You need to think about what ranger does for you and what you need to replace. Website monitoring for instance doens't come for free. other thing you need to consider is that each machine will need to be rebuilt from scratch, ranger doens't just uninstall!.

Microsoft Deployment toolkit. Allows you to create images from install media, Add the unattend.txt and install software using a nice menu system. It can also upload base images and inject drivers. Makes life so much easier!. It can also be used to install just software, which using run as means your staff can use it.

clean tidy way is to use mdt, then you can add an image to just about any machine by injecting the drivers. takes a day to setup, but makes deployment much easier.

None and generally I dont dish out training on it, I consider it a specific tool the same as an accounting package or graphics package. The fact I can usually figure out how to do basic things in it is irrelevant!. I send any staff that dont know how to use it either to our ict co-ordinator or to there line manager to arrange an evening course.

any operating system that will run a client will work. My suggestion is to use windows fundementals for pcs, a cut down version of xp, you can also use something like steadystate to prepare the client.

rds is the way to go , setup a rds server as a session host, then setup a gateway server and a web server. people will access the rds session over the internet, or locally, and have a nice ssl encryption. Takes a bit of work to setup but is very worthwhile.

the best bet is to find a contractor to do the whole lot for you, there are loads of companies out there that will do this sort of thing. It's not something you'll pick up and get right first time without a lot of work.

An oem license is limited to the machine it was put on, to image from it you either need a volume license covering your entire site or to change the key and activate each machine individually. A volume license is based on the number of machines on your site and will give you an os upgrade license ( it upgrades the oem license) , office , and various cals for accessing servers ) , it'll likely cost about £25 per machine per year.

how are you conencting? GRPS or wireless? Orange used to have problems connecting to some exchange server's because of the way it handed the https protocol.

ports 5800 and 5900 for vnc connectinos, not sure what port it is for the initial install.

Definately worth giving them seperate accounts, if only so when one leaves you dont have to make big changes. You may also find that some only have skills or job roles that dont merit a full admin account. As for splitting up jobs I think you will need a helpdesk or a helpdesk co-ordinator.

What does the script say, when is it applied?, do you have group policy inplace to deny the first user screen?

I'd set machines pinging each other to see if its a data transfer problem, but it also might be a multitude of single instance problems, for instance if your new anti virus is doing a scan at the same time.
