Hmm looks to me like the answer may be in that KB article. Of course your other option is to just 'ungracefully' trash the old DC - force the new one to take on the roles and then tidy up using ADSI edit.

Sorry to be late to the party again, but if you're having problems with AD, I would be a little wary about demoting a DC unless it won't have any impact. Have you checked the output of "REPADMIN /SHOWREPS"? Might help...

First step - try DCDIAG from a command prompt and see if there are any issues?

Are the switches in different buildings? or quite close together? If they're near to each other, within 90m, then I'd just use normal ethernet. If they're in different buildings then it'll depend upon the length of the fibre run - but usually, unless it's an enormous site, multimode is cheaper and preferred. I think from memory multimode is good for 300m and will still happily "do" 10Gb/s.

What sort of fibre do you have?

Hi @klop Do your clients get their IP addresses by DHCP? or do you assign them manually? If it's the former - check your DHCP scope to see what DNS servers, if any, you have specified. If that all looks good, the next step would be to go to a client machine and open a command prompt and check name resolution. 1. Try "ping server03" and see what IP address it tries to ping (if any) 2. Try "nslookup server03" - what result do you get? Let me know how you get on!

If you know a friendly gas safe plumber ask them to do a drop test on the meter, this'll detect if there's any leak on your side of the meter.

Have you installed the GPP extensions for XP and 2003 on those clients?

Hi Vlad, It's quite easy to work out what your annual running costs would be, please excuse me if I pitch this a bit low... Work out a lifecycle for all your kit - how long do you expect to want to keep each equipment type? e.g: Laptops - 3 years Desktops - 4 years Projectors - 5 years Servers - 3 years SAN/NAS - 3 years Network - 5 years+ etc. etc. Then do some relatively simple maths... So... if you buy your laptops at £500 each and have 200 of them and want to replace them every three years your annual cost for laptops would be (£500x200)/3 = £33,333.33 per annum. Do the same for all of the other items. That's your basic annual spend on hardware. Then you need to add in all of your annual running costs - software, support contracts, consumables, leased lines etc. Then you might want to add in a percentage for developmental stuff, R&D maybe? The end figure you come up with will probably be fairly substantial... so it'll be necessary to phase it in, and may be sensible to look at leasing deals for obtaining new hardware as you can spread the cost. This is very interesting - with all of the SIMS Schools that I've dealt with they've all been less than impressed with the performance. 1500-ish student school (Server 2008R2 with SQL 2008R2, Solus3 and Discover) Sims server Running on VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1, 4 vCPU (Quad Xeon X5650), 16GB RAM, NetApp FAS SAN with SATA drives (!), 1Gbit NIC. Our SAN is the achilles heel in this config - although it has lots of spindles the fact that it's based around SATA disks does make it a tad slow at times, but it'll be interesting to see how much of an impact this causes. No - your local domain can be whatever you like - the key thing is to setup Exchange so it knows what email domain it is responsible for and setting up the E-mail address policy so that it gives users the correct email addresses.

Hi @mikkydoos This is fairly straight forward and you could, assuming your LA are cooperative, ask them to setup an MX record for your subdomain and then you could retain it. These are the steps that I would take: 1. Configure Exchange accepted domains so that it will accept and be authoritative for your new domain (and optionally your old 'school.authority.ac.uk' domain). 2. Configure the Exchange E-mail address policy so that users get the correct email address(es) 3. Configure Exchange receive connectors for your domain(s) 5. Configure your MX records with your new IP addresses following the ISP swap 6. Check your firewall is setup to forward SMTP traffic to your mail server 7. Check your configuration with the Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyser (https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/) 8. Check all of your clients are setup to connect to your new mail server. That's it... I don't think I've forgotten anything!

I'd really recommend for anyone doing a wedding shoot - hire a decent body for the day - something that will shoot to two cards simultaneously. Well worth doing I think!

I've just moved away from GiffGaff for the same reasons you cite. I've moved to TalkMobile - a carphone warehouse owned company that use Vodafone as their carrier. So far, so good... number ported over next day after placing the order. Pretty impressive. I pay a whopping £7 a month for 250 mins, 5000 texts and 500mb of data.

So sorry to read about this - seems that it's all to easy for a **** with a camera to start up their own business these days. As a keen amateur photographer it really annoys me that you get so-called "pros" with all the gear and absolutely no idea what they are doing. Each teacher gets a laptop - is part of their "toolkit". No classrooms have PCs - in fact, we have very few desktop PCs available for staff use. We get the odd person who uses their laptop infrequently... but generally speaking they all get used rather well.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there... no such thing as "bulk ethernet"... I suspect it's the packaging.

This could prove to be quite a long list... but, here goes! - Documentation and diagrams - Procedure guides (how to...) - Acceptable Use Policies and similar... (e.g. we get staff to sign an agreement when we give them a laptop, and another when they use activesync to say that they allow us to remote wipe their devices). - FAQ / Knowledgebase - Helpdesk - Regular staff meetings (make sure everyone is reading from the same sheet, as it were) - Store everything in clearly labelled boxes. - Keep an up-to-date asset register. - Change control/management That's all I can think of for now...
