That was my first reaction, but AIUI it's Inflation plus 10% on the *duty* on cider, which is currently something like £25 per 100 litres, which I make to be just under 15p a pint. So this extra 15% (inflation is about 5%) is about 2.5p a pint (but expect your landlord to round it up!)

I thought you were normally only covered third party when driving somebody else's vehicle (with their permission) under your own comprehensive policy? Or is the owner classed as a third party?

You can also get 20% off via Quidco. I did hear of an interesting loophole where you can pay significantly less to join the New Zealand version of the NT, but use the reciprocal arrangements they have to get the same benefits that a member of the UK NT has!

How about making that work the other way round - a message pops up asking them to confirm that they are still using it, and if it's not cancelled after a set period it switches off. A bit like Sky boxes do nowadays.

I ended up in that corner of the graph too. I actually think a hung parliament could be a good thing for the country at the moment. But as a floating voter, I've emailed the three main parties' candidates in my constituency asking for their thoughts on a particular local issue and hinting that a commitment to resolving the issue might help to secure my X in their box on polling day. I worded it as "would you be prepared to make an election commitment to facilitate a dialogue between [various organisations]", so I'm not asking them to commit to anything too heavy, just to raise the issue and get people talking. I sent that on Saturday, only had a reply from the Labour candidate so far, promising to look into it and get back to me.

In general if you're doing chromakey live you'd be doing it through a vision mixer or a DVE unit rather than through a PC. I can't think of any non education type situations where you would need that facility on a PC. Might be worth trying to scrounge/borrow a vision mixer with Chromakey (aka CSO in some circles) built in?

If you were able to get a license to allow ripping, I suspect it would be MCPS (Mechanical Copyright Protection Society) which would issue it. They may be able to advise.

I'd always suggest taking the picture in the highest quality available, and then resample it later. It's much nicer to have a full 10mp image to crop a section out of than once it's been resized. I'd probably go as far as saying keep the original files on a DVD or something so you can go back to the source image if you want to use it some time down the line.

I think the argument is that if you edit *some* posts, then it could be inferred that anything which hasn't been edited must be endorsed (or at least approved of) by the site, whereas if you don't edit anything you can argue more effectively that posts are owned by and the responsibility of the poster. Not sure if that stands up in a court of law though!

You could then argue that any fool knows that the University of Sometown's site would be a .ac.uk and your .co.uk wouldn't be their site. Dunno how successful that would be though!

You can but I've never found it that effective - you still end up with massive files compared to taking the image out and resizing it in a proper graphics program and reimporting it at the correct size.

But that just applies JPEG compression and removes bits that have been cropped. If somebody takes an image which is 3000px wide and scales it down to fit, the Word document still contains the 3000px version - it doesn't resize it, just drops the quality.

Funnily enough I've just done a talk on this for final year undergrads who have to do this on their dissertations! The trick is that you need a Section Break everywhere the page numbering scheme changes, so your page 3 needs to be preceeded by a "Section Break - Next Page", which you'll get from the Page Layout tab on Word 2007. (Insert menu if you're in 2003). Then, go to Insert > Footer and on p1, delete any page numbers that are there. Scroll down to p3, and in the footer turn off the "link to previous" which you'll find on the ribbon. Then insert your page number, select it and go to the "Format Page Numbers" option which is on the pulldown you get from the "Insert Page Number" button. Now you can set it to start at 1. If you've got any other section breaks in the booklet, perhaps to change orientation, you'll need to check the footer either side of them as it's likely to be wrong.

We went to Gadget Show Live last year and found it thoroughly disappointing. There was nothing really innovative or new on show. I didn't think it was worth the money.

What irritated me was that she thinks that it's the sat nav's fault for taking her on a road with a level crossing, not her fault for not knowing/reading how to use it. It's a perfectly legitimate route!

Apache will run as a specified user, and by extension PHP uses that same user. You can find this from phpinfo() - often something like 'nobody'. For PHP scripts to be able to read and write, that user has to have rights (using the standard Unix chmod and chgrp type permission change commands) to the files/directories concerned.

The odd mistake I can live with, but I think I gave them a fair crack - ordered two pairs, each was faulty in a different way (one pair had the lenses swapped, the other didn't have the tint I'd ordered). Sent them back with a covering letter categorically stating (twice) that I wanted a refund and not an exchange, as I didn't want to wait another couple of weeks. Obviously as the goods were neither as ordered nor fit for purpose I was clearly entitled to a full refund. So, of course (having taken my custom elsewhere) they sent two new pairs, and was a pain to get that resolved.
