Spoekn to HP who reckon I need someone to look at the printer as it seems to be faulty:rolleyes: They suggested I phone my local HP Specialist to get it repaired. I then spoke to both local HP people who want to charge me £80 for the first hour and then £25 per 15 min after to fix a printer in warranty!!! Not sure what to do now, I can get it to work with a different JetDirect card but I dont want to be paying out for three of those (possibly more) on a printer thats lkess than 6 months old. Any ideas anyone???

Cant say I've looked at this but we have recently worked with Novus to install a 75 terminal thin client blade system accross the school. Very knowledgeable folks and they had the whole install done in a week. We went live with it the following Monday with parents being the first to use it:eek: We've been happily showing people our setup since we had it put in, maybe we should have asked about sponsorship before we purchassed ours:D

They dont seem to be losing their IP's. Even after setting them a new one they still dont print. In the depths of google there is a mention that it may be the formatter board being faulty but no-one says if I can get this done under warranty or if there are batch numbers that are affected.

Hey all! Having a bit of a nightmare with these printers. They have all been installed on our Server 2003 Print server and have been working fine for several months now. Recently one of them decided to stop printing anything. You cannot ping the printer nor access its web interface, you can however attach a USB cable and print through it. I have performed a cold reset as well as flashing the ROM to the latest version, then disabled every other protocol on the network card which seemed to work. Problem solved placed printer back in room. This morning the printer is doing exactly the same thing (no printing, cannot ping, etc) What has now made it worse is I now have two more of that model doing the same thing. I would suspect the print server on the 2003 box but it still has three other P3005's that are working fine (for how much longer who knows!) I have tried a different print server in the first printer which allowed it to survive overnight but this isnt a solution I want to follow on what are new printers. All printers (working & not) have exactly the same config apart from IP address. Anyone else had a problem like this? Google is failing me this week plus people are getting unhappy as the printer keeps being fixed and then broken again:rolleyes:

Anyone know what is going on with BSF in Norfolk? I wasnt lucky enough to be at the Network Managers Conference where it was raised so dont have anything to go by apart from a rough date of September 09. Any info greatly appreciated:)

We have two HP ScanJet N6010's for this kind of stuff. The HP software allows you to scan straight to PDF and also includes OCR software. We did have a bit of an issue though with the straight to printer option not working as we had too many network printers added to the system (20?) We have a little script that runs instead to remove a bunch of printers, send the doc to the default, then adds the rest back again.

I'm not 100% sure how I ended up with mine. Many years ago when I was a wee lad everyone at school would call you by your surname (which proved a problem as my twin brother was at school with me:p) Someone decided to change my surname around a little and somehow came up with baccy. Couple of years later the net bit was added as I joined the wonders of t'internet. No I'm not a keen gardener of certain smokeable plants, nor do I smoke myself so I'm not sure why they came to that name! The things you have to remeber these days.....

We've tried this twice with little success each time. First time round it was to parents with the 'no support' and a linux OS on them. We even explained at the time what the equipment was capable of. Still got the majority back as people tried using them for stuff like video editing:rolleyes: Second time around, offered just to staff. A few have gone but still got a bunch here. We'd love to send them on one of those africa things but all the companies I've looked at seem very specific as to what they want (P4, 2 years old, etc) If it was a decent, 2 y/o P4 it would still be in service:D

We have an oldish crimping tool, a pair of first aid scissors and a cheap tester. I also have a Fluke OneTouch II for when we want to look flashy for finding sockets on switches, connectivity problems etc:D

I had one of the slightly older units on a trial a while back (cant remeber the model, looks exactly like the one in the link though) It was OK at doing what it says, Internet on the move, using the mobile phone networks. Unfortunatly in our rural location it often found it difficult to get a signal so would half load pages, error out, etc. The unit itself is actually pretty small and light, roughly the size of an average mobile phone. We didnt use it for anything other than web browsing, although I'm not sure if it was just the unit we had but the screen seemed very dull to me even though it was on the highest setting it could get. Hope this helps Steve:)

Hi all! Just a bit of info for those running IP phone systems (and a bit of a shameless plug:D) Ever since we had our phone system put in (3+ years) we have had some awful logging software that could barely keep track of what was going on, being cash strapped as we always are I decided to write my own. It runs from a MySQL database and connects to the phone system over IP. Unfortunatly we only have a single Mitel 3300 here so I cant say if this works with other systems (or even with other 3300's) so if anyone feels like trying it out for me, below is a link to the software: BaccyNet Networks (UK) Comments/suggestions welcome. Steve:)

@somabc - Not to sound too negative here but I think that your plan to achieve MCSE status in a year through self-study is a bit ambitious! I take it you will be working full-time during the year? When will you be studying? On a positive note, doing the CompTIA stuff first is a good idea. They were the easiest certs to get for me and start to get your mind into the whole self-study thing if you havnt done it before. As for the server, I'm currently using VMWare on my home PC with four virtual machines. I've then setup an internal network inside VMWare as well as allowing the server VM out onto the Internet. It does require a stack of memory though if you plan to run that many machines at one time! Hope this helps

@DanW - The converter leads we have were supplied by the installers when they setup the system so I cant say where they got them from. The link tom suggested looks very similar to what we use. Basically RJ45 to a standard BT plug. Luckily this thread reminded me to change the clock on the phone system, would have gotten that in the neck come Monday:D
-
@DanW - We currently have the faxes piped through the analogue card provided in the Mitel. We have two fax machine connected to that by running Cat5 to their location and have converter leads on either end of them. @Ric_ - Never had much trouble with the Mitel. It seems to be one of those ones where once your on a software release that is stable, you dont change it unless you get problems later on;)
-
I might be wrong but I dont think a PS2 cable is going to work very well (or at all as your experiencing) at those lengths. Are you able to swap to USB perhaps? (for long runs, a USB to CAT5 convertor may work)

We have a Mitel 3300 system running about 60 ish extensions. All IP based apart from the external connection which is a standard ISDN30. The Mitel has been in for about four years now, originally put in my Marshland Telecom (MTL) and is still supported by them if theres something I cant do. We also have some custom call logging software (written by me:D) for monitoring it.

I'd love to say I learnt something new this week, but been trying to sort out what I'm going to do without an exam centre I can get to:confused: (hopefully mr russdev will allow this excuse, its much better than the dog eating my homework:D)

I too would be interested in seeing how they scored my job, there just seems to be so much more I'm doing than that job description says, maybe thats where I'm going wrong....

Thanks for that Jay, I did think about asking our school if they would become one but I dont think it would go down too well I agree it would be nice for the LA/school to help out techs that want to increase their knowledge, I've always come up against opposition for it though hence why I have been doing it by myself.

Hey all! I was emailed this morning with the bad news that ActiveTalk Academic (a Prometric testing centre) has closed so my training provider cannot book my exam retake. This has completly screwed my plans and also my progression through the course (especially after the Microsoft Pearson thing) Does anyone know of a Prometric centre in Norfolk? Only ones I can find are a bit too far for me (transport anywhere from my very rural location is a bit of an issue:() Anyways just thought I'd share that wonderful bit of news!

We have a group that we add staff to when they need to get files from students areas. They only have read access and usually get taken out of the group when they've done. It does state in our AUP that files etc can/will be monitored, it just doesnt say who does it:)

I tested out an internal shoutcast radio a while ago as people here were interested (note the WERE:rolleyes:) I had an embedded flash player that connected to the stream, think it used something from windows media but I cant remember. It meant that we could have a link on the intranet that the kids could click and it connected straight away.

I went a bit creative when I was helping out a local primary, I Photoshopped together a few pictures from around the school, faded them slightly and then added the school logo over the top. Only the pupils got this whereas the staff got a plain colour.

The little piece of paper says I'm an IT Tech:D Good to know county got something right regarding my job.... @Cullingsh - I know what you mean, I love the wording of the leaflets and such about how everything was evaluated and this is what they came up with. If they actually did that they would find out what we all ACTUALLY do instead of what they THINK we do!

If its to do with hacking/cracking or the suchlike its instantly blocked, otherwise its more of a see what a few teachers think and go from there. We use WebMarshal for our content filtering. Does a decent enough job although its not the greatest in the world.
