I seem to remember I queried this with Ruckus and they said that the APs would continue to function with their current config without the H/W controller for a certain period of time (I can't remember what this was though!). The only proviso was that they wouldn't carry on supporting any RADIUS based authentication as that is all done by the Zonedirector box.

How big is your ruckus install? 56 APs with a single ZoneDirector 3000 How reliable is it? Absolutely reliable - I've never had an issue. It's now been running without any downtime since August 2010. How many devices you have on it? I've got a total of around 250 devices. Any problems you have had? None whatsoever. Did you self install or get a third party to install? I did it all myself... in fact, the initial install (apart from the actual physical placing of the APs and the wireless survey) took around 20 minutes. How would you compare it against the likes of meru? I did a full comparison and trial with other products, Meru, Xirrus, Aruba, Cisco and HP. The Ruckus solution was the best value for money and also offered the best coverage for our environment. The Ruckus solution I've got now replaced an (inherited) 120-140 deployment of standalone APs... it's literally a million times better. Well, maybe not literally a million times better, but you know what I mean.

Just out of interest, how do you restrict this?

You should be able to look at the historical performance data in the vSphere client for each VM and narrow it down that way - look at the disk performance and see where the highest latency is.

I know that you can do RFID tracking with a Ruckus wireless network... you need pretty impressive AP density though for it to be accurate.

Hmm... interesting. I think I'm going to sit tight with TMG for a while and spend some time at BETT seeing what alternatives are available. It doesn't appear that there is a single product available that will replace TMG in the ways I use it - Firewall, Proxy, Reverse-proxy, VPN... etc.

This is interesting - I've also just started to look at alternatives to TMG - in particular I'm keen for something that will do the reverse proxying that I use for publishing sites. It's a bit of an odd move for Microsoft I think... I know a lot of people dislike ISA and TMG - but I've found them both to be pretty good.

I've had a Ruckus system for about two years with around 54 APs. It's been absolutely faultless with no downtime at all. Most usage we see is around 20 devices per AP due to the distribution density of the APs. I love it. A lot.

I can only echo the points made above - logging calls online seems to only lead to an auto-reply email and action only happens when I speak to my account manager. In fact that's just reminded me that I've got a case logged that's now 13 days old... Having said that, the quality of the technical support that I get when I speak to a tech is very good - in particular Chris Richardson is a star.

DNS should use the forwarders before it tries to use the root hints... Odd that it can't resolve them though!

SharePoint might be an option. You could upload the students' work and the excel spreadsheets to document libraries - maybe one per primary school and then issue AD logons for the staff that need to access them and restrict access to the relevant areas.

Cool. You might find you get quicker results by looking at the DNS records and deleting any records pointing to the 192.x.x.x address...

@sadams1980 - there's your problem - because the DNS server has got two NICs both IP addresses will resolve the server name. Is the server supposed to have two NICs? In the DNS config you can choose which IP addresses the server will listen on.

Sounds like a DNS issue to me rather than a routing issue. If the trace route using the server's IP address is fine from a .45.x client but the trace route using the server's name isn't ok - then I'd suspect that the name isn't resolving to the correct ip address. If you try and ping the server by name - what IP address does it resolve to?

Procurve 5406zl is perfect, I've got a 5412zl... which I only got because of a very good deal. I'm thinking about getting a 5406zl so that I've got redundancy at the core.

Those must have been the Smart Covers - the Smart Case does front and back.

We use the Apple Smart Cases here - they work a treat with our cart.

You *could* use this... but I can't imagine that the performance will be particularly amazing. It's only using 5 SATA disks so the IOPS will be pretty low. I'd try and look for something with more disks and if possible SAS disks - have a look at the Thecus range - that's on the more affordable side for "proper" storage.

As @glennda said, a 10TB SAN is potentially expensive. 10TB is lot of space for just four VMs - what exactly do you want to achieve?

I'm using 2010 here and it's fine... I've been using B-Exec for years in fact and have never had any major issues at all. I think it's pretty straight-forward and does what it says on the tin - it's as complicated as you want it to be really. I also use Veeam to complement it though - and that is truly excellent. @zag - download a trial of Veeam from their website... then just contact your usual IT resellers for a quote.
