  1. Hi all I have asked about this before but things move on and charity admin moves slower than salary negotiation for "other staff" at a school!! Anyway - the local Food Bank needs 2 - and possibly more - laptops for the staff and volunteers to use They be used as pure laptops - but also as desktops connected to a monitor and with a wired mouse The manager wants new machines and likes HP In reality they will only be used normally for web access to the Trust's web site which does all the work and does all the storage of data they will also use them fro simple stuff on Word and occasionally Published for forms and posters very basic stuff Now - the question is spec. I am sort of out of date - but I was thinking any basic laptop with at least 8 GB memory and 2 slots in case of needing an increase in the future plus a reasonable SSD - size not important as they should not be storing much on there except for quick access to a few commonly used posters and forms - the rest should be on the trust site and/or OneDrive processor - AMD Ryzen 5 5625U or similar screen size - 15 seems to be OK - any bigger would just make it more difficult to carry around something like https://www.ebuyer.com/1535158-hp-255-g9-15-6-inch-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-5625u-6a1u9ea-abu any comments - they are finally thinking of putting to forward for approval (just before I go away on holiday!!!) thanks
  2. We are off on holiday soon we are going on a boat - just a small one - only 11 guests and 3 crew - going round the Scottish Isles There are a couple of canoes on board but it will be getting colders so we will have to be careful not to build a fire in the canoe because you can't have your Kayak and Heat it
  3. Yeee ha Got another one I note that the "usual suspects" on here are refusing to admit they tried it!!!! P.S. if my memory is correct that makes 2 in about 4 years!!!
  4. Hmm - hadn't spotted the date still - maybe the light from the screen to my eyes was moving slowly!
  5. OK OK problem is me and woodwork/metalwork lessons are best not mentioned I was kindof infamous in my year at school for being able to do naff all in them and get away with it I wasn;t actually too bad with the metal - but wood seems to move in mysterious ways when I try to cut or plane it and ends up the wrong shape I do remember making a dice thingy made up of a 6 sided piece of metal with a metal rod through the middle brazed on using a - basically - flamethrower no-one died not even when Brian Pearson had a go!!!! (wonder what happened to him???)
  6. WOW Famous company and product I still have my old one in the garage and it still works - although I am getting rather worried about the safety of it and insist that the grand kids stay inside if I start it up still works fine I was considering sending it to the grand-daughter's Science Fair at her school As she was in Year 6 she wanted something impressive - this would seem to fit the bill but I though an explosion harming several kids might be sub-optimal so we went with a RPi controlled robot that she programmed - more boring I reckon but she was impressed! p.s. grand kids are generally not impressed - you have to steer it through the extension onto the wheels rather than using an App on an iPhone!!!
  7. Just found this They managed to slow light down to 30 mph then some otehr people stopped it completely then allowed it on its way again Mind Boggling! https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2001/01/researchers-now-able-to-stop-restart-light/ Now we just have to persuade the Americans to use SI units and not bloomin' degrees F!!!!!! P.S. pretty sure this isn;t a spoof - but from what I know about light it does seem like it - but apparently not!!!
  8. Just noticed that the Dad Jokes thread has reached page 100 This is a thing that should be celebrated!!!! well done to all contributers - raining the standards (in my case probably not of spelling) since 2016 (first post)

  11. I would like to complain about the above notice Are the seagulls based on Black Headed Gulls or Herring gulls??? or Kitiwakes?
  12. I always felt that that Sun Life advert where the bloke was fiddlg with his binoculars in his conservatory was a bit dodgy I mean - clearly that was not what the marketing department was hoping I was focussing on but I feel that he should not be allowed to have binoculars just me??? or am I just the only person old enough to be watching the telly at the time it is on??
  13. As i help out in a library every Tuesday I have been looking around and found a fantasy series called "Mistborn" cover looks OK - but you can never tell as expected - that library only have episode 4 - 1 2 and 3 have to be ordered from another library it is cheap on Kindle so I have got it on that - I don't have high hopes but I though I would try it
  14. That is hilarious There must be people who can;t make a cuppa because the kettle app is down!!! but also scary! The lights in the house is minor - but scale it up and it becomes patients dying because apps can;t switch machines on in a hospital
  15. Hi all I am doing so work for the local Food Bank as a volunteer and they have a couple of old all-in-one machine that get uses for basic stuff Personally I feel they need chucking but they want to keep them so a couple of other volunteers can use them at home but as Food Bank Pretty much the only programs on them that is needed is Office 365 I was wondering - if I tak ethem back to factory setting - how to I get Office 365 back on them I have obviously done Office of all types before but never this version and it seems quite different so are there an problems I need to look out for and does it automatically recognise the machine or do I need to go onto some sort of admin thingy to re-assign it? and if so how do I do it As you can tell - I wasn;t left with a lot of info about how the previous people have done stuff a usful idiot's guide link would be helpful if anyone has one!!!! Thanks all
  16. That look cheap if it is any good personally I am fine with GIMP for photos but if I needed the rest and needed to use them properly I would check further

  20. I read today England players out in Germany won’t be allowed to vote on 4th July. A spokesperson for the FA said “it’s pointless, they wouldn’t be able to find the box let alone put a cross in it”
