We re-direct everything incl AppData and have no issues. initial login circa 30 seconds subsequent logins 12-18 seconds. One thing that comes to mind is the GPO structure. Have you got alot of other policies being applied which require processing following the folder re-direction policy ?

Honestly no great secret keep doing what you are doing, get as much experience as you can as although qualifications are useful for getting better jobs in the future but still not a must in most places, hands on experience is worth much more IMHO also find a particular area of IT you enjoy (for me its networking and servers)and find your own USP and keep up to date with whats going on in the IT industry.

I would speak to the HT or your LM as they will likely have contacts and I'm sure would be happy to put you in touch. They may even give you time to go and help out. Most councils have a scheme which allows you to volunteer for x amount of time per year whilst still being paid. just a word of caution though don't get dragged into being free support for life.

Hi Guys having the same issue ! was working the other week now 90% of computers reporting invalid licence and preventing office from working. can install keys but not activate via online or proxy! any ideas ?

it think its in the region of £50 if you have an EES agreement but thats an estimation it was def less than i thought it would be !

24 Gb will be ok just ensure you set the Max Ram used in SQL otherwise it will chew through anything you have available. We have a lot of RAM as we do a lot with SCCM and wanted to have plenty for future projects and expansion. Ours runs on Hyper-V really well

It's really good (takes a bit of getting used too) but i find it worth while as SCCM also does a lot of other stuff too (we use the endpoint protection) and software centre so staff and students can install programs if they need to (before we re-image again etc) would recommend a server with a high spec to get the most of it. ours has 64 gb of RAM and runs on SSD Disks with bulk storage being on SAS 10k drives

Hi all, sorry to jump in but I'm in negotiations with our LA to do this very setup. does anyone know how it works (As in the firewall requirements can we just open up 443 for the remote apps or do we need to allow rdp as well through the firewall?) i think we may need a vpn in the loop first to add further security as sims traffic is going to be vulnerable i'd imagine??

I can second that ! We have the 28 port Fibre AT-9000/28sp as our "Core" (All fibre comes back to this) then use a NETGEAR ProSafe GSM7212F-100NES for routing which is an L2+ switch. Both cost less than £2k and work really well. Network throughput average is around 80mbps on the network with 300 concurrent clients logged in. which considering theoretical max of 1gbe is 120mbps is pretty good imho. at the edge we have HP 1910's and i really can't fault any of it. servers go directly via a trunk of 2gbps to the Allied Telesis and honestly for what we need it works really well. In future when we change our other switches i will buy all Allied Telesis as they offer great value and features In the server Rack each server connects to a HP 1910 (4 x nics 2 in active mode to give 2gbps and the other 2 in standby for resilience)

@danselvey i think your right on the old fashioned front and with only having 200 concurrent users i think you should be fine going down the synology route. Ive also played around with storage spaces and its works really well. i guess it comes down to personal choice and what your most comfortable with and what space is available on your servers etc. From a technical point of view the synology units should handle what your looking to do. i would also give them a call and see what they say. the synology site also has some good info on drive support, device selector etc. and has a great FAQ section which may help you decide.

WD Reds were the ones i had origionally. Although I'm now using the RE Enterprise drives and they are solid for us (Touch wood) also got SSD cache setup to improve performance too. I think it would be a good idea to team the nics as it will help with the traffic and also allow resilience incase of a failure. I am basically looking to do the move and trash off the physical boxes in future but i haven't been able to prove to myself its the right thing to do. Don't forget (sorry if you know this already) that in a traditional server say an R610 or similar you have a tried and tested enterprise class raid controller which is replaceable etc i know that i sound like a server sales rep ( and I'm not I work in a very large High school) but i am fairly cautious. On the other hand their really is no technical reason not to do this as you have HA, Nic resilience, Replication, Good Disks (would recommend changing to the RE Range from experience) and the support of a very large firm. (Synology) i use the RS3614xs+ and find it very fast and reliable. i appreciate its not cheap but for me if i were going to do this (and i may in the not too distant future) i would buy the "Pro" Models you have more expandability and also can have spare disks sat in the unit configured as hotspares or enable a raid 6 array. Whenever i do anything like this i buy the 1or 2 TB disks not the larger 3tb+ as they tend to be more reliable (from experience) and also don't take too long to re-build.

what sort of disks are in the units ? and also are you teaming the nics? its a good idea as synology kit is really good (i have 2 large rackstations used for a few test vm's live data in the form of "Not backed up" to give multiple TB to staff for non essential resources. it works well and i use a 60tb RS for Backups. BUT I have enterprise class disks in there. And in the past have had the iscsi LUN crash and not be able to get any data back. When the LUN crashed i was using Raid edition disks which may have not been the best idea although were listed as compatible. My personal feeling is give it a go but maybe for some data to start... I'm always dubious about moving away from "The norm" but if configured correctly i don't see why not.

Hi there, I'm guessing you are using roaming profiles, check permissions as this is usually the cause. we get this now and again (1 or 2 a week) we have 1800 students and all roaming profiles with folder re-direction. unfortunately windows being windows you will get some corruption but you should not see what you are if the permissions and share access is correct. just installed (Today) Eaton 3kva 5px series ups (Eaton 5PX UPS) with the additional Battery Module and NIC etc. Very Very impressed 9 mins runtime at full load (10 dual PSU Dell R610, Cachebox, 2 HP switches, monitor, 3 synology 12 Bay NAS & dual PSU Broadberry server !) *need to state its not going to stay like this ! i bought x 2 of these and will be load balancing them but had to get everything back online asap as we still have staff in / out for the next few days. hope this helps
