Can anybody check whether this site (for Forensic Science courses at the Uni I work for) gets through your filters for me please? http://www2.hud.ac.uk/sas/forensic/index.php I'm wondering whether the entries in the navigation links to pages about "Drugs Crime", "Firearms Crime", "Abuse of Harmful Substances" and "Sexual Offences" (all perfectly innocent pages about the things you can detect with forensic science) in the Research section might cause filters to block it if they see several links to things which might possibly be dodgy together? Obviously this is the sort of site which sixth form students could legitimately need/want to access, so it would be a problem if filters blocked it! Cheers Steve

Well you're entitled to your opinion, but I think it's a load of rubbish Most people who take the test in an automatic (such as myself) having struggled to get to grips with manual transmission will have been taught in an automatic and will have been taught how and when to use the car's gears and other factors which are unique to driving an automatic such as controlling creep etc. People who passed in an automatic are probably much safer driving one than somebody who passed in a manual and decided they wanted to get an automatic car. Personally I changed from learning in a manual because I was having difficulty at junctions and getting in a flap with changing gear, holding the car at bite, observing traffic waiting for a gap, stalling, starting again etc. Taking most of that out of the mix means that I can concentrate more fully on observing traffic and making safe decisions (yes I know that these things become second nature for many drivers, but it wasn't clicking for me). It could be that a change to a different instructor in a manual and I would have picked it up, but I was getting so frustrated I changed to an automatic. I have no regrets about only being able to drive an automatic, and the state of the snarled up, stop-start roads we drive in these days, I find it difficult to understand why people would actively want a manual for day to day use, other than familiarity.

There is a PRS/MCPS joint license for podcasts Podcasting which the lack of a similar license from PPL makes a mockery of, if it is also needed.

I'd be inclined to try and normalise this a bit so that they're selecting the book details from a list somewhere - maybe start with the author search and then drill down to present a list of titles. That way you can store each of the reviews as relating to a particular book, so you don't get dozens of reviews of each Harry Potter novel and no easy way to aggregate them because they've all given the title in a slightly different way. You could either try and export a listing from your library catalogue, or if you want to be a bit more sophistocated, Amazon's API is pretty handy for this kind of thing.

Depends whether you want a straightforward NAS, or one that's actually a little linux box and can download things for you when your PCs are turned off. I have a synology which does the latter and is very nice and hackable

External HDDs are very sensitive about getting the right number of volts. Mate of mine had both a laptop (with 19V PSU) and a HDD (12v PSU). Both PSUs had the same plug on. He did the inevitable, and mixed up the adapters putting 19V into the hard drive and fried it. He took my advice to replace with a bus powered model so he couldn't do that again!

For a site I help to manage (non work) I use a linux app called ftpcopy which is sitting on my NAS box, and just copies down files which have changed in the last 2 days, and mysqldump to take a copy of the db. Running both daily, I get a full copy of the site, always up to date. I probably should say that this is my belt and braces version of making sure that we're not screwed if the backup somebody else reckons to have set up turns out to be rubbish!

I think that on many forums the poster:lurker ratio is quite low too. Of course on many forums the troll: poster ratio is a lot higher than here, which is why the OP's contributions always stick out like a sore thumb as they're so unusual (and blatent!)

We had some plonker test a Y power cable with one end still plugged into a PC.

Excel and its Fill Down option is quite handy for making batch files like that, copy and paste the lot into Notepad and find/replace on the tabs to get rid of the gaps.

There is the argument (and IANAL) that if it isn't available on DVD then no harm has come to the copyright holder. You haven't denied them a sale (because they weren't selling it), and so the damages would be precisely nil.

Just been called to a room where somebody is having trouble getting the microphone on a lectern to work. Which was strange because I didn't think there was a mic in the room. "Ah, I see the problem - that's not a microphone, it's a light" Still don't know how I kept a straight face!

I think the difference with here and Facebook is that with the latter you're communicating with people who (in the main) you already know offline or through some other medium. Here, you're communicating with total strangers, many of them using pseudonyms (nothing necessarily wrong with that) and some who appear to just be here to troll and "flame" people (see what I did there?) without making much of a contribution to the main business of the site. One site I know of changed its policy a number of years back and required all members to have an account in their own name, verified by using their work (etc) email address. Seemed to focus the minds of some of the more troublesome posters into taking more time to think before they posted. If this is a "professional" site, maybe it's something that could be considered here?

That's a very good point actually, I've got some footage which is in .mpg which I think came off a Sony Camcorder, with Premiere doesn't want to believe contains sound. I've had to convert it to wav in Super and hope that the lipsync doesn't break when I import both seperately and link them.
