[Norfolk] [Filtering] Down?
BaccyNet replied to NeoPlosive's topic in East of England Broadband Network (E2BN)
Yup this was true. We lost the net for a about an hour overall. Something to do with web filtering failing, good job the kids didnt notice! -
Hi all I've got two full sets of HP Colour LaserJet 4500/4550 toner (C4191A, C4192A, C4193A & C4194A). All boxed as new. I'm having to sell them as some wonderful child broke the printer they were bought for!! Link to show what they are (and current market price): HP Color LaserJet C4193A Magenta Print Cartridge (C4193A) specifications - HP Small & Medium Business products Make me an offer (I may be willing to exchange for other toner), I'd prefer someone picks them up but we can talk postage if you wish. Thanks Steve:)

We used to have a similar problem here. It solved itself though when we upgraded all our switches to Procurves and set the multicast filtering option on the computers VLAN.Our cachepilot was clever enough to not touch the packets but the router with the 10mb card seemed to like reading each packet of a ghost image (one room of 10 computers, 10gb image took nearly a full day!!)

[Norfolk] [Broadband] 100MB Upgrades
BaccyNet replied to NeoPlosive's topic in East of England Broadband Network (E2BN)
Anyone else noticed a ticket appear on ICTS helpdesk about an ADSL line??? They are going to have some fun getting that to our server room now the building work has been completed:D -
Without stating the school name, which side of Norfolk is this? I cant say over this way I know of a school (high school) around this way that doesnt have an IT Department of some kind, even primaries that are not in an ICTS Field Tech contract have someone supporting them (usually their local high school, like we do:)) Do you know if the school has a contract with ICTS higher than the basic package? It may be they have a field technician visiting on a set basis or on a call-out only basis?

Hi Michael Great news! You'll get to know me very well in the coming months, I've got a bunch of exams I should have done by now:) I got as far as getting people to agree to being a test centre, guess I dont have to focus on that anymore. Now to find my training books..... Steve:)

Have had this kind of thing a few times now. First time was with a re-wired server room. Every night it would trip, in the end the then NM stayed here all night and waited for it to trip, seemed the draw that came from the backups starting and then copying to USB disks caused it. Got trip changed for slightly less sensitive one and things were fine (server room has been re-wired again since then and this was taken into account this time!) Second time was a dodgy PSU in a computer, it only tripped once though as the PSU gave up and it was during the day. I agree with the suggestions that each ring should have an RCD on it. That way you wont lose all your computers every time and it will then narrow down whats causing it (only one RCD should then go) Just my 2 cents:)

I dont believe they do, at least we had to buy them seperatly when we bought ours a year ago.

The only labelling I have done to our cables are done on the core switch itself (above the socket where it connects to) Couldnt get labels to stick to the cables plus we were changing connections too frequently for it to be any use! I've been lucky as now though since the majority of what was in place has been replaced through the building project so I have been able to colour code all of our cabinets: Orange > Data Yellow > POE Carrier Blue > Data for POE Injector Green > Uplink Red > Printers (VLAN'd, although havnt done this one to any cabs yet) Grey/White/Cream/others > Whatever else there is that needed doing and coulldnt find a cable long enough in the right colour:D Each cabinet (as I'm getting round them) has a small 'ID sticker' on the frint pane showing what each colour means and an ID number for the cabinet. Thus all documentation refers to a cabinet by its ID rather than wording. I'm also sad enough to have a full school plan on the wall that has each room coloured to denote which cab serves it as well as the locations of the cabs themselves. Theres many different ways of doing this, its up to you as to which way is best for your situation.

We have PC's in every teaching room here. Staff love the fact that any PC they visit in a room is fast and has access to what they need regardless. We brought this in at the time we began electronic registration as we felt this would give the best 'experience' for them. Staff still have laptops but there are some who have given them back as they dont want them since the computers went in. Hopefully we will be moving away from them once Citrix Web Access is working but thats not for a while yet.

I'm interested to hear if anyone else has this problem. We have recently moved to Serco Facility and its a pain getting help if you cant get gotoassist running. We havnt had it working for months, then suddenly its worked flawlessly for the past few weeks. Today its stopped again! We were told by an IT support company that it was because we hadnt installed DNS on our MIS server (strangely, we havnt had any issues with DNS and people arnt using that server for the GTA sessions. I'm not quite sure how they came to that conclusion:eek:)

We have a c7000 chassis here but it was a while ago that it was setup so I'm a little hazy (it fixes itself most of the time so I never have to do much to it!) To install an OS, then the guides mentioned will help you. I'm not sure what you mean by ICE? I'm not sure of the differences between the c3000 and the c7000 (too lazy to google it right now:D) but I'm guessing you have already fitted psu's, fans, on-board administrator(s), switche(s)? Is it just loading of software your having trouble with?

We dont support hardware that has not been agreed/purchased by the NM. We are trying to standardise everything in the school to make things easier for both staff, students and us. That way if a member of staff can print to one networked printer with a certain document, it'll print on any of the others (simplistic example:)) We arnt totally there yet but hopefully will be soon.

Desktop background on Citrix thin client
BaccyNet replied to Andyhall's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Not sure what other people running a thin client system would say but we were advised strongly against using a backround of any sorts (screen refreshes and suchlike were mentioned) We have set the backround colour of students logons to the same colour as the wallpaper would have been anyway, just doesnt have the logo! As for your question, you would set it in the same way you already do in AD. I cant confirm if that works 100% though for the reason above:) -
Is this camera undercover or is it 'out in the elements'? Looks a lot like something has gotten into the lense as the camera is still trying to show an image. I agree that you'll probably need to get it down from wherever it is and have a closer look.

Pics of mine available here: Steven Baxter (UK) I have changed things slightly since these were taken (fitted two new hard disks, tidied cables, etc) Probably going to change it sometime this/next year. The watercooling is keeping me on edge everytime I use it:eek:

We currently run two sets of them here, one older 'blue' set and a set of 30 red ones with little screens in them (technical explanation as I dont know models) The red set were bought by our maths department and get a fair amount of use. One of the dept created a whole bunch of resources and has shared them out accross the network. The blue set doesnt get used as much but there seemed to be a fair amount of interest in them recently.

[Norfolk] [Broadband] 100MB Upgrades
BaccyNet replied to NeoPlosive's topic in East of England Broadband Network (E2BN)
100mb here too for a few weeks now, although you cant really tell the difference. Now we're just waiting for the backup ADSL line to be put in and a new cachepilot and we'll be set:) -
Cant say I've used/seen that system before. Their website isnt very specific as to what you get! I have noticed that Eastern Telephones are Norwich based, have you given Marshland Telecom a try? I can PM you some contact details if you like?
-
We used a company called Novus Networks, very good sales and excellent support. We had HP Blade chassis with 6 blades + 75 HP thin client devices installed last year as a kind of pilot. Works so well we hope to roll more out this year. Havn't got contact details to hand but can PM to you if you like?

:DI've currently got a watercooled computer as my main system (at home, wouldnt be allowed at work:p) Currently watercooled Intel Core2 processor and two ATI Radeon X1900's. It took ages to get the air out of the processor block, plus you do have to keep an eye on the water level (or liquid coolant if that is what you use) as it seems to go down even if there are no leaks:eek: Reason I did it was I wanted to see if I could, plus the number of fans I would have had is silly. Also you may want to find some kind of monitoring board/software/whatever to check that your pump is running or shutdown the computer if not. My computer BSOD'd the other day which resulted in the pump being switched off, that wasnt the greatest few seconds of my life:D If you want to ask any more questions or you want to see some pictures of what it took to do, let me know!

All Office updates rolled out here too. I do a fair bit of programming myself and theres nothing more annoying than having to write chunks of code to cover for the fact someone cant be bothered to keep office/windows up to date! Also I'm pretty sure our county IT peeps wouldnt be too happy if we werent running all latest updates/service packs for Microsoft stuff.

Congrats to you Simon (and your lucky lady!)

We are due to be trialling GroupCall soon with our CMIS system. I must admit though that I dont plan on putting my mobile number anywhere on CMIS if they decide to use it to alert staff of closures, its taken me long enough to get it off our old MIS:D

We signed up a few weeks ago but havnt been asked to fax our details anywhere yet, hopefully it'll come through soon. We dont currently teach anything that involves most of the software on offer but I thought it would be a good idea to offer it to the kids anyway.
