    Funnily enough I'm going through this right now. I've got to get 3 quotes and I have no intention of purchasing from 2 of the companies simply because: 1) the company I'm buying from are VERY good and we have a good existing relationship with them. 2) the other 2 companies cannot compete on price. However I've still got to get the other quotes which is a waste of everybody's time and results in phonecalls for weeks afterwards.

    Hi. When staff access and use the SIMS Learning Gateway from their home PC does anyone know if any sensitive data is stored in the PC's cache? We encrypt all staff laptop HDDs but it got me thinking about home PCs and whether staff are using them to access SLG and any other sensitive pupil data. Thanks.

    I was just looking at VBulletin - probably not a good idea for me to fork out £123 for a website that will probably fail! Having a look at phpBB at the moment. Looks a bit tricky to set up though. Thanks.

    Hi. I'm in the process of developing my own website for a forum-based music exchange (which will be completely free btw). However, I'm struggling with the back-end. I would like a forum that works in a similar way to EduGeek, with users able to give rep power, get PM's, etc. etc. Can anyone suggest? Thanks. Alan.

    Hi. I'm trying to get a Windows 7 SP1 computer working in my Server 2003 domain. All Group Policy with exception to Start Menu redirection seems to be working as normal, so I've tried to import startmenu.admx into SYSVOL to see if this template will work. Is this the right thing to do? I just cannot get start menus to redirect. I've tried all the links/fixes in the sticky but to no avail. Should I just bite the bullet and upgrade my DC to Server 2008? Thanks.

    Hi. We change student and teacher desktop wallpapers every fortnight using group policy but on a Windows 7 machine it doesnt seem to work. However I've noticed that when someone logs off the computer you can see the desktop wallpaper appear in the background very quickly. Its almost as though the Win7 wallpaper is overriding it. Anybody else seen this problem? Alan.

    If you create this reg key it might do the trick: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System EnableLinkedConnections = 1 (DWord) I used this key for a quite similar problem so perhaps its worth giving it a go. Alan.

    Thanks. I'm not sure whether its worth the hassle of splitting the mdf file if there isn't a significant change in performance afterwards. I've found a good tool called CardioLog which is helping me to figure out why my SharePoint Server is on its knees.

    Hi. We are running SharePoint 2007 and our WSS_Content_xxx.Mdf is a huge 194Gb. I've already managed to shrink the .Ldf file to virtually nothing but we are still getting performance issues and my thinking is that it would be best to split the MDF file. Does anyone know if splitting the mdf file would increase VLE performance? If so, what is the best method to do this? Also - I would like to find out why the .mdf file is so big - is there software which can explore this file to show the main areas of our VLE which are causing it to be so big? Thanks. Alan.

    Stone are, in a word, rubbish. We took out a 5 year on-site warranty with them 4 years ago. All of a sudden the computers are dying one by one and although they are still covered by warranty, they don't have the parts in stock. This means we can sometimes we waiting a month to change a motherboard/hard drive etc.

    I think there is an option in Group Policy which allows you to "wait for network before logging on". Maybe worth giving this a shot? Could just be a network/speed issue to your sims server.

    They'd like to do it in a sort of eBook reader format, almost like a scrap-book of the student's Graphics work. A lot of their work is done in Photoshop and Fireworks so I'm looking for software that is compatible with these file extensions.

    Hi Due to the high cost of colour printing, our Art Department is interested in software that produces "virtual books", where images can be presented on a screen in a book format and pages turned by clicking and dragging. I have looked into this a bit but have not found anything yet that I feel would work (Most of these programs are for web design). Does anyone know if this software exists? If so, can you please recommend something suitable? Thanks, Alan.

    Iain - lucky for us our VLE is SharePoint and uses exactly the same template as the one for SLG. Therefore it looks pretty seamless

    Have any of you encountered problems with SLG parent provisioning? I'm concerned that our SIMS data might not be 'tidy' enough and that this will result in multiple logons for a parent if they have 2 or more children at the school.

    It sounds like Parents Evening might be the way forward then. I did think of using KeepKidsSafe (a similar program to Schoolcomms) to email/text the parents although you can still never be sure that it would reach the right people. On a similar note Pete: did you rollout the SLG to ALL parents at the same time, or did you phase this out i.e. year 7's first, year 8's second etc.?

    Hi. My school is at a point where we feel that we are in a position to rollout usernames/passwords to parents for SLG. However we aren't sure of the best strategy to do this... Has anyone managed to do this, and if so what method did you use? An idea I had was to handout parent logons at parents evening so we can be sure that the parent has definately recieved the correct credentials. Thanks. Alan.

    I heard that later this year you will be able to remotely install SIMS.net from your Server in a similar way to how you may do with Anti Virus software.
