You can get some android apps that'll forward SMS to an email account - would that work?

Initially I spoke to Nimble directly about my requirements, and they sent me some info, had a few webinars and I spoke to a few existing customers. The rest of the vSphere build I specced myself - I'm quite a VMware nerd and so it's quite easy to do yourself. In the end I got everything (Nimble SANs, HP servers, switches etc.) all through the same supplier as they were most competitive. Let me know if you need any more info.

I'm a new Nimble user - I can understand your concern about them being relatively unknown, but their market share is growing at a fair pace and even my old NetApp account manager acknowledged this. I wouldn't say it was quite as simple as Tallwood_6 put it - NetApp were able to put together a quote which came very close to the Nimble one in terms of sizing and performance, as did Huawei (if you count them as a 'known' vendor), but the Nimble is a very straightforward beast in terms of administration which is quite appealing. I'd say, so far, I'm very impressed with the Nimble SAN - we're using it with a vSphere 5.5 cluster and the performance is impressive. We should have enough headroom to be able to do a small-ish scale VDI roll-out in the future, too.

Veeam is great and will do what you want it to do. I'd avoid Symantec - we're phasing it out in favour of Veeam. It's a one off cost for the initial purchase, but it's really worth paying the annual support to get upgrades and support where necessary. I think it's really good value.

I've now got a deal with my wife whereby it's a one-in, one-out policy on guitars and so I've decided to let go of my lovely Rickenbacker 330 - I've owned this guitar for approximately 14 years and have barely played it - it has spent most of its life on a wall hanger being occasionally polished! I bought this because I thought I could be the next Johnny Marr - but sadly I'm lacking in talent a little. The guitar plays beautifully and has a great range of tones. Recently I've started playing bass and really need space for a new one and an amp. It's in excellent condition and comes with the original hardcase, Rickenbacker cleaning cloth and other bits and pieces! The hardcase has got a couple of minor scuffs where it has been stored, but is generally in very good condition. The serial number dates this guitar as being made in February 1996. It's £2000 per user, right? Joking aside, it's not really possible for their budget, is it? I think you just need to politely explain that it's not achievable for their available budget and then try and turn it into a way to make money in another way...

I believe the general recommendation from Microsoft is to leave a DC as just that - don't put any additional services on it. From a day-to-day point of view, I suppose it shouldn't cause any issues, but given that there's the opportunity to do this in a "cleaner" fashion then that would be my recommendation.

Probably not the best idea. Why not setup the new server as a virtual host either running ESXi free or Hyper-V and then have both the DC and the WSUS server virtualised.

Ok - I've seen a few recommendations to avoid using E1000E cards on VMware with iSCSI storage. The recommendation is to use VMXNET3 instead (note that this requires VMTools). It's probably also worth checking out this thread: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2012/136984-windows-server-2012-extremely-slow-performance-executing-files.html - there's some interesting info about the SMB implementation on 2012.

Are you using VMware? If so - what NIC type are your VMs using?

How about a VM with nonpersistent disks?

HP Procurve here - the quality of the kit is excellent, and the support has been truly outstanding. Bid pricing from HP will bring the purchase cost down considerably - our final HP solution when we overhauled our entire LAN was cheaper than a Netgear equivalent.

Get HP bid pricing on an ML350... should come in at around that sort of figure, plus it's HP!
