  1. Yep sounds exactly like my problem! Not happened for about 10 days now
  2. Just came across this post. Been happening here for 3 months, prob about once a week. It's on two file servers one R2 one standard. Thought it was just my network. Just been pulling DNS thinking it was the cause. Will try some of the fixes here Love edugeek
  3. Just had a lad come in couldn't save a PowerPoint. Same thing hit browse button nothing happens. I opened up an office file from the shared area then went back to the PowerPoint he was then able to save
  4. DITTO I thought I was going mad. But now I am. It's becoming a real pain. Like you I have their home drives set as the default save location. I have removed every policy that affects office. Still getting the problem but randomly. Same student can be fine on one PC but get the problem on another. NB there has been no windows or office updates. No GPO changes either. I reimagined a laptop, gpupdate. Login as a students and they cannot save. I did find starting word and saving a new document seems to kick excel into life or a few users. As a sort of work around, I've created a blank excel doc in the shared area. Students copy that to their home drive they an then edit and save to hearts content. A few times I have deleted the local copy of their profile and got them to log in again. This seems to do the trick but again only on a few. No hard fix as yet. I have imported the policy settings into a blank new policy and removing setting and retesting as I go. No joy yet. It started happening to my students about a week ago and seems to spread. Antivirus hasn't picked anything up. Not sure if it's related to this problem but I have a small computer suite that when a student logs in and starts any office application it randomly blue screens the PC. I have used a student account logged onto every PC stated office. Some blue screen others don't. I then cleared the profiles, loges in with same account same thing happens but maybe different PCs. I have reinstalled Office, updated all PC drives. All with no real firm pointers to what's causing it. I'm using Office 2013 pro 32bit on win 7 PCs If I stumble across anything I'll let you know All the best
  5. P2Ved my sims server in 2009 onto VMware been backing up with Veeam every since then. Veeam is a great bit of software. We back up to a 14TB server and use Veeams copy backup to copy to another disconnected building.

  7. Cheers steveking love the pseudo code [emoji3] Found out today they are desperate to write to excel. The IT teachers raised it with each other 1 week ago. Oh but silly them didn't think to speak /ask me. I need to put a few coins in the crystal ball! It's is ocr nationals, not even seen the exact requirements so if it is just text files my foot is going down with a firm hand tomorrow
  8. Cheers Bladedanny I did mention csv to them but they are wedded to the idea of excel [emoji37]

  15. As featured says be prepared for 3 rd party breaks. In 2009 I renamed a 2003 domain. Went well apart form the odd bit of software. I have cloned my domain into VMware with exchange 2007. Again most of the domain went well. Exchange stuffed up. Good luck
  16. I've been looking at alternatives to my meru captive portal. So been playing with pfsense and untangle. Pfsense very good security, could not get captive portal to work (my lack of knowledge). Very good logs etc. installed untangle yesterday as a matter of fact. Easy install 10 minutes after the install I had my captive portal working and NAT img between network. Easy to configure web filtering and firewall. I will continue to play with pfsense but for ease I'd go untangle. The bits I need are free but there are paid for modules if you need more bells

  20. Hi I have a sever 2012 domain, windows 7 clients Been trying to find how to hide "uninstall or change a program" on windows explorer. I have found a few link which say use the GPO here User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel -> Programs My GPO's end at Control Panel so don't have the "programs" bit. The GPO to "Prohibit access to the control Panel" is enabled and working but the "uninstall or change a program" seems to get round it Any help would be great
  21. To get Successmaker 6 (online version) to work. Its the most god awful web based program I have ever had the misfortune to support. We have the server based version which was also a pain in the a..... The school decided to go to online version as it was supposed to the be latest / greatest product. Randomly we get error messages about incorrect version of java. We update to the latest java, does it work not a chance. I have other PC on much lower versions of java than Pearson say and it still works. Maybe I hit the nail on the head with the word Pearson. They should not be allowed anywhere near software Rant over....Oh and the support is rubbish Anyone get this consistently working
  22. Good god 5 years! I'm lucky if I can get agreement on a month plan. Not joking either
  23. I was having so many profile issues with the kids on our laptops. We are mostly laptops, 500 of the things. In the end I completely removed any profiles from stunners, no roaming, no mandatory, no nothing. Everything is redirected, home drive etc so no real point having them. Been 2 years now never looked back. Yep the first logon onto the device is slightly slower. But the next login onto the same device is lightening. I have a scheduled task with delprof2 to delete the local profiles, that get created, over two weeks old.

    PHP on a stick

Any of you guys use 'php on a stick' for students? Teacher just asked me if he could have it for students. Spent ages setting up a internal webserver with MySQL and PHP but wont go there....... Seems neat idea, just don't want the little darlings bringing in nasty scripts to plug directly into my network. Any thoughts ?
