Getting the perfect Start Menu for Student Workstations
strawberry replied to Sam_Brown's topic in Windows
Yah, Hate to say this, but removing ti will be a PITA, your better off rebuilding the clients. Sorry!. As for your icon problems, they'll be coming from one of several places, either all users locally, default user, existing profiles, Or a group policy redirection ( possibly part of a roaming profile?). Have a look around, maybe right click on the icon and see if tehre are any properties taht give it away. also work trying a new account, see if it picks up the icons. Moving foward the best thing to do is to use a gp redirection which will you give you a similar setup to the way ranger controls the startmenu. edit** in fact, you can tack it on to the ranger start menu should you wish! -

important thing is that you use the same standard on both ends of the cable, But also +1 for another patch panel.

you can use a driver pack, but in honesty they make an image bulky and add deployment time. You'd be better off adding common drivers then using somehting like mdt to pillage driver cds. MDt can import all the drivers from one location so things like hp cd's can be a goldmine. You can also use something like double driver to extract drivers from current installations.

They are, but you have to pay a fortune for it and its an unnatural knowledge. Your better off learning using books and training vids and getting real life experience at the same time. It will mean for the next 3-5 years your learning on the hoof but your knowledge will be complete and you'll be considered far more valuable than the experienced or trained guys.

when you created the policy and pointed to the msi file did you point ot the local file ie c:\ msi.msi or the unc path? ie \\server\share\package.msi?

All sorts of loverly stuff, MDT - microsoft deployment toolkit, used to deploy os and applications Hyper v - cluster your virtual servers Appv - Package and then deploy streaming applications to the desktop Dpm - Data protection manager, for backups.

mdt. Get them to do a runas, or script it, they then get a loverly clear interface , do the checkboxes and it'll all install for them. need any help or a demo let me know. Or use appv, again, boring explantion on demand!

£1000 is a lot for a cert that you wont get that much use of day to day , unless you spend a majority of your time setting up switches, routers and network infrastructure. You really might be better of looking at the microsoft courses, Get a decent book (sybex or ms press) and find some training online (cbt nuggets and testout are both good) and crack your way through an ms exam. To start with xp (70-270) or windows 7 (70-680) are both great, the xp exam will likely cover what you do day to day. Once you have those out of the way you can then work towards an MCSA which is bascially a network manager.
