Upgrading in place is always going to result in a slightly slower user experience overall, wiping and imaging them is def the best way to do this. What have you done for upgrading all the other computers in the school? It would be an ideal time to try to put an end to the bad practice of saving things on local computers. There are numerous reasons not to do this, backups being the main one, but also data protection - the server will be in a secure room (hopefully) whilst an admin pc would be considerably easier to steal, along with all the data on it.

Does the laptop have an option for battery calibration? Sometimes it's in the bios, or a separate piece of software. Will completely discharge the battery so the gauge is more accurate.

We've used VNC before in view only mode and it has worked well.

That's what I've been finding. I can get the same model refurb on ebay for that sort of price, so may just have to write them off.

Does anyone know where to get replacement touch screens for a Dell Optiplex 3030 All in one computer from? I've had a couple knocked over and cracked. Dell quote silly prices, and the computers although a good spec are just coming up to 5 years old, so I don't want to spend a fortune on them.

I think there are lots of GDPR issues - the receptionist would never be able to lock her computer all the time the powerpoint is needed to be running. If they just want powerpoints showpoint is by far the easiest way to do it, all they have to do is edit the powerpoint and save it, it does the rest. Could run it from any old computer if they are happy with a second computer sat on their desk.

We used showpoint on our screens too, was really easy. Set a share on the pc, and a shortcut to it on the admin computer that updates it. Save the new powerpoint in there and it starts playing it automatically. Couldn't be any simpler from an end users perspective. Also all of our class desktops are now Intel NUC's from verypc, really impressed with them.

We went from reading cloud to libresoft and could not be happier. Librarian loves it, I find it easy to manage, quite simply it just works. Migration was included in the price and was very smooth, bit of tidying up of the data to do afterwards but that was because it was bad before. Couple of hours work at most and been perfect since. As mentioned above, be careful to give enough notice to cancel reading cloud.

I'm in exactly the same situation, have a limited amount in the budget for replacement this year, but not intending to do it unless it goes wrong. Obviously would have to be an incredibly rushed job to replace if it does fail, but chances are very low, and it's adequate for need at the moment. I have only called support once about it in 5 years of having it.

We use a small set of VR headsets from Classvr, the same company that make learnpads. I found their learnpads to be terrible, but the VR kit is actually ok, nicely wrapped up in an easy to manage package, ideal for primary school.

Wouldn't you be best running netsupport on it's own server, not on a DC? That's kind of the point of virtualising!

You mention the server is up to date, is there a firmware update available for the actual drives?

It does sound like this one storage location is occasionally dropping it's network connection for whatever reason. Could try something simple like a recurring ping (ping servername -t) and see if you get sporadic packet drops. On most networks you should see almost zero packet loss.

It's a case of it should be ok, but isn't technically within spec. I just wired my house with 5e, can't ever see me needed more than 1gig to each computer, not for a long time anyway!

We use altaro, have done for years and never had any issues.

Is the fiber you have capable of 10gig reliably? How old are the runs, and what spec cable is it?

If it is for gates I'm assuming it is using the net2 entry intercoms etc. I'm 99% sure that these require IPv6. It is about the only part of ours that I didn't setup, but when the company doing it set it up to start with it failed when on an old switch, but was fine when i changed it over to a modern one.
