We have the Espresso software running at the Primary. As the majority (I said majority, not all before someone complains ) of schools here have an LEA provided proxy server, the Espresso software seems to be an 'add-on' module for it. Incidentaly whilst watching the LEA guy set the proxy up for Espresso, I did see the number of open source software being used to update it and such, so I dont know how hard it would be to run without the proxy. And as others have said, it gets updated regularly. The proxy is filling up rather rapidly in fact. I wonder what it does if it gets full......

Theres an option to lock the control panel in HP's Web JetAdmin. It's a free download on their website but cant say for sure where as we got it a while ago. Also allows you to config a bunch of printers at once 8)

Basically any line that has a ; before it is treated as a comment. From the code that you have posted, I think what you are after is: Hopefully that should fix the problem. Steve

Hi there and welcome to the wonders of education IT!! Can you attach the kix script itself to a post please? I think I can see where it is going wrong but with the formatting of the forum it's making it a little hard to read. Also I'm not sure if that is all the script being shown or if theres more. Steve

At one school, we setup a rule on a WebMarshal webfilter to display the AUP before students can use the Internet. This displays once each day with a link to a printable version if required. Many of the kids have gotten used to it (only been setup recently) but there are still some that ask us "why have you blocked the Internet?"

Hi there! The strip seems to be called 'Record Selectors' in Access 2003. To Remove it, right click the small box in the top left hand corner when in design view and select properties. Select the All tab and scroll down until you see Record Selectors. Change this from Yes to No and you should be set. Not sure why you'd need them (never used it myself) but I'm sure someone else on here can enlighten. Hope this helps Steve

I've got some hanging around here , how many where you after? They dont have the green clips on the back though so they would need gluing onto the case.

we bought a HP 5550N as well for our technology dept. Admittedly it did go wrong within a few months but this was due to misuse rather than a hardware fault. HP did a great job of getting us going again. Well worth getting the extended warranty on these things, I'd hate to know how much replacement parts are for it Personal opinion I think photos are better on a high quality inkjet although an A3 full colour page just seems more bright and vibrant on a laser. Again personal opinion

.202 only here. Madasafish broadband in rural Norfolk. All others time out.

Bit of an update for you all. Recently one of the schools has changed webfiltering. The previous system was Symantec Web Security(hosted by the CC) to Bluecoat(also hosted by CC). Didn't think this would make much difference to the WSUS situation but thought I'd give it a try anyway. Got in this morning and it seems to have been sync'ing fine with Microsoft. So this highlights that it was the web filtering at the county end that was blocking it for some reason. Hopefully when I'm next in to the other school, I can check and see if they are sync'ing (which it shouldnt as they are still Symantec) Just thought it may be of interest to any other techies (mainly in Norfolk) Now I've just got to sift the 900+ updates it seems to have found

Congrats! I'm currently studying 70-290 myself. How did you find the questions? As for the backup question, I don't know (havnt got the book nearby) but I think it was incremental. Don't quote me on that though!

We had this kind of issue a few years back when the council had recently changed our router. For some reason the router felt the need to intercept all the Ghost packets through it's 10mb/s card and then let it pass to the machines. Got quite interesting as the router began getting bogged down with it all thus losing the Internet Dont know what they did to fix it but it doesnt do it anymore, might be the same problem for you?

No work for me this summer (the wonders of an ever changing contract) This will be the first year though that I havnt been in over a summer holiday. May pop into the primary in the last week to deploy some software but it's not an urgent thing. I can see hte line of techies wishing to hurt me from here

The nearest one that I can see is in Cambridge but there may be a closer one. The website doesnt allow you to map nearest centres, just the whole of the UK. I had been using the Vue centre in Norwich for a while now, hopefully they may take up Prometric as well but I'm not sure. May wing them an email this afternoon and see what they say.
-
I thought this may be of interest to all those who are self-studying for Microsoft exams (like me ) Microsoft have signed a deal with Thomson Prometric that allows only them to run Microsoft exams. Link to article below for more detail: http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2007/07/11/microsoft_pearson_vue_prometric/ My biggest problem with this is the fact that my nearest Prometric centre is at least twice as far as my nearest Vue centre (which is already far enough), meaning even more time off work (which is bad enough already) and the fact it's gonna be even harder to get a decent day/time as there are less centres around. What's your views on this? I for one am a bit stuck as I paid up front to a training provider so I'm actually going to have to make the travel regardless of if I can or not or lose the money. Just means instead of half a day off it will be a full day (may be a good thing of course )

I tried Hamachi but it wont even complete the first setup as it cant connect to the hamachi website. Strange considering that LogMeIn was working at the time. Incidentaly LogMeIn has been reporting that it is available during the day but when I try to connect to it, it times out. It also randomly goes offline during the day but comes back late in the evening. @craiglay I've noticed the gateway IP addressing too. And to make it even worse, there are a whole bunch of them! Like you I can connect to my home web server but anything above this is a no-go.

Thanks for the replies! The high school used to have neoteris and it was working fine but as we were only testing it before rolling it out to students, the school decided to pull the plug. I would have an ADSL line brought into the primary but I think there may be cabling issues as to get the LEA/CC broadband, BT have put up a radio mast next to the school and are relaying the signal a fair distance away. This kinda gives me the impression that ADSL may not be in their area!! I did notice last night that however they are blocking LogMeIn, it is allowing it through during the night, so as long as the school can wait til 10PM for any fixes, it'll be fine :-) I had a look at various VNC systems but many of them require the client to know the IP address of the VNC server (i.e. the school) again this is not something that the LEA would give me so thats another bang against the wall with my head. How hum, if only I could convince the high school (and the primaries for that matter) to join together for IT support my problems would be solved, but it is seriously doubtful as it stands at the moment. Again thanks for the advice guys! Steve

Here comes the wonders of the LEA though. I cant VPN as that would require changes to the router to allow it - LEA's router and they will not change settings on it for anyone Unfortunatly it's the same with remote desktop. I have been told that I can have a permenant link made between the two schools but this is of no use to me as most of my work is done away from the schools and also the high school doesnt want the 'burden' of supporting the primary. Yup tis a wonderful world!

Hey all! Not sure if this is the place for this question but here goes anyway. I support a primary school and have setup a remote access system to allow me to go into their server and make changes/fix things when requested and it would be too tricky to guide the school staff through. I have recently been using LogMeIn Free Edition to gain access at that way it allowed me to not only make changes from my other school but also from home (for those times a fix needed to be performed when no-one is there) but recently I seem to have lost access to the website from the other school (Access Denied) and also the remote agent at the primary loses connectivity for most of the day, thus making it useless to me. Does anyone know of a simple yet secure soloution to allow remote access onto a server? I'm after something that will allow access from either a school or home and if possible, does not require a user at the schools end to initiate the connection. Oh and before anyone mentions it, I am aware of the need for security and thus the blocking of LogMeIn but this is kinda crucial to my job! Many thanks

I still cant quite understand why they dont support such a tool in schools. I know they have their own 'Microsoft Patch Management' but I dont see why I should ask a school to pay for something that can be done free! @j17sparky - I would bypass the cachepilot apart from the fact the County/BT router is set not to accept any connections except those from the cachepilot itself, making things rather tricky. So as soon as any data passes out of my servers, its into county hardware @big-jon - I would email them back but it's a waste of an email as I'd still get the same response. When I had a problem with a cachepilot a few months ago, their helpdesk asked ME what a cachepilot was?!?!? Hopefully as SUS's lifetime is ending soon they may just fix the problem for me but I dont hold out much hope! If anyone happens to know what/if there is a bypass port on a NCC/ICT Solutions cachepilot and what port number it is, please let me know Thanks for the replies Steve

Hello all! I'm an IT Technician for both a high school and recently a local primary as well. I joined the high school after being there as a student, then going to their college 'site' and then managed to get a job there. All in all I've been with them nearly 10 years I was at one point a single person IT dept at the school just after I joined as the rest of the IT staff left (maybe it was something I said???) but things have settled back to three of us there now. The primary is not part of the high school so that is my own little area there (I'm the whole IT dept there!) I found this place whilst trying to fix a problem with WSUS and our school proxies. Glad to see theres a place for all us school IT peeps to share ideas and storys

Yeah the setup was a bit of an interesting one but there is way too much curriculum software on those machine to gut it and start again. The windows updates website works it's just a pain to go round and do it on each machine just because ICT Solutions have blocked it! The Cachepilot does not have authentication turned on so it cant be blocking it because of user access. And hi fellow Norfolk techie! I've been with the high school in my sig for 5 ish years now but have recently taken up the Primary school as they were 'desperate' for someone to sort out the mess they had! It's becoming quite hard to setup some of these things though as it's a flip of the coin as to wether it's blocked by ICT Solutions or not. ho hum, thanks for the replies anyways guys. Steve

Hi all! First off, congrats on the site! I have been looking for a website where other school IT people can share ideas so you may see a lot of me here Backround: I have recently taken over support of a local primary school's IT systems from Norfolk County Councils ICT team. I've been trying to set the whole network up so that it requires as little day to day admin as possible and even can be managed remotely. The problem: I have installed WSUS 3 onto the schools server as they need a LOT of patches from Microsoft and it would take me too long to do it manually (and cost the school too much for me to be there doing it). I have followed the installer and it seems to be setup and I was greeted with the config wizard. I fill in all the info up to the point where it asks to download the data from Microsoft detailing all patches/updates/etc. Whenever I try and do this, I get a HTTP error that then says the client actively refused the connection. I have checked that the proxy details are correct and all other information is fine but it seems to stumble here. The proxy server is an E2BN Cachepilot(Linux box with a nice webpage set). Unfortunatly the proxy is owned and run by the county council so changes to it are next to nil. I have emailed them regarding the issue to be told "we do not support WSUS as it is untested and unproven. If you wish to do this, you go it alone" Does anyone have ANY ideas/tips/tricks that could get this to work? Just to check that my config was right, I have tried installing at another school and at home. I can get a connection at home but the other school (also NCC proxy server) does not connect. If I cant get it to work then I cant. It's just infuriating that something as useful as WSUS cant work behind an NCC proxy. Any help greatly received and sorry for length of post Steve IT Techie
