what hardware are you building the storage around?

R5 if you understand the risks. its still a commonly used setup for reasonable storage sizes and offers decent performance / disk usage. R10 is pretty much the go to Raid level these days. another question to ask is if you have a failure how long can you be without access to the data, if something else breaks in the server or there is an issue with the array i do like the look of mirrored arrays in storage spaces for the flexibility

i was going to suggest Wsus offline as well. WSUS isnt that complicated to setup and only needs a server with reasonable disk space depending on which updates your caching. the biggest headache is making sure GPO is set properly to stop it rebooting / prompting for updates when users are trying to use it

id turn off the auto updating via a MST to stop the annoying pop up

still using ranger on V8 on 2012R2. still nice for doing realtime monitoring and the reporting is good. package roll out still has a place, does very little gpo for us any more. it is an old product which we have pretty much stopped using all of its features but still has some nice bits and pieces which can be setup quickly. its from a time when MS interfaces very painful at times and helped smooth the way for learning network admins havent paid for support for a while and as other have said its pretty much dead imo.

+1 on smart causing the problem, we run 11.4 here which appears to resolve the issue with smart ink...

HESK is what we use here which can plug into AD and email etc and you can customise the look (even in the free version to a point)

most NUC's are under 10W idle and in use might get neat 30W maybe AnandTech | Intel's Haswell NUC: D54250WYK UCFF PC Review review and some power figures of an i5 based nuc. main thing with alot of the reference designs for NUC's is the limited USB ports on some so that is worth checking

looks like settling on an NX3200, does anyone have one of these and can comment on performance and how they have it setup. i see Dell no longer recommend R5 (but still sell the powervault with this supported in the specification) so the other level would be R6 as according to the documentation these are the only 2 levels of RAID supported unless im reading it wrong and the PERC 710 is the same fitted to other poweredge's in which case the card will run other types of RAID. As im trying to find a sweet spot between space/performance/cost...... and R6 is going to need a couple more disks thrown at it to get the performance near to an R5 array.

very good product, the interface is still its weakest link however if you dont need to fiddle with the config too much this wont be much of an issue. you get what you pay for

both are horrid and aged our MFL dept have pretty much ditched it after we moved our intranet to a 2008 box initially and now 2012r2.

I believe there are changes coming which in affect mean that schools are responsible for data stored in the cloud. local storage still has its place in schools and imo is still relevant and important, decent storage depending on your needs doesnt always mean £££ need to be spent as others have said your internet connection will need to be rock solid if everything is stored in "the cloud"

if you have a suspected faulty disk i wouldnt bother defragging, run the vendors diag tool and if it shows errors personally i wouldnt use that disk again.

Unjoin your clients from the old domain before killing it of. Then you can script clients joining to the new domain without it failing due to not finding the old domain

our DC is a dual CPU Xeon with 4GB of RAM and R5. so imo anything with a dual CPU and 4GB >> 8GB of ram will be fine if your happy with the performance of the DL360 then the spec of that is fine but just needs to be in a newer box with warranty

just to divert the thread slightly, is the latest installation guide and install media available through supportnet? as i have been looking for a little while and have not found anything.
