for each of the vlans i had setup on a 3com switch the default gateway for each vlan was set to the switches IP (no the vlans IP) with routing enabled and DHCP helper on and pointing to the DHCP server

are you mapping user folders to Windows Server?

if you disable network discovery iirc pc's wont advertise themselves. i also hide the navigation bar where "network" is in windows explorer

Hyper-V replica works well but isn't an auto switch over if something breaks, but your machine states will be on another server and just need to be turned on (which for some people who dont have a cluster/san gives you redundancy) for clustering the recommended min of network ports is 3 i think Storage spaces does open up the ability to turn a server into a SAN type device without the massive outlay which has to be a plus

xubuntu using XFCE runs well on lower specced hardware.

iffy profile on the machine/ranger install. we found that remote desktoping to the ranger server causes this exact issue, which is due to the server attempting to open LAN ranger twice and the lock files ect

hyper-v installed as a role with the GUI is still a type 1 hypervisor. we are only running one hyper-v host and one VMWARE virtual Server (which im hoping to change over to hyper-v as Server is limited in the number of server cores it exposes to the guests? i didnt set it up however so meh) the VMWARE web admin is nice however

once you have installed Hyper-V Server all of the management can be done thru the Hyper-V management tools installed on a client. iirc there is a guide published on MS about installing and running it from a flashdrive/memory stick. however the GUI would be easier if there is a problem and requires trouble shooting to fix it (bear in mind you can still remote into a hyper-v server to get at the shell but i find it awkward to use) the production hyper-v host is 2012R2 with a GUI and my test box is hyper-v server as it have alot less power and only i have to use it.

last resort install via script using rundll32 printui? or use that to put the driver onto the machine and then add the Q (if you havent already tried this?)

if the lifebooks had windows 8 on them they will need a bios from Fujitsu to allow 7 to be installed its a complete pain in the arse.

have used the WSUS offline util before in an older primary school which didnt have the infrastructure for a WSUS. WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection worked pretty well, also ideal for an ISO of updates for none internet connected machines

btw if you have are at some point moving to new versions of windows, windows 8 / Server 2012 on 2008r2 KMS host you will need a patch and the same for 8.1 / 2012R2

One of our ageing NAS's is due to be replaced shortly so have been looking at what to replace it with, and the cost of Dell NAS's is rather steep compared to "none storage based servers" are the added features of Storage Server over standard 2012 server worth that much, seeing as the box isnt going to be used for anything other than file serving for users and shared area's. As a normal Server comes in quite a bit cheaper (the price of Dell disks is rather steep as well)

im also due for a renewal and have been tempted by a windows phone. (as the handsets looks well built and they are different) as i only used FB Twitter Instagram and a couple of upnp streaming receivers. so i dont think i would suffer from a limit on apps wish motorola would do an updated razor

smoothwall express has a straight forward interface for blocking and allowing sites and time restrictions also gives you logging and the like as well. runs on the most basic of hardware. they have just released a new version as well.

i dont normally post in response to these things but this is taking the p$ss he is old enough to be responsible for his own actions it is not anyone else's fault he made the decision, from the press coverage he came from a decent background parents wise but something did go wrong in that persons mind
