Hi all Been thinking (sorry) anyway - the oldest 2 grandkids are often on their "pads" - ipads much to my disapproval! anyway - they are set up for kids - I think - mostly but what they actually go on is sort of up to them The younger is 6 and autistic - so he has unexpected reaction to some rather exteme stuff (horros cartoons etc - but if very good at not going on it when we say (we think???) the oldest is 11 and - well, approaching teenage so who knows where she will wander?? so I was thinking - we could do with something to at least monitor, and preferably block, websites but it has to work on iPads on the network as well as windows, android, iphones etc etc and not cost loads as they are not here that much and if it all works then maybe we could gently suggest that they use it at home when the opportuniy arises any idea of things that are available at the moment and work?? thanks

reminds me Mrs mikeprice asked me to get Shampoo and Conditioner from Tesco I got there and they didn;t have the right conditioner so I just bought the shampoo which was clearly wrong - it was NOT what she asked me to do when I mentioned this she rolled her eyes - not sure why (bit like the old one can you get some milk - and if they have eggs get 6 so I arrived back with 6 bottle of milk because they had eggs) -
I think you lot are just milking it now this has gone on whey too long

Crumbling schools plagued by leaks and cold, BBC finds
mikeprice replied to LeMarchand's topic in General Chat
There is certainly an attitude that something that is already "broken" can be vandalised further - and that is OK We used to have a problem outside my teachering room - the mortar around the bricks was crumbling in one area - the kids used to gather there and over time they worried away at it so that the brocks started falling out There was also a patch of crumbing plaster in my HOD's room which got worried away at In both cases - once it was fixed the kids left it alone When I was training some of the people on my course were at a school in Wrexham At the time there were several Secondary school in the town and one was due to close soon (ish) and this had been know for a few years - hence no money was spent on mainteneance so thing started falling apart the kids basically demolished bits of the school around themselves and anything even slightly dodgy was just ripped apart unless it was being watched all day Same applies to computer (see I do get back on topic!) - if a laptop is pristine then it will generally stay that way once a letter dissappears from the keyboard then it soon gets more missing keys but the laptops on either side of it normally stay just fine at my last school we had some old laptops that were basically just scruffy - old stickers and generally "stuff" all over them so they just got worse Until I took them out and scrubbed them with alcohol so they looked new I told the kids they were new ones and changed the default browser and windows background and they were thrilled with them! people are weird -

Couple of little stories sorry Firstly - site managers Big secondary school I taught in for many years had one of the SMT as SIte Manager - quite a good Humanites teacher - did a good job on stats then got given the Site Manager job as well as usual after a while they got - against the wishes of the LEA - a proper Site Manager with experience of ding the job properly on proper building sites AKA - no a teacher shortly after he started a disabled guy in a wheelchair was due to start in Year 7 so lots of changes were needed wheelchair access to all building (ground floor only - timetable had to fix the rest), wheelchair friendly doors on all accessible places - and all that quite a lot of work needed over summer LEA contracted it all and got it sorted out with one of their normal contractors on our first INSET day of 2 there was apparently chaos building wise the builders had finished and brought him the forms to sign it off but he didn;t - he insisted on a proper site inspection instead and this wasn;t a teacher they were walking around with - it was an experienced builder and Site Manager - he knew how it was supposed to be done he procuded a snag list as long as your arm and refused to sign the job off the builders insisted that he HAD to sign it off and the snags would be sorted soon he refused - pointing out that several were serious and the contract said whooo - problem - HE HAD HAD THE DAMN CHEEK TO READ THE CONTRACT!!! and - he noticed that - as it was time limited due to the disabled access thingy and start-of-term thingy - someone (i.e. him) had snuk a penalty clause into the thing which he pointed out shows what an experienced Site Manager can do!! Second little story last school I worked in had a flat roof mostly - always leaked - especially the computer room!!!! roofers came in several times a year and charged the school - as mainteneance was a school responsibility - building works above that was the LEA's problem went on for years - fix it - goes wrong - fix it - it goes wrong several times every year no builder would guarantee anything because they were basically patching over work out and rotting structure cost the school a fortune after I left the school had an inspection and it was bad - got forced into an academy - which was to be expected teh academy checked around and applied to the LEA for a grant to re-do the whole roof - which the LEA had been refusing to do for decades Apparently it was a grant that teh LEA were not allowed to refuse so now the whole school has a brand new proper sloping tile roof paid for by the LEA end stories -
I presume it has broken down - which it why it is blue!

Is there a thread for "Compo Face" pictures?? or - for that matters - shameless begging? -
I first saw this in Computer Weekly when I used to be able to get it for free I was horrified at the time and watching this brilliant series just created the same effect Looking at it from an IT point of view I have to comment that the people in trhe company that wrote it have the original specifications (not that interesting) and a log of all changes made to the system and the reasons why THAT should tell a tale! (in the old old days the logs for all this on the system I worked on was on my desk - every single change was logged in that folder!) anyway - lets not go all froggy
-
As said before - first thing is to work out what you want compared to what you currently have and also what you will want in 5/10 years time - which can be difficult things like - do PE need wifi access in order to use devices outside? do you need good access in the sports hall? how many devices in each room - and of what type and doing what what about access to personal devices - do you need some kind of separate connection for them? what about auditing and fault finding what about the system management answer all that lot - plus some more - and you can make a start I would talk to a few suppliers on an informal basis first as they might give you more ideas of requirement - but watch out for the salespeople to"suggest" things that only their system does! anyway - good luck!
-
Yes - Boat Story was great Just finished watching the Post Office scandal - absolutely amazed about the system - and, having designed and written many big IT systems - the details seemed to show some design concepts that the company I worked for would have called unprofessional and incompetent! As Mrs mikeprice comes from a more auditing based background her views were similar but from a different angle I was constantly wanting more details of the database and screens available to Fujitsu staff - and why but lets not get all frog worthy - so best no-one extends this conversation!!!

Good Point we have a single teaspoon and it has "Property of Ramsey Street" engraved on it we have no idea why neither of us have ever watched Neighbours (or whatever Aussie it comes from) and none of our relatives have either It seems to have appeared in my wifes cutlery drawer (before we were married) from a different - but similar - universe where she liked Aussie soaps

when you have a long term problem like that it is very easy to fall into a habit of breathing wrongly i.e. breathing very shallowly and not using your diaphram properly Once this becomes a habit it can take positive action to correct it by carefully watching how you breathe worth looking out for - especially if you are getting short of breath when doing things your should be able to do easy -
Good point - a networked printer is a good idea unless you do most things from a desktop which is fixed in place! I should really work out a way to network ours via a Pi or something but I haven't yet

Makes me glad I don;t work in a school any more!!!! bit worried about when the kids go back next week! -
Before you can decide you need to work out what you want it for for example - we decided that we very seldom NEED a colour printer - so we opted for a cheap Brother DCP-1501 - which is probably superseded by now we decided that if we really needed something in colour then we could do it at work - when we worked - or get it done at the library It is currently well over 5 years old and we have never needed colour if you need colour then you need to decided on what quality you need - and how often you need to print if you need high quality colour prints quite often then an inkjet is the best - but a lot do not have a scanner but inkjets can have a problem if they are left unused for a long time - as a lot of School IT technicians can attest - nd there are quite a lot on here! lasers are good but might be more expensive initially on top of that do you need A3?? in other words - more information is needed

Merry Christmas Everyone!!
