Don't use a desktop - for that sort of money you could get a low-end HP Proliant - have a look at the Microsever Gen8, the ML310 or the DL320... easily achievable for £500.

You can use the vSphere client or SSH... if that's any use? There's no web client though unless you have a vCenter server.

I think the memory limit has been removed now. It's well worth a look if you're only planning to use a single VM host. If you're thinking about expanding - Essentials Plus is the one to get, that'll allow up to three hosts and includes vMotion which is most useful.

Get a Halifax Clarity credit card - they won't charge you for taking money out while abroad. Also worth getting lots of small dollars before you go, as it's been said, you'll need to tip a fair amount and it's useful to have small denominations. Not sure if you're anywhere near central london, but Covent Garden FX is always a really good rate on dollars, even better if you pre-book it via their website first.

Personally I prefer VMware it just makes more sense to me, but I guess that's because I've been working with it for the last 3-ish years. You could definitely reduce your costs by moving to Hyper-V and these days I can't really think of any particular feature that you would miss. Moving to Hyper-V is also fairly straightforward, there are quite a few tools that'll help you do V2V conversions of existing VMware VMs. In your position I'd setup a lab with Hyper-V and familiarise myself with it. You've not really got anything to lose.

@3s-gtech does having that much RAM really make much of a difference? Edit to say - we have a virtual 2008R2 box running SQL 2008, 16GB RAM and 4 vCPU.

If you don't want people to have to remember the port number then I'd do this... 1. Create an alias (CNAME) record in DNS for "printing" that points to "servername" 2. Create an IIS site (or apache if you're that way inclined...) that has "printing" as the host-header address - in this site set the default.html to use redirect tags to go to the site with the port number included (e.g. ) 3. Yes - if you add them it normally prompts that they were previously managed by a different vCenter server, but will let you add them and carry on.

Do you mean vCenter? If so - it's pretty straightforward. You've got two options: 1. Create a new VM, install SQL and restore the last good backup of the vCentre DB - then install vCentre and point it at the database. Actually, depending on what version of VMware you're running it's not quite that simple - 5.0 onwards also will need some fiddling to get SSO working again. 2. Create a new VM, install vCentre and setup from scratch - should be pretty straightforward as all you'll really need to do is import the hosts, and do a little bit of minor config. Personally, if you've only got a few hosts I'd go with option 2. Ant
