We've just been through a bit of a restructure here - so our new structure is: SMT IT person --> ICT Manager --> Network Manager / MIS Manager --> Senior IT Technician / Executive Support Technician --> Junior IT Technician

My thoughts exactly - get a job. Any job... doesn't really matter what it is. You'll meet people, you might meet people that know somewhere that needs an IT Tech. It wouldn't do any harm at all.

Have you thought about doing any volunteer work? I'm currently doing a bit of recruiting and I'm impressed by those candidates who are out of work, yet are doing some volunteer work (IT based usually) to keep themselves ticking over. I think most places looking for volunteers will happily pay travel expenses - so perhaps that's worth a look at?

Can you ping your ghost server over from the other VLAN? Does the other "VLAN" get IP addresses from your DHCP server on your main native VLAN?

@AlexB - No... I fully appreciate it could appear a bit like that, but that's not the case at all. We've created 1.5 new roles (one was part-time), already had a fairly large team anyway, and two people have recently left / are leaving. @BKGarry - Not much standard technical support to be honest - I suppose over holidays and the more quiet times you'll be expected to contribute (hardware refreshes and such), but the team is structured so that that MIS Manager will be mostly MIS focussed. It's pretty easy to get to by rail - South Croydon station is about a 5 min walk.

These have been sitting on a shelf for the last 14 months gathering dust and I thought it's about time I did something worthwhile with them. Therefore, free to a good home (available to pick up from Croydon, Surrey) is the following: 4 x Netgear FSM-726 switches 1 x 3Com 3CR16110-95 Firewall 15 x 3Com 4226T switches 2 x 3Com 4228G switches 2 x 3Com 4400SE switches There were all technically working (flashy lights, fans whirring) when I ripped them out last summer but I suspect some of them may have dodgy ports... and they are quite old now. But... they are free! and if nothing else could be quite useful as a door-stop. Any takers? Ant

We use Netapp here - a basic FAS-2020 (with an expansion shelf for more disks) - it's great. On the cheaper side of things - I hear Thecus make some perfectly serviceable SANs for smaller environments.

I'd like to resurrect this... I'm looking at "FOPE"... I'd imagine that it does what it says on the tin, but are there any users out there that would like to confirm?

If your switches support them, you could do this using Access Control Lists (ACLs).

You also need to make sure that the fibre patch lead you buy is the same sort of fibre as the "backbone" cable... e.g. 50/125 or 62.5/125.

What type of fibre is it? OM3?

What about just trying to use telnet to talk to your Exchange box? Try a simple mail delivery using HELO/EHLO and see if that works? I hate to state the bleeding obvious - but is your receive connector on Exchange set to allow anonymous users?
