thanks!

Have to agree with @dhicks and @glennda. That's a remarkably crap and sensationalist bit of journalism, which the Daily Mail would be proud of - pick some info out of someones report - don't actually give any of the full details and imply they're spending too much for something. £6000 PA for a desktop PC could be quite right - depends on what's going on in the background infrastructure, software licences, cloud services, support contracts, warranties, staff costs... etc. etc. etc.

Yes, Microsoft do recommend not disabling IPv6, but there is a lot of debate as to whether it's really necessary. Looks to me from the DCDIAG output that maybe you (or whomever is responsible) didn't run ADPREP before adding the 2012 DC, perhaps?

Does DCDIAG show anything in particular? Do you need to be using IPv6 internally?

Ahh - that makes sense. One for 2014/15 I think when our NetApp filer is due for replacement. Although I have considered replicating to a separate ESX host in another building with DAS.

Hadn't actually thought of using the replication part of Veeam... What do you replicate to? Another Hyper-V/VMware cluster? or just another host?
