Our firealarm decided to trigger just at lunch. Was great considering they couldnt get it to switch off again! I've never seen so many staff looking cold and unhappy!! Apart from that, nothing else went wrong, in fact I actually got some work done today

I currently own a Cisco 1801 router. It's been running like a charm for a while now. Thought it had an issue but it turned out to be some load balancing thing my ISP did that would disconnect us and not allow reconnection for hours at a time. Great finding that out after speaking to cisco support:rolleyes:

We havnt used them directly but our supplier has sent us stuff from them (yeah I know, the bill would have been higher:rolleyes:) and the stuff that has turned up has been on time and every piece of it worked (48 slimline HP computers, 60 HP thin client terminals, 108 HP monitors) Oh yeah, we love HP kit:D

If you want more than four boxes (or more than two Sky+) there is an 'octo' LNB. I currently have one on the end of my dish:D

Hey Ric! The phone is new so there shouldnt be any problem there. Also it works fine when using a power brick, not a single problem. I have tried plugging directly into the injector, same result. Even tried ports at different ends of the PoE switch. The Injector is a Planet POE-2400 if that makes any difference. Steve:)

Hey all! So I've been in for my first day of half-term and I've already broken something:D I have a Mitel 5212 handset that boots fine when connected to a 'power brick' but the second is is connected to a POE injector it fails to download the boot image correctly. I have tried the following: + Different patch socket + Different POE ports + Different switch ports + Checked config of switch + Checked config of POE injector (although it doesnt do much!) + Different patch cables The PBX doesnt show anything different or any error messages, there is no problem with any computer/network activity so it seems to be something the injector is doing. All the other handsets are working fine from it but I dont have another injector to test in its place. Any suggestions? I hoped this would be a quick and easy job for me to do whilst awaiting a delivery of computers but yet again IT takes a dislike to me:p Thanks Steve:)

We've just got a HP rack and I gotta say it makes things so much easier! As far as Prisim racks being rubbish, We've got quite a few of various sizes and not had any trouble with them (although they only have switches/patch panels in them!) The HP only currently houses our new blade chassis and a ups. I really want to change our other rack to a HP though:p Just a slight spin-off, how many of you have fire surpression in your server rooms? We've got air-con (was that a battle!!) and hopefully sometime they may finally put the new flooring down in there. I'm just curious as to if people see the need for fire stuff? Steve:)

Did you uninstall the previous version of Smart software? I'm sure I read somewhere that it wont install if an older version is already there. May be wrong though:)

Get yourself one of those cheapish tool kits such as: MAPLIN TOOL KIT They are small enough to carry from place to place but contain most of the tools you would need for a basic home visit. As Synack suggests, a good selection of CD's with utilities and some form of Linux are always handy. When I used to do home visits (not anymore, business is where the moneys at:D) I used to take along a laptop as well. Was always handy for things like setting up wireless routers and suchlike as you could preload a bunch of setup tools onto it as well as being able to use an internet link (if they have one) to get drivers/patches if the machine being worked on wasnt up to it. It wasnt that powerful but then it didnt need to be. Hope this is of some use! Steve

Anyone have any experience with purchasing telecoms?
BaccyNet replied to Disease's topic in How do you do....it?
We moved over the a VOIP system about 5 or so years ago. We currently have a Mitel 3300 system running about 57 handsets and about 80 voicemail boxes, connected to an ISDN30. Admittedly the handsets do cost a fair bit compared to a standard telephone but then you do get the convenience (well not quite:p) of being able to move handsets as easy as unplugging from one network socket to another. The whole thing was installed over the summer holidays with training sessions for all key memebers of staff before they came back in September. The guys that put it in have also kept in regular contact and are great for finding out how to do something fancy when you dont know:D -
I'm not sure about this model but we have a slightly different Epson that does the same thing when the security code has been entered wrong three times. If you remove power from the unit for a few minutes, it then should ask you to re-enter the security code again.

Why do you need two DHCP servers, would one not surfice? If not, what differences in config are you looking at doing (gateways, DNS, etc)?

Usual work-wear is a decent-ish pair of trousers and a shirt. Have been known on the odd occasion to wear a suit but its really not practical when working next to (in!) a building site. I would wear a suit everyday to work, if they put in air-con and paid me enough to buy them. Our deputy head is currently entertaining the idea of 'uniform' for all support staff starting with us, wouldnt mind so much but you just know that we wont get the slightest bit of input about it:rolleyes:

BaccyNet replied to Dos_Box's topic in General EduGeek News/Announcements

Bit of an update: ActiveTalk Academic (Norwich) have recently become a Prometric centre which is very good news for us rural Norfolk folk! Hope this is of use to someone Steve:)

Sorry to drag up an old post but I've only just seen this thread! I'm currently with NITLC doing their Technical & Service Engineer (TSE) course. I've found them very good (so far!) with the materials being sent to me very quickly. I will admit that before I signed up there was a few teething problems (they used to have a regional person come and speak to you about the courses but I had a few problems with the one who visited me) but they sorted themselves out very quickly (and even got a reduction on modules that I didnt need!) They have recently changed their courses so the TSE course is no longer available although there is an alternative one. The TSE course I'm on now covers CompTia A+, CompTia Network+, MCSA, MCSE and CCNA. If you want to know any more or have any questions, feel free to PM me for a chat. Steve

Hi folks! Hope you've all had a good 'winter festival'. I know I enjoyed having a bit of a holiday I was meaning to do this before Christmas but forgot and as I've just seen them today reminded me to post. The one and only HP CLJ4550 broke last year and as it was going to cost waaaay too much to repair we decided to replace it. Great apart from the two full sets of toner I currently hold for it! So before I try and Ebay it, I thought I'd give some Edugeekers the chance of taking them off my hands! I would love to say free to good home but as it's two sets (and they were only bought recently!) I need to try and recoupe some of the money we sunk into these. There are two of each colour (Black, Magenta, Cyan and Yellow) all boxed HP ones, that fit the 4500 series. If possible collection from Swaffham, Norfolk. If your really interested and its the delivery putting you off I'm sure I can try and organise something 8) PM me if you want any more details. I dont want to put a set price on these so offers are most welcome! I will need to have them gone by the end of January though (REALLY need the space) so if no-one wants them from here, I'll be auctioning them off. Cheers Steve 8)

Congrats on landing the job. Hope you have a good last day

Like most on here, its the shirt and decent trousers thing for me, although I did do the shirt and tie thing I very quickly found out a tie cannot be worn in IT I dont claim to be that smartly dressed either even though some people would say so (untucked shirt, jean-like trousers - they said smart yet casual!!) I certainly dont wear that in the hols as usually holidays are spent moving dusty computers/cabinets or working around the high school's build project. I've learnt not to wear decent dark trousers when going in there

You say it was being used on the domain, is this still the case? If so, couldnt you logon as the domain administrator and create a new account (or reset and old one) on the laptop? I might be wrong of course, but I'm sure this has worked for me previously
