  7. Finally managed to shift these monolithic beasts out of the comms room (they've been stuck in there doing nothing for two years). They're dual Xeon 3.0Ghz with 8GB RAM and 12 x 146GB SAS 10k HDD. Any takers? They're working... we booted them up yesterday to wipe the disks. Pick up in Croydon. Ta, Ant

  9. Network Policy Server (NPS) is built into W2K8. Setting it up is fairly straight forward - in a nutshell: 1. Add your RADIUS clients to NPS (e.g. the devices that are going to be doing the authentication on behalf of the clients. In this case I'm guessing it's your Meru controller) 2. Create a connection request policy (e.g. tell the NPS server that it will handle Radius requests from WiFi or wired clients) 3. Create a network policy - tell the NPS server who is allowed to be authenticated by it - I allow all "Domain Computers" to authenticate to my wireless network. 3a. I have other network policies for wired clients - these policies do clever things like dynamic VLAN assignment based on what AD group the computer account is in. 4. Configure the Meru box to use the NPS server for RADIUS. 5. That's about it! Shout if you need any more specific pointers.

  13. @mrbios - that's a very good question. I have a feeling there is no official support for SSDs in the Netapp chassis yet. But I'll do some research!
  14. Yep... disk IOPS is the issue with SQL... oddly enough everything else (including Exchange 2010, which surprised me) is perfectly happy.
  15. Do you use them as an iSCSI target for VMs? What's the performance like? (I'm running a Netapp FAS-2020 here... and the performance is adequate but not amazing, so I have considered using a secondary SAN to speed up the more disk intensive VMs...)
  16. @AButters - (Sorry to thread hijack) What manufacturer was your SAN? (Tier 1? Sun, LeftHand, NetAPP, EMC?) I'm intrigued by those Infortrend boxes... they're mega-cheap!

  18. Just wondering... Does anyone "deploy" windows firewall settings via Group Policy and limit outgoing connections? rather than the default allow? A bit of background: I'm currently trying to find ways to disable the P2P features of Spotify (it upsets my Forefront TMG firewall) and one of the most obvious ways I can see to do it is via a Windows Firewall rule. However, in order to do this I need to explicitly define all outgoing ports and I'm lazy and not sure I can be bothered. Meh. Maybe one to tackle on a day other than a Monday!

  20. It should be pretty similar - but ever so subtly different! Do you need to get it working for multicast or directed broadcast?
  21. Sorted it. Needed to put in the following command for the originating VLAN: ip forward-protocol udp x.x.x.x 1053 ip forward-protocol udp x.x.x.x 796 Where x.x.x.x is the broadcast address for the destination VLAN... NB. It helps a lot if you use the correct broadcast address. D'oh.
