  1. Basically, if you have a server with 3 drives in the Raid Array, and it has spare drive slots you can add more drives to the server and in most cases increase the size of the raid array using the utility the manufacturer provide, depending on other facotrs you can even do this through a utility in Windows (on most HP servers you can). Check whether drives are hot swappable or not as well, because you might be able to add drives while the server is on and do it all that way which you may be more comfortable with. Have you bought the drives already?
  2. This morning I have received a note in my pigeon hole. Capita tried to contact me and left a message at 10.15am, so it appears that they did try to look into my case. They just ignored the fact I gave them my mobile number after I explicitly told them the switchboard was turned off and it would be the only way to contact me...
  3. Nope no callback. Luckily I found I could print reports if logged in as a domain admin on the server... so I have everything we need for tomorrow. I don't mean to be rude but I find almost all problems that I report that aren't an instant fix result in waiting a while for a call back (I have waited for 2 weeks once and had even forgot I had phoned up! That was something to do with a document store), and usually in that time you have found your own work around. I'll just wait to see if they phone back tomorrow, not that is of any use because I don't want to print out copies of the pupils results tomorrow, and you can't delay results day. On a good note the phone was answered suprisingly quickly, I assume Capita have employed more staff to deal with download day problems, so that was good and probably would have been good for simple issues. I don't want to bad mouth Capita support anyway it is just disapointing when on a crucial day the support isn't there, it should also be noted that as of the end of August we will be moving away from SIMS so then I can moan about our new MIS provider not calling back when it is crucial instead
  4. I rung about an exams issue at 8am this morning and still haven't had a call back. The usual standard of support from Capita.
  5. mccford17, seems you don't have much idea of what you are talking about and have probably never used Bromcom, and to be honest look like fake advertising. Bromcom webfolder writes directly into the SIMS database when you make a change, therefore it is instant (well milliseconds). I have no problem with honest opinions but outright lying is wrong.
  6. Best options, either 3rd part software like Bromcom web folder, Citrix or through a Terminal Services session.
  7. Warranty per machine £30, cash back for each warranty £25, £5 for an extended warranty. So £5 x 80 = £400, each machine was over £450 (ex VAT). Value for money is the most important thing for me.
  8. We have 80+ All-In-One computers (Lenovo Business) here, we bought an extended warrant yon them was extremely cheap at the time. Had them nearly 3 years and not one screen has broke. All faults we did have with them have been fixed, and is surprisingly the HDD every time.
  9. We have a leased line and an ADSL fail-over, but I know only halve the local schools have this setup, because we left the LA for out leased line. Either way, you can teach without the Internet and do most admin tasks without the Internet. Seems that putting one of the legal requirements the school has on a single point of failure (in a lot of cases) is an odd idea, if the school has sufficient Internet provision then maybe it is a good idea. Another thing I wonder about is, what happens if an update breaks a Progresso installation, and Serco install it on a cluster at a time for example, seems like it could cause a mass problem. I don't mean to cause offense but everywhere software company produces a good few duff updates, any company that claims otherwise is lying. I think I should also make it clear that we have a web based MIS but ours is hosted internally because I believed in school access to the MIS was the main requirement and should we have a problem with our leased line/ firewall/ filtering etc we could still operate as a school. But this was my opinion at the time.
  10. Surely the biggest issue with "cloud" solutions is simply, no Internet access for whatever reason, means no MIS. There are a lot of schools out there whose Internet access can be flaky at times, if you can't for example do an electronic register in the morning or you cannot find a pupil because you can't get access to his timetable so you have to go room by room, then I see it as a huge issue and entirely relevant. I know all IT systems can fail at anytime, the problem is the Internet often fails more often then anything else and is usually out of IT staff hands when it does.
  11. I find most Capita installers are a bit meh. I would re-run the original installer over the top, this will check for parts of FMS missing, such as the infrastructure or the BDE module etc. Once you know these bits are installed , then try copying a working FMS folder in the place of the "none-working" current one and test.
  12. Want my advice, reinstall FMS normally to make sure all the bits get installed. Then if you still have a problem (this is my favorite solution for FMS) copy the whole folder from a working FMS installation and replace the one on the broken machine. This fixes more FMS bugs then any other fix, I usually use the admin c$ share to grab a working installation.
  13. Excellent news, hopefully it will be fine after your reboot to.
  14. All those problems will be also depends on who owns the device, if a pupil owns the device then each pupil must buy as app (assuming this is how you do your 1:1 ratio) and there is nothing you can do. They would also all need apple accounts etc. If the school owns every device, then the problems become how long will 800 ipads last, how many per year will be lost/ broken, because the pupils won't look after them as well because they aren't theirs to have. But the cost saving comes because you can limit the number of apps needed. With that said, 800 iPads is a colossal amount of money, and I give them a life expectancy of 3 years, so if 3 years you need another colossal amount of money. If a computer per child was really the way to go, then every room would have enough PCs in so every pupil could use one in every lesson if they needed to but they don't. On a side note, I am also slightly concerned about whether writing on iPads for example is really a good idea (as in medically). Tablets have a place in schools, well most likely in most schools. Does every pupil need an iPad to learn or is there a benefit to every pupil having one? I don't think so, they become a distraction and a very expensive one.
  15. Removing the NIC from device manager and re-adding is also an option, this would reset everything to do with the NIC itself.
  16. Well he has Exchange 2010, he mentioned earlier.
  17. I would reset the stack again. Then check that the ipconfig is all correct. Have you tried flushing DNS as well to make sure you are definitely getting a clean copy again.
  18. and you have definitely checked that they are pointing to the right DNS on the NICs right? I only ask because I have seen people not able to ping localhost but able to ping everything else via hostname.
  19. So the problem is purely resolving the names, it can ping addresses etc if you provide it with an IP? If so I assume you have changed all the DNS servers with no luck, and assuming pinging "localhost" also doesn't work then it seems like the DNS client on the servers has gone haywire, you have tried the in built repair utility to check the windows files to?
  20. Nope there isn't, Apple TVs were never really designed to work like that. It comes down to the now age old problem with Apple products, they are great for home but problems crop up when in a school. Anyone with the password can connect and I don't think there is any obvious way to see who is streaming to the TV, which means you can't tell who is doing what. What you could do is have a teachers ipad on one VLAN and then the other iPads on another VLAN then they couldn't see the Apple TV (if you plug the Apple Tv into the network and don't connect it via the wireless)
  21. Guess they are good at jumping over horses, dancing, spinning on bars and hoops
  22. Didn't he get .5 of a mark not .7 Also he would have get execution points to if he had landed it, so probably work about 1 full point. If someone does somet really rubbish, then they still did it. If some just drives straight of the diving board instead of diving properly (all fancy like), technically they still performed the action of diving. Even if it was rubbish compared to everyone else.
  23. rad what you bought was the now so famous PPI. I couldn't get that when i got a mortgage as my other half's income wouldn't have been covered. As for Life Insurance, I thought it was usually a condition of the mortgage now, because they(mortgage provider) don't want to get given a house after you die, they would rather get the money and leave the house to family etc.
  24. Longer to do short term, imaging does take longer to which is worse mid term but easier in the summer or half terms. Personally I use a full image mate, I think it is easier and cleaner. Edit: I'm waiting for 30gb of Moodledata to move servers...
  25. Your other choice would be, though you obviously don't have time this year now, is to create packages for al your software then deploy it, makes updating easier and makes your image much quicker as it becomes drivers only. Maybe a project for next yeah. Our image only has about 60 bits of software in, but I guess I am luckier with the PC variations. I have about 4 models mainly, then 1 or two odd ones that I just do manually.
