  1. like the look of the HP elite, add an extra stick of ram for dual channel memory and maybe an SSD down the road and your laughing. we have got a room with similar HP's and they have been great
  2. imo windows defender is a decent package for what its designed to attempt to prevent. PUP's are not viruses and as such it wont "clean" them. alot of virus's require user intervention to get anywhere and even with "good" antivirus still cause problems if only other free antivirus actually concentrated on being an anti virus program rather than everything else they try and do, im looking at you AVG and avast
  3. thats my understanding.
  4. with DHCP you can enable failover to another host. if the client machine was not rebooted after your DHCP scope was turned off it will keep the address it was given until the lease time runs out or the machine is restarted/network stack is and then it broadcast a for an address as normal and if you DHCP is off it wont get an address
  5. capita have released documentation to explain how to set the above up and other measures, received it today (still have gone from not having to to much with the SQL apart from checking the backups to actually putting in extra tweaks, surely this sort of thing should be mentioned at the point of migration)
  6. if you left it off on the remaining DC you will find the event viewer will be full of replication issues and it grumbling about not being able to talk to the other DC
  7. i deleted my reply as i think i worded it wrong 100% sure it was correct:confused: the fact that it logged in means that the other DC is doing its job, the off DC is still going to be listed in AD/DNS unless its demoted.
  8. since our migration of SQL (which has brought all sorts of performance hits......) we are now being advised to setup and run scheduled maint tasks etc which is something we have never had to do before. with the previous version of SQL it was left alone, anyone else found this /threaddrifting
  9. never had any problems with APC have some original smartUPS 700's running some switching and all they have needed is batteries every now and again
  10. icalcs can take a backup of the permissions and then you can copy the data and reapply permissions (or robocopy can do it all in one hit) it can be tweaked as well for better performance if its the same domain (added a 2012DC to the 2008 domain / added 2012DC and retired the 2008DC the permissions should just come across, if its a brand new domain the SIDS for the users and groups will be different and they wont match so you will need to reassign them calcs can be scripted to do this for you)
  11. have you recently been migrated to SQL2012/2014?
  12. Q increase in low end discrete GFX cards which chrome official supports for HTML5 decoding. my ATI HD4550 isnt supported anymore and even with the flag forcing it to be enabled there has been a big dip in performance
  13. SSD is going to give the most performance boost, for pretty much everything in school the average computer has more processing power than needed. people want stuff to load quickly etc and an SSD is the best way to achieve that if the application is on the local machine. and they should be getting cheap enough where a 120GB is viable for most prices ranges. for the record we have kingston V300 in one suite as our 1st area to get them and have been VERY pleased with the performance so far.
  14. does a fresh install exhibit the same symptoms?
  15. still being advertised on the RM site currently, i wonder if this will continue to be the case
  16. fat of the land is an amazing album must go and find it in my box of CD's
  17. let me know how you get on as i would be interested to see if they have changed anything major.
  18. version 14 by request? i keep getting a pop up saying there is a new interface so perhaps it not for general release. tbh we are on 12.3 and appears to work ok and hasnt caused problems for a while so unless there is a great need to change we wont be currently. maybe the site is a little behind, their telephone support always takes ages to get through to ask simple questions like this
  19. you can just detach and reattach the SQL to your VM. we are still running ours on a 2003 / SQL 2005 box dual CPU 2GB ram. iirc the install req's and install guide should be on the mymls section of their support site (login using your license number and postcode) SQL needs full text search and named pipes enabling apart from that its a standard sql install so they have released it with the promised new interface and decided to beta test on pay customer again lol **edit** 12.3 hardware req's Component Requirement Computer and Processor 2.3 gigahertz (GHz) or faster x86 or x64 Dual Core CPU or better Memory (RAM) 4 gigabytes (GB) RAM (8GB is highly recommended) Hard Disk 10 gigabytes (GB) available Server Operating System Windows Server 2008 / R2* Windows Server 2012 / R2** Windows Server Core is not supported *Windows Server 2008 R2 is available in only 64-bit. **Windows Server 2012 / R2 is available in only 64-bit. SQL Server Express or Full Microsoft SQL 2005* Microsoft SQL 2008 / R2 Microsoft SQL 2012 Microsoft SQL 2014 *SQL 2005 express has a 2 gigabyte (GB) database limit. Microsoft .NET Frameworks, including latest Service Packs. .NET 2.0 .NET 3.5 .NET 4.0 .NET 4.5 The table below shows the computer requirements for the client computers accessing the software. Component Requirement Computer and Processor 1.5 gigahertz (GHz) Dual Core CPU or better Memory (RAM) 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM Client Operating System Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 / x64 Windows 8 Browser Internet Explorer 7 + so if and when i get round to upgrading ours will need to migrate myself
  20. Hyper-V server 2012R2
  21. i would be very pleased with those login times, i still cant get 7 to login as fast as XP (the default profile is just bigger) if i trim it too much it grumbles
  22. could be if the teacher has installed the agent / the agent has been installed on the laptop. if the agent hasnt been installed then it cant appear in the agents list, anything on the network at the time can appear as a target iirc (not been using solus 3 that long and the interface is a little odd at times )
  23. dont believe so if the agent is installed from the package created by SOLUS3 its fire and forget so to speak. which is how our staff laptops have SOLUS installed on them from this package, they just appear as the agent polls the server.
  24. around 5.6GB last time i looked last week.
