And the candidates/their agents get to look at all the spoiled papers. This is, according to a "NOTAP Protest Vote Party" candidate (they were going to call themselves the None of the Above party, but that's not allowed, apparently), worth the deposit alone

I would argue that somebody who has made an active decision that none of the candidates on offer represent their views sufficiently to get their support is much more engaged with the process than somebody who votes for $party every four years simply because they're a lifelong supporter. We need a "none of the above/re-open nominations" option so that people can register a non-vote whilst not being classed as lazy.

Happily I find that we have a TUSC candidate standing here, who seems to be more or less an independent, and seems to have something about her. While she plans to continue as a councillor if re-elected, she won't be pocketing both salaries/allowances, unlike the Lib Dem candidate who would have got my vote but for that. So that's resolved my "I've had enough of Labour / I like the local Tory candidate but have issues with Tory policies nationally / I like the Lib Dem policies but couldn't support the local candidate" dilema nicely.

It's kind of by invitation at the moment, because we're having to keep an eye on server disk space as it's really difficult to guess how much we're going to need, and because by keeping it small and for friends of friends it doesn't need moderating. We're not really geared up to scaling it up to the whole world getting involved at the moment, but I can PM you a link if you want to take a look or get involved

Not tried that exactly, but I am doing a "Project 365" which is where you take a picture of something every day for a year, mainly as an exercise in improving my photography skills, and the challenge of it. Over the Christmas and New Year period and friend and I built a website to support it, after another friend suggested it in late December. He writes ASP, I write PHP so there was a programming challenge involved in getting the bits I'd done to talk to his bits. Over times he's added things like a forum, I've added RSS feeds and a facebook app and it's quite a nice little social network - currently we've got about 30 people, all friends of friends of friends actively doing a project.

Basically because Pontop is still transmitting analogue services and SD Freeview, they've had to find another frequency for the HD service. In order to find a spare frequency they may have had to reduce the power or restrict the power in certain directions where that frequency is in use for other services. I don't have any details to hand on whether that is the case for Pontop, but I've heard that in some places there are people who can see the mast out of the window but can't get the HD service because there is a null in their direction to protect another transmitter's service. The frequency allocation plan for the whole country was drawn up some 40 or so years ago with just 4 channels in mind, so adding an extra 6 Freeview SD multiplexes plus HD is a bit of a stretch in some areas! Once the Tyne Tees area undergoes Digital Switch Over, Freeview services move to the frequencies which were carrying analogue broadcasts, at a much higher power. So if you can't get the HD signal now, you will be able to in a year or so.

Pontop is live, but with the "interim" HD lash-up rather than the proper full power service.

You don't say which area you're in - if you can name the transmitter you use it would help to be more specific. AIUI in areas which have had analogue switched off, the HD transmissions are at the highest power they will get to and should be available from relay transmitters. In areas which haven't had DSO yet the HD multiplex is an afterthought, just from the main transmitters. Often a frequency which could have high powered transmission without interfering with other services in other areas wasn'tavailable, so HD may be available, but at a lower power than the other freeview services, so if you're in a fringe area it's dubious whether you'd get it.

Given that he clearly doesn't understand the meaning of slander (clue: slander is verbal, libel is written/published) then I have to take his comments with a pinch of salt.

I've found Super pretty good for transcoding video, it can handle flv as well SUPER (scroll right to the bottom to get the download link, not the AVS banner ad at the top of the page!)

Or start with a a pretty basic account and add rights as tasks require them, temporarily if necessary.

This is the problem I've got - I think the Tory candidate would get things done locally, but I have issues with the Tory policies nationally. Conversely I think a lot of what the Lib Dem manifesto has to offer is good, but the more I find out about the local candidate the more I dislike. Particularly the fact that she's also up for re-election to the council and plans to be both an MP and a councillor. She was on a webchat earlier today on the local paper's website and revealled, having been asked awkward questions, that she intends to take the salary/allowances for both jobs, despite the fact she openly admits she can't fully do both and will have to make compromises if council meetings and events clash with debates and votes at the Commons. As such, I'm now a floating voter again.

I had to resit my theory because it ran out and yes, it was a pain (and an expense), but it was amusing to get a higher score on the hazard perception than my instructor who did a check test a week or two before, and only just scraped a pass (although at a higher pass mark)!

Cheers for that - tbh the bigger problem is that the copier doesn't give you any useful information about why things have failed so you can troubleshoot it logically. Took quite some time for us to realise that Win7 was the problem and it wasn't some generic config/network issue.

If the terms of the warranty are "Return to Base" then it's generally at your expense AFAIK. Remember that consumer law differs to that covering business to business transactions/contracts.

We had some real issues getting our Konica Minolta copier to save scans to a share on a Windows 7 box, to the extent that we gave up and set up a share somewhere else. We think it's to do with changes to authentication under Win7, but with the Konica not wanting to log or report any diagnostic clues more specific than "the job was done improperly", who knows.

Begs the question "Why?" - on both counts.

The other way to do it rather than using an image map is to open the map in Photoshop, save for web, and then use the slice tool to cut the image into smaller ones, with each of your hotspots being a separate square. Then when you save you'll get an HTML page, containing a table, and a folder full of pictures. You can then make the pictures that you want to be links into links.

Tell me about it. I was driving on a country A road yesterday, in the opposite direction to a large number of cyclists. Suspect it was some kind of race, but it hadn't needed the road closing. I lost count of the number of times I had to take evasive action to avoid a pillock in a car coming towards me on my side of the road for an overtaking manouvre he hadn't got room for, rather than waiting on his side of the road behind the cyclicsts for a safe gap. The reason emphasis is placed on speed is simply that it's easy for technology detect without much human input.

The fact that those Dells look similar to iMacs was the reason we went for them. The powers that be had suggested iMacs running Windows exclusively, which is a) an almost criminal waste and b) a deployment headache.

We have Dell Studio One 19 for our student PCs and they're excellent.

There is nothing stopping the speed limit being shown on speed camera signs. There are several showing 30 near me. In fact, this should be mandatory in my opinion, if the Government wants to prove that the cameras are about slowing people down rather than collecting revenue.
